To make right-angle turns while boring wood, especially when you’re installing wiring, you normally drill two holes and hope they meet. Now you can drill in one side of a timber and emerge 90 degrees away on a perpendicular side. The Around the Corner Bit has a hardened-steel shaft with cutting surfaces surrounding it. As you drill, you can use the shaft as a lever to cut a curved hole. Vermont American Tool Co., Box 340, Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.

THE ULTIMATE ENERGY-EFFICIENT HOUSE
[no value]
[no value]
JIM SCHEFTER
What results when the world’s premier airplane designer sits down to plan a house for himself? A residence with few right angles, a cast-epoxy skylight and furniture, and a water wheel and pools for humidifying and thermal mass. The house is so efficient that though it’s in the Mojave Desert, it needs almost no heating or cooling; its indoor temperature varies daily just 1.5 degrees F. MOJAVE, CALIF. It’s that parched blistering conjures prospector hot up the and image dry, crawling a of day a across the sand.

ARTHUR FISHER
Call them what you will: "throwaways," "disposables," or as Kodak prefers, "single-use" cameras. By any name, they are selling sweetly in the marketplace. First introduced by Fuji in 1986, and quickly followed by Kodak's Fling models, these instruments represent a return to the simplicity of the early days of photography for the masses-a philosophy exemplified by the Kodak advertising slogan "You push the button, we do the rest."

Good idea? It depended on whom he asked. As Dunlap tells the story, he first consulted Japan's major VCR manufacturers and was promptly told to forget it.

Out in the Arizona desert, just west of Winslow, lies a gaping pit almost a mile wide and more than 600 feet deep, its red sandy walls dotted with rocks and sagebrush. It’s the remnant of a meteorite that crashed into Earth thousands of years ago.

“Pick one up and thump it with your knuckles,” a celebrated chef once wrote of testing a watermelon for ripeness. “If it sounds hollow and resounding, it is probably full of juice.” If a Georgia chemist’s experiments bear fruit, however, melon lovers will thump no more.

The NAP-Z20 engine in my 1984 Nissan pickup has a problem with the distributor cap and rotor contacts getting burned. I’ve replaced the cap and rotor several times now, but each time, after about 2,000 miles, the engine develops a low-speed miss, and I find the cap and rotor contacts burned.
