We think Lou Desiderio is having altogether too much of a good time in his charity work. He is, after all, going to a ball game at all 30 major-league baseball stadiums with his six-year-old son Evan (and photographing the fun), partly to raise money for cystic fibrosis research.

Herbert Keppler
Many years ago I asked my friend, the great photo-journalist Alfred Eisenstaedt, how he was able to shoot both color and black-and-white literally at the same time, and how he differentiated between them. “Very simple,” said Eisie, “I shoot first with one camera loaded with one film, and then I shoot the other film with the second camera.”

Move over, Pico and Femto! Rollei’s Nano is in town and it looks strangely familiar...

Dan Richards
It really is cute as a button, isn’t it? You might say that Rollei’s top-of-the-line APS point-and-shoot, the Nano 80, breaks no new ground stylistically. It does, however, break considerable old ground: with its squarish contours, metal cladding, and understated detailing, it might almost be one of those little 35mm pocketables from days gone by.

In our last Point & Shoot, column, we presented what must rank as the world's funkiest three-way camera shootout (a Hong Kong-made crappy Snappy and a 60-year-old rollfilm snapshot camera against a modern single-use camera). The test confirmed something we've been saying all along: modern single-use cameras are too darn good.

I don’t want to say that Alaska is too huge of a place, but a sign I saw on a tavern wall in Anchorage summed it up nicely: “To Our Friends from Texas: If we divided Alaska in two, Texas would be the third largest state.” Yup, that’s pretty big, all right.

Even before MacGyver, every photo magazine article about camera bag contents mentioned the inclusion of a Swiss Army knife. Readers were led to believe that by adding a Swiss Army knife to their bags they could literally field strip a 35mm reflex aboard a fishing trawler (in 40-foot seas!) or carve a tripod head from a stick they found along the side of a forest path.

Kodak now has batteries for the digital market. Among the new items are AA-and AAA-size nickelmetal hydride cells with matching chargers as well as alkaline AAs. At the same time, Kodak has raised the capacity of rechargeable consumer AA cells to 1650 milliampere-hours (mAh), and AAA cells to 700 mAh.

Having cut its high-tech teeth on the EOS-3, and debugging it thoroughly, Canon has now taken the EOS-3’s 45point, CMOS autofocus technology and blended it smoothly into a new top-of-the-line, highly durable, procamera replacement for the EOS-1N, the EOS-1V.

Hands on: Exceptionally rugged and solid with good-looking, dull black crackle finish on barrel parts; broad, heavily patterned, easily gripped, rubberized focusing and zoom rings; large and highly legible white focallength-indicators with good focusing scale (yellow for meters, white for feet) underneath plastic window; infrared film setting indicating marks at 28-, 50-, and 80mm; instant lens switching from autofocus to manual or vice-versa by pulling forward or pushing back on focusing ring; very smooth, well-damped zooming and manual focusing; large, raised white dot indicator facilitates easier lens attachment.

Hands on: In our continuing adventures in the wonderful world of retro photo equipment, we’ve tested a new, multicoated, extrawide-angle lens of modern optical design—in Leica screw-thread mount. This formerly obsolete mount has had new life breathed into it with the introduction of the Cosina-made Voigtländer Bessa-R rangefinder, which we used as a test platform for this Japanese-made Kobalux lens.

Max Wraps
$15
For those who want to personalize their single-use cameras, Kodak offers a solution with jazzy-looking Max Wraps, reusable neoprene sleeves that slip around the little cameras, providing a better grip and a modicum of impact protection. Offered in a number of different colors and styles, Max Wraps, named after Kodak’s single-use cameras, fit other makers’ cameras, too. Each is slightly different, and all have plastic clips for attaching the camera to a belt loop or backpack. The Glam model, for example, aimed at young women, has a makeup mirror, change purse, and lipstick holder. Price: Under $15 at CVS, Kmart, and HEB stores. Polaroid’s 545 Pro Film Holder
$299
Like the model that preceded it, Polaroid’s 545 Pro Film Holder slips into the back of a 4×5 view camera to produce instant proof prints that pros use to check lighting and exposure. This latest version weighs 1.5 pounds, measures 5.5×9 inches, and it’s smart. It adds a battery-powered timer and computer chip that track processing times for up to three developing prints simultaneously using one of six processing times between 15 and 90 seconds, depending on the film type. The backs ($299) include a built-in thermometer that monitors ambient temperature, warning you when it’s too hot or cold for normal Polaroid processing. A built-in LCD panel then displays the exposure compensation required to produce a Polaroid that will match film exposure. That is smart! Pro Optic’s loupes
$109.95
Pro Optic’s loupes for examining 6×6and 6×7-cm slides and contact sheets provide 3.5X and 3X magnification respectively. They have knurled and rubberized diopter-adjustment rings, aluminum-alloy construction with attractive matte black surfaces, and protective lenscaps. Each has a high, 20mm eyepoint for ease of viewing; glass coatings to control reflections and flare; and interchangeable opaque and translucent viewing hoods for slides and prints respectively. Removing the hoods enables easy examination of three-dimensional objects, such as flowers or mounted insects (we’ve tried it). The 6×6 ($109.95) and 6×7 ($119.95) loupes come with neckstraps, but with their maximum diameter of approximately 4 inches and weight of just under a pound, we think you’ll probably opt for the supplied, leather-like pouches for transport. The LumiQuest UltraBounce
$14.95
The LumiQuest UltraBounce, an accessory for hot-shoemount flash units, spreads light output across a 180-degree arc, producing illumination that mimics broad, directionless outdoor light for your indoor flashlit pictures. Unlike similar products, though, the UltraBounce ($14.95) requires little bag space because it folds flat. Also, because it attaches via hook-and-loop tabs, it’s claimed to fit most common-sized shoe-mount flash heads. Another novelty: an adjustable flap shields the flash’s AE sensor, preventing underexposure. (LumiQuest, 28540 Durango Dr., New Braunfels, TX 78132; 830-438-4646; www.lumiquest.com)

f/64 camera bag
$13
Modular side pockets for camera bags aren’t new, but Bushwhacker, a company known for bike and hike bags, has given the concept a new tweak: the detachable side pockets in the f/64 camera bag line couple with an accessory waist strap, converting to a single or multi-pocket fanny pack. The removables are particularly useful if, for example, you’re worried about airport X-rays fogging your film. When you arrive at the X-ray station, pull off the film-loaded side pockets for hand inspection. Also, the pockets are claimed to be well integrated with the design of the bag, both physically and visually. The pockets don’t detach until you want them to. The f/64 bags are said to use heavyduty materials, including extra-strong nylon threading (#69), polycarbonate buckles, and water-resistant seams and zippers. Available in four colors, the bags range in size from single camera to full system, and in pricing from $13 to $300. (f/64, P.O. Box 297, Morgan, UT 84050; 801-829-6801)

I frequently do group shots of rugby teams, using a 28-80mm lens on my 35mm camera, with the lens set between 50and 80mm. There are usually up to 30 people in the picture, standing in two or three rows, and the result is that everyone looks very small.

What does this intriguing assemblage of body parts suggest to you? A fruit bowl perhaps? Or is it a study in pure abstract form? According to the photographer, New York—based pro Howard Schatz, his aim in making this and similarly compelling photos of enmeshed human elements is to create “biologic sculpture.”
