Looking for new ways to display photos instead of the same boring album after album? Carol Scheffler, artsand-crafts teacher and regular guest on The Today Show, has some neat and novel ideas. For school portraits, try cutting triangles and rectangles from pretty colored paper, cut the school photos into circles, paste, and voilà—instant bird-houses.

Eaton S. Lothrop
When was the first disposable (a.k.a. single-use) camera created? Some readers may recall the Kodak Fling, the 110-cartridge disposable introduced in 1987. Others may note that this was the same year Fuji introduced its 35mm Quick-Snap—and that Fuji had brought out a 110 disposable a year earlier.

Why is the new Alaska Edition of Monopoly, the classic board game, likely to ring photographers’ chimes? Because it’s based entirely on Alaskan locations, attractions and animals, and each one is illustrated by an eye-catching color photograph.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art hasn’t, until now, made a strong commitment to that relatively new art form, photography. Sure, they got hold of a couple of important collections here and there, but they didn’t have an aggressive acquisitiveness that would stand up to other institutions.

When Kodak brought out the whole new range of Gold 100, 200, 400, and 800 Gold print films, you didn’t think Fuji would be very far behind with a rival family of films, did you? Here come Fuji Superia 100, 200, 400 and 800, and Reala, some similar to present Fuji color-print films, others tweaked a bit, and a few possibly brand-new emulsions.

1st ($300) Spot me a drink? The play of light and shadow, the vivid colors, wealth of detail, and a stone-still dalmatian are what attracted Archie Reyes of Elmhurst, New York, to this open-air joint on Brooklyn's famous Coney Island boardwalk. Reyes, who frequently photographs in Coney Island, at first assumed the dog wasn't real: the scene was too perfect.

If two lenses have different SQF (subjective quality factor) ratings, how much actual picture variation would that cause? Only one way to find out. Do a test. We selected the 28—105mm f12.8—4 AF Sigma and the 28—105mm f/2.8 Tamron. The Sigma weighs 14 ounces, is 4⅜ inches long, and costs about $210 street price.

Right around the time that military radar starts reporting a peculiar sled-shaped UFO flying out from the North Pole, another ELPH was discovered lurking under a worktable in the work-shop of one S. Claus. Cleverly disguised as the original ELPH, this latest pixie from Canon, the 370Z, has a full 3:1 zoom squeezed into a stainless-steel body that is, remarkably, only one ounce heavier and no more than ⅜ inch bigger in any dimension than the original (and very much current) ELPH.

Just getting started in camera collecting? You won't find vintage classics at bargain prices, but you can carve out a nouveau niche.
Too true to be good?
[no value]

Jason Schneider
While the camera collecting bug, like the flu virus, takes many forms and defies easy analysis, the pleasant affliction it causes usually takes a predictable course. Novice collectors generally latch onto any camera that strikes their fancy, and in their newly found enthusiasm for amassing fascinating machinery, they tend to exhibit a singular lack of discernment.

The Pentax ZX-M can be fitted with an amazing number of different models and brands of K-mount lenses, including Pentax AF lenses that can then be used in manual-focus mode. However, available metering modes, information seen in the viewfinder, as well as exposure metering patterns do vary with different lens models.

One of the exciting developments in this age of digital photography has been the “virtual walk through.” With a press of a mouse button, you press mouse you can see a 360-degree view of any location, just as if you were there. Only problem? For that 360-degree spin to look natural, the constituent pictures must be made in a very specific way: byturning the camera on the lens’s nodal point when the photos are taken.

What kind of film will allow me to copy slides onto negative film for making prints? I tried Kodak Gold 100 print film, but the negatives turned out too contrasty and were a disaster. L. Gamlan, Boise, ID You found out the hard way that contrast will increase when you make copies of an image, whether it's from a slide to a negative or a slide to another slide.
