Attack of the killer crane! This is what sometimes happens when you try to get too close to one of our feisty feathered friends. Great documentation. Sorry, no tech data. When we asked our readers to send in “pictures of pets and of human/animal interaction” to compete in the 1996 Animal Lover’s Photo Contest (co-sponsored by the American Humane Association and POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY), we didn’t expect to get anything quite like this! The amazing and amusing sequence of bird vs. photographer was captured by Zhang Jia Wu of Baicheng City, China, who calls it “An accident when shooting a crane.

Talk about weird gifts, how about a scrubby camera that had been submerged in water and was beyond hope. Maybe beyond hope of repair, but not beyond hope as a work of art. A friend of Contributing Editor Elinor Stecker-Orel spotted it in a repair shop.

When is a poem not a poem? When it’s a photograph! Just ask Richard Misrach, the photographer who organized his series of photographs on American deserts into what he calls “cantos.” By using this term, Misrach evokes the poetic journeys of Dante, Byron, and Ezra Pound, and invites us on our own poetic/photographic voyage.

The phaseout of environment-polluting mercury batteries is driving many owners of older cameras, exposure meters, and other photo equipment using such cells up the battery wall. Replacement cells developed by battery makers often provide either short life or incorrect exposures.

If you were to chronicle the evolution of the 35mm SLR during the past 45 years, you could certainly use the Nikon F cameras as stepping stones. The 1959 F was the first SLR conceived as part of a complete system. Its interchangeable finder later allowed a TTL meter prism to be fitted.

Don’t even ask us how we got one, but once we were whisked away by the ghostly gray limo with the blacked-out rear windows, deposited at the old warehouse at the end of a dark alley, and gave the secret code words, “The elf is clad in stainless," the small unmarked box was ours at last.

50 years ago We gave our regards to Broadway on the October '46 cover with Reuben Saidman’s fine color shot of Manhattan’s rain-soaked Great White Way. While many of the logos have vanished, the glitzy aura of the place remains the same. Saidman took the picture with a tripod-mounted 4x5 Speed Graphic and f/4.7 Ektar lens.

As a user of Agfa film, I was very interested in the Agfa Sweepstakes in your June issue. I was therefore disappointed to find that I could not enter because I reside north of the border. I was also disgusted to note that residents of Puerto Rico were also excluded although residents of other U.S. colonies were not.

Any doubts I had that the digital video format will prove a revolutionary newstandard were blown into the weeds when I viewed the output from Sony’s DCR-VX700 Digital Handycam—and it’s only a single-chip model. After connecting the DCR-VX700 to my TV set and playing back the tape, I was astounded by the images on the screen.

We are so used to color—often gaudy color— in underwater photography that Karen Glaser’s moodv black-and-white photographs of manatees can strike the viewer as quaint, a little old fashioned, perhaps even somber. Black and white works well here on several levels, though.

Oldtimers will instantly recognize the purpose, function, and probably the maker of this contraption: it’s a flash bracket from Stroboframe, natch. What you probably didn’t know, however, is what makes it unusual—if not unique. First, it’s got a foam-padded, center-mounted handle, lending good balance and full access to camera controls, including a camera’s sidesaddle action grip. Second, its flash arm telescopes up to a maximum of 18 inches, which lets you quickly custom-set flash height. Third, the flash can pivot in 12 click stops, letting you aim it with almost as much flexibility as handholding. And fourth, it comes in two styles, the Pro-SQ bracket ($140) for square-format cameras (or cameras with rotating backs), or the Pro-Rl. ($160) which flips 35mm or medium-format cameras for vertical or horizontal shooting. (The Saunders Group, 21 Jet View Dr., Rochester, NY 14624; 800-FYI-FOTO.)

Wanna plant a big smacker across the lips of your favorite “Friends” character? Now you can...sort of. The TV Picture Print from Video Technologies is a soon-tobe-available accessory that can be added to a television set to produce a Polaroid print (multiples, too) of whatever’s on screen. You press a button (either on the set or its remote control), and a small “screen grab” pops up on the lower right corner of your monitor like one of those picture-in-picture TV images—only it’s a still. If you like what you see, press another button and, pop!, out comes a Polaroid Spectra print. Price? Not yet determined. (Video Technologies Inc., 169 Bent St., Cambridge, MA 02141; 617-354-2446.)

The best way to get a sharper image on your videos is with a digital camcorder, and Sharp has two worth a look see: the VL-D5000U ($4,600), with three CCDs for extremely highquality color, and the VL-DC1U ($3,595), with one CCD. Both feature an LCD Viewcam screen (no more viewfinder to squint through, YEAH!) with enhanced nonreflective coatings for easy viewing in bright light and from extreme angles. The viewing screen on the three-chip camcorder is a whopping five inches, and the other is four. The most innovative feature on the VLDCIU is a thumb-operated, four-position rocker switch that lets you set functions and effects using on-screen prompts. You can operate many controls without removing your eye from the viewing screen or your two-handed grip from the camcorder. Nice! (Sharp Electronics Corporation, Sharp Plaza, Mahway, NJ 07430-2135.)

In-camera editing takes on a new meaning with Canon’s ES900 8mm camcorder. Rearranging, eliminating, shortening scenes, even revising and fine-tuning your decisions, are all available via easy-to-use buttons right on the camcorder. That’s one exciting new feature, but there are more. Instead of a lot of confusing burtons, you can choose your two favorite special functions from the 16 offered (such as exposure lock and titling) and put them on custom keys. And how about an optical 20X zoom lens? That’s a first for an 8mm camcorder. Of course, Canon included optical image stabilization to make sure your pictures are steady when you’re zoomed out to 80mm. The camcorder also has an improved version of the company’s remarkable FlexiZone control, which lets you position the autofocus/autoexposure sensor wherever you like. Color viewfinder, stereo sound, macro autofocus? You bet. This is quite a camcorder for $999. (Canon U.S.A., Inc., One Canon Plaza, Lake Success, NY 11042.)

In Southern climates, one of a photographer’s worst enemies is something invisible, pervasive, and pernicious: humidity. High humidity promotes mold and mildew that can chew an opticsruining path across the multicoating on most lenses in a matter of weeks. Mold can also cause apertures and shutters to stick and give you a serious case of stinky camera bag. One weapon you have against humidity is a chemical desiccant which literally soaks humidity out of the air, and among the most convenient, renewable desiccants we’ve seen is the DriCan Desiccating Canister ($4.95 to $7.95, depending on model). A flat, compact container of plastic (or metal) that looks something like an oversized handwarmer, the DriCan holds a silica-based gel and slips conveniently into most camera bags where it will protect against all of the above plus rust. You can easily regenerate it, too. Just pop it into a microwave or conventional oven, depending on the type of casing. (Multisorb Technologies, 325 Harlem Rd., Buffalo, NY 14224; 800-4459890.)

Reader Daniel Stover [“Letters,” June ’96, page 62], who was considering purchasing either a Mamiya 645 or the Pentax 645, wanted to know which is considered to have the sharpest lenses. Part of your answer was “...Both the Mamiya M645 Super and the Pentax 645 are fine cameras, but the latter doesn’t have interchangeable film magazines or a choice of meter modes....” WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! The Pentax 645 has three magazines: 120, 220, and 70mm.
