For many years the polarizer has been the first filter recommendation made to tyro photographers. Whether shooting black and white, print film, or slides, the polarizer is effective (particularly with sunlight) for increasing contrast and color saturation, and for cutting reflections (the maximum effect is achieved when the camera is held at an angle of about 35 degrees to the reflecting surface).

It’s a hot sunny afternoon on this tropical island in the Pacific, and it looks like I’m in trouble. I’ve been sitting peacefully on the ground in a field near Mt. Hagen, reloading my cameras, when a marching phalanx of native warriors, warming up for a culture show (staged for tourists), wheels around and heads straight at me.

We suppose it’s well-nigh time to retire the phrase “aerospace giant” that seems always to appear in front of the name Samsung. Because while the, uh, aerospace giant is manufacturing tons of electronics and overhauling 747’s as usual, it’s becoming equally well known as a maker of extensive lines of 35mm and APS point-and-shoots.

Allan Weitz
ONLY A FEW SHORT YEARS AGO, IF YOU WANTED to print photographs, you had to retreat from friends, family, and other signs of civilization, and lock yourself in a darkroom. Today, you can produce repro-quality photographs while sitting in your yard with a laptop on your knee and an inkjet printer parked at arm’s length from the barbecue.

How to correct and create underwater images in Photoshop
[no value]

RICK SAMMON
Photographers who love a challenge or who thrive on adrenaline might agree that shooting underwater poses some of the greatest challenges of all. In this alien environment— where cameras, flashes, housings, and sync cords can flood (ruining a shoot); divers can get seasick, stung by coral, attacked by sharks, or paralyzed by the bends (ruining the whole day) technical challenges are legion.

Vary economical! Want to stretch your fílm budget? Now you can get up to 144 pictures from a roll with Vary-Format Filmgate masks for 35mm cameras. The masks are sold in kits ($18 plus s/h) that include half-frame (vertical and horizontal), third-frame, and quarter-frame masks. To use, you place the mask in the filmgate, then load the film using special registration guides. To help with composition, cards sized for the camera’s memo slot remind you what area of the viewfinder is “live.” Shoot the roll, and rewind normally. Remove the leader from the cartridge using the Vary-Format extractor (above, right); after flipping the mask, reload the film, again using the registration guide. Reshoot the roll. When finished, have the film processed normally. Instead of one 4x6, for example, you get two 2x3’s, four lxl.5s, etc., depending on the mask used. It sounds like fun, if not the last word in convenience. (Vary-Format, P.O. Box 1121, Parklands, 2121, South Africa; 27-11-788-0030; www.vary-format.com)

Ilford
Way cool A few years back, the trend in resincoated black-and-white enlarging papers was to warm-tone papers. Within months of each other, Kodak, Ilford, and Agfa introduced warm-tone variants of their RC papers. No company offered a product on the cool side of neutral. Until now. As a sign that the pendulum may be swinging back in the other direction, Ilford recently released MultiGrade RC CoolTone, just a touch more blue than the neutral Multigrade IV RC Deluxe. Available in glossy or pearl finish, and in all standard paper sizes, CoolTone is claimed to have the same contrast and light sensitivity as the other Multigrade offerings, making it easy to move from one tonality to another. (Ilford Imaging, West 70 Century Rd., Paramus, NJ 07652; 201-265-6000; www.ilford.com)

Wither cameras go, so go accessories Now that cameras—film, video, and digital—are shrinking ever smaller accessory makers are shrinking their wares as well. Take Sunpak’s line of Picture Plus filters. In response to the growing number of smaller lenses on digital cameras and camcorders, Sunpak has introduced 12 mini filters in sizes from 27mm to 30.5mm, with step-up rings from 37 to 82mm. The newcomers include multiple sizes of UV, Skylight, and Circular Polarizer. Sunpak claims the same high optical quality for the smaller filters as it does for the rest of the line. The best thing about the mini filters? Their mini prices: from $9.95 to $59.95. (ToCAD America, 300 Webro Rd., Parsippany, NJ 07054-2882; 973-428-9800.)

Small and tall The latest generation of minicamcorders, both digital and Hi-8, are smaller and taller than their predecessors. As a result, bags made for traditionally shaped camcorders are too wide and too short. Enter the Case Logic DVC-50 bag. With accessory pockets for cords, batteries, cassettes, and manuals, the case ($39.95) is sized to accept today’s minicamcorders. The DVC-50 has the look and feel of leather; its bottom is reinforced with PVC “plating,” and the top opening is double zippered with a double sealing main flap for extra moistureand theft-resistance. (Case Logic, 6303 Dry Creek Parkway, Longmont, CO 80503; 310-374-6893; www.caselogic.com)

Let there be (softer, brighter, easier) light! Professional photographers use umbrella lighting because it’s soft and flattering, easily aimed, and the umbrellas fold up for convenient transport and storage. One of the most popular is Westcott’s White Satin model, which has a black removable cover. Attach the cover for maximum control and light output with little scatter. Remove the cover to shoot through the umbrella for maximum softness. The problem with Westcott’s White Satin model? Until now, it was available in only one size, a 45-inch diameter. Now, Westcott introduces two new sizes for added flexibility: a 32-incher for location photography, and an oversized 60-incher for full-length portraits and other larger subjects. Going for $21.90 and $59.90 respectively, the umbrellas are sold in plastic pouches that are claimed to make good storage or transport containers. (The F. J. Westcott Co., 1447 Summit St., Toledo, OH 43603, 419-243-7311; www.fjwestcott.com)

Think small “Midget” must have been the development nickname for Sony’s new DCR-PC5 Handycam ($1,499). It’s the smallest DV camcorder we’ve ever seen, weighing less than a pound and small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. With its unique 2.5-inch Touchscreen LCD monitor, you can access most menus by tapping your finger on the screen.

I found Herbert Keppler’s recent “SLR” column to be extremely interesting, particularly the section about depth of field. In 1961,1 bought a German-manufactured Kodak Retina Reflex III camera with three lenses (50mm f/2.8 Schneider-Kreuznach Retina Xenar, 35mm f/2.8 S-K Retina Curtagon, and 135mm f/4 Rodenstock Retina Rotelar).

there's a message in the medium
So you think 35mm cameras give you the most variety in format and design? Think again!
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
There’s no doubt that medium-format cameras are vastly outnumbered in brands and models by 35mm. But when it comes to variety of selection in both format and design, medium-format cameras blow 35mm away. Putting aside the main and undeniable reasons for medium format—bigger film area providing more information, finer grain (film emulsion for film emulsion), allowing greater enlargement, additional detail, and far easier-to-see negatives or transparencies—medium format isn’t stuck in a format rut.

What attracts professionals and serious amateurs to medium-format cameras? For one thing, larger negatives and slides often mean sharper images that can be reproduced larger with satisfying detail and great resolution. Likewise, MF images can be drastically cropped and still reproduce acceptably.

If you think the digital darkroom can replace the chemical darkroom, looking at a print by John Sexton will change your mind. "I tell people I’ve been doing digital photography for decades, because I have to count the Zones on my fingers,” jokes Sexton, who still uses the 10step Zone System of exposure devised by his great mentor, Ansel Adams.

Thirty-five-millimeter shooters typically encounter one barrier that stalls (or blocks entirely) the leap to the larger, sharper, more detailed and often more satisfying pictures that rollfilm cameras can deliver: price. For a modular medium-format SLR system, the prospective buyer must spring for a body, finder, film back (with insert), and at least one lens. (Some MF cameras, especially entry-level models, don’t have autoexposure, so add a meter or meter prism to that list.)

The five Mamiya-Sekor manual-focus lenses POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY tested in conjunction with our Mamiya 645E SLR test report are the 80mm f/2.8, 55mm f/2.8, 120mm f/4 Macro, 200mm f/2.8 APO, and 300mm f/2.8 APO. While they come in different colors and materials (polycarb/die-cast aluminum), the lenses are of sturdy construction and average size and weight for the format, except for the 300mm f/2.8 APO, a unique piece, as we’ll see.

When photographing people at night, what technique should I use in order to show some background detail? My guess would be to use a slower shutter speed and second-curtain sync with the camera’s dedicated flash. What do you advise? Alex Smolyansky, via the Internet We think you’re on the right track.
