Now in its fourth year: the Tampa Bay Calendar, photographed and produced by POP PHOTO reader Dr. David Lubin, distributed primarily in West Central Florida. Dr. Lubin, as you recall (November ’92, page 6) is such an inveterate shutterbug that his car’s license plate reads F8-250TH, which is just about right for slow slide film on a sunny Florida day.

Love! Valor! Compassion! This month’s winners explore the many facets of the human (or penguin) condition. (S300) To have and have not: Your eyes are not deceiving Ol you, this is one image! Stefania Zamparelli of New York City was wandering the streets of lower Manhattan in the wee hours of a soggy, snowy morning when this cozy living room scene, illuminated on the side of a bus stop, caught her eye.

Nothing about photography is boring to me except storing prints, negatives, and slides. But when I misplace a prize shot due to my own slovenliness, I go into panic mode, looking in every nook and cranny until I find the errant photo. And on occasion 1 have lost prized shots forever.

What are the most photogenic areas in a city? The ethnic neighborhoods!
Allan Rokach with Mne Miliman

I am always fascinated by a city’s patchwork of ethnic neighborhoods. These are the rightly knit enclaves of immigrants whose roots are still firmly in the old country. Each wave of newcomers brings its own exotic tastes and smells, hypnotic and unfamiliar music, and a cornucopia of eyepopping sights.

Dan Richards Is this getting crazy or what? Every time we come up with a new item on our point-andshoot wish list, somebody actually makes it. "Hey, how about a zoom model with a 28-70mm lens in a shirt-pocketable size?” we asked with a smirk, knowing that we were proposing the impossible. Then we sneezed, and three (three!) camera makers came out with ’em nearly simultaneously—Canon, Konica, Minolta.

Our July '45 ish may have been short on color pix (there were three!), but it was certainly chock full of fine black whites, including: wartime shots by English amateurs described as “happy, human, and casual, despite bombings and shortages;” a somber selection from occupied France showing “children who do not smile;” and pictorial how-to pieces on shooting close-ups of insects and documenting your home town.

What’s the biggest frustration for a journalist covering li.S. photo trade shows right after the humongous Photokina show in Cologne? Most manufacturers have unleashed their juiciest items in Germany (see “Sint’s View,” January ’95, page 3 8; February ’95, page 17), and exhausted their R8cD departments for months.

Once you enter the world of computer imaging, you're never satisfied with what you have. Like mythological Sirens beckoning ancient mariners with hypnotic songs, there's always another enticing piece of hardware or software out there. Next thing you know, you're hocking your camera collection for a $1000 scanner and extra RAM memory.

No matter how good a portrait is, the person in it is always its hig~est critic. "1 don't like the shine on my nosc, can you remove it?" Or "1 look too fat, can you make me thinner?" Questions like these keep skilled portrait retouchcrs in demand and have helped spawn the rapidly growing computer-retouching industry.

It's no exaggeration to say that the overwhelming ma joritv of top-notch professional pictures taken with 35mm cameras today are shot through zoom lenses. Among serious amateurs, the percentage is even higher. Many who ye bought their first SLRs within the last decade don't even own a single-tocal-length lens.

Does the above question sound familiar to you? It should. These are preciselv the words that began our June 1991 picture article: "Who Wins? AF S1.R vs. Point & Shoot!" We had assigned a point-and-shoot camera to one photographer and an SLR to an other, letting them go head-to-head on the same subjects.

The Cameravan is the result of a dream I had about two years ago. At that time I was still driving my first Art Car, called `Oh My God!' I wanted to document people's incredulous responses to this unlikelylooking vehicle, but when I tried to photograph them, they reacted to the camera, not the car. In my dream, I covered the car with cameras so nobody could tell which of the cam eras actually worked.

I thought that purring my film in a portable plastic cooler would alleviate any adverse effects when I have to leave film in a hot car for long periods of time. Should I he concerned about condensation when I take film from room temperature in my house and put it in the cooler and when I take it out of the cooler on a hot day? Also, how sensitive are batteries to heat? Shannon Chester, Everett, WA Using a cooler to protect your film is an excellent idea in hot weather.
