1st ($300) Catch that comet! The Hale-Bopp comet streaked through our night skies this past spring and we received a lot of entries in its wake, but none were better, or the result of more determination, than this spectacular shot. Glenn F. Knarr of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a freelance photographer for the local “News-Item,” hit the road one night at 2:00 A.M. in search of the best vantage point to photograph the cosmic visitor.

If you see someone who looks like Shinichiro Tora taking pictures of numbers, letters, clocks, license plates, bus advertisements, and various other artifacts in Manhattan, it probably is Shinichiro Tora. POP’S longtime art director recently had a big show of his wonderfully zany pictures, “Manhattan Color Graffity,” in both Tokyo and Osaka.

No, no, no. This isn’t gonna be the same old “what focal length do you need?” or “how to handhold a zoom securely” garbage. This is more the “I never thought about that until I was stuck with the zoom,” and “no wonder my zoom shots aren’t as sharp as I thought they would be” stuff—much of this information learned the hard way by yours truly screwing up.

IMAGING TODAY & TOMORROW
The bottom line
[no value]
[no value]
Michael J. McNamara
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can remember image quality has always been a driving factor behind the success of any new cam era, whether it be a Saturday night single-use special, a pricey point-and-shoot, or a superb SLR. But when it comes to digital cameras, es pecially those in the under$1,000 point-and-shoot class, image quality, unfor tunately, takes a back seat to other concerns.

It’s no longer big news—or, for that matter, news at all—that pros have embraced zoom lenses as standard camera-bag and studio optics. And pros often use zooms in much the same way amateurs use them: For quick changes of focal length without lens fumbling, for fast framing without wasted steps, for grabbing closeups of small details (down to near-macro) within a wider picture.

What’s new in zooms? Plenty! Exciting things are happening at both the wide and tele ends of the zoom range. And in the middle, too! Who could have predicted a 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6? A zoom starting around 100mm and going out to 500mm? An oddball 420-700mm manual focus, manually set aperture, varifocal lens?

Beautiful scenic views often are too wide to fit onto a single 35mm-format print. If you try a wider-angle lens, the subjects generally shrink in size and lose their dramatic impact. What to do? Take two or more shots at different angles and plan to join the prints later.

The Leica R8, the first all-newfrom-the-chassis-up Leica SLR in decades, is a camera that proves many things to many people. Its very existence refutes the allegations, widely circulated among photo industry insiders, that the new, leaner, meaner Leica camera company was no longer capable of serious technical innovation, and that their SLRs were inextricably tied to the admirable but dated Minolta XE-7 chassis.

Each month brings us a stack of mail praising our mail-order advertisers. But we have to admit that we also get a few letters reporting “rotten apples”—salesmen who twist the truth to try to land your order. When you do come across one of these, don’t argue, don’t fret—just hang up. Then let us know about them. We’ve been able to clean up many of these problem actors.

I have an excellent 110 camera that I would like to use. The problem is that its metering system is based on ISO 80 film, but only ISO 200 film is currently available. Can I use that combination of camera and film? What can I do to make them compatible? Victor Voss, Lakeville, MN Go ahead and use the ISO 200 film.
