Open up your wallet, take out a five spot, and compare the Mathew Brady portrait to the image below; could the face in this daguerreotype be... Lincoln’s? Many leading historians and photographic experts think so. The photograph has undergone a rigorous authentication process that has convinced the experts that the visage is indeed the earliest-known photograph of Abraham Lincoln.

1st ($300) Slow shutter dance: Exuberant, colorful... nursery school and kinder-garden classes make wonderful photographic subjects. Singing children ringing ’round their teacher at the Qianzhon kindergarden in Wuzi, China, caught the attention of Zhang Shan Ming of Wuxi.

The bushes parted and a leopard emerged. A collective gasp left the lips of the waiting safari travelers. As the leopard approached a nearby water hole, we readied our camera and 300mm 1ens... as did 14 people jammed into the 12-seat combi van, which dutifully swayed with the shifting weight of the onboard mob scene.

You’re hiking in the mountains and you see a bird with colors you don’t recognize. You take out your trusty camera and snap away. But you want to know more about this bird, so you connect your camera to your PDA (personal digital assistant), press a few buttons, and wait for your cellular phone to ring back with the information you need.

Elinor Stecker-Orel
Do your friends and family nod off or make for the refrigerator when you push “play” for your latest camcorder epic? Yes? Go to question two: Do you edit your tapes? No? Poor answer, because unless you edit the stuff, you may never awaken the faithful or get them back from the excursion to the kitchen.

Through the magic of photography we capture a moment in time...and then display it for all to see and enjoy. But time doesn’t like to be frozen, and over time many of our photo treasures seem to fade away or take on strange, annoying color casts.

Dan Richards
We don’t suppose Nikon ever thought of calling it the Ti-Touch (at least not for long), but such a name would, in a way, point to the dual personality of the Nikon 35Ti: It’s unmistakably an autofocus P/S as well as a precision-crafted compact for the serious (and well-heeled) enthusiast.

Segmented metering: Life-saver or road block to creativity?
When correct evaluative exposure isn't right exposure.

Herbert Keppler
Call it what you will—segmented, Matrix, multipattern, or evaluative— the metering system touted by nearly every autofocus SLR maker may often be doing more to block your exposure creativity than to help it. How did this potentia11y insidious helper come into being?

Teri Myers
Who says you can’t get colorful, dramatic, and fascinating shots of buildings with a 35mm camera and ordinary lenses? Nonsense! Maybe you do need a view camera or, at least, a perspective-control lens when documenting buildings for an architectural magazine with the usual dull, head-on shots.

Martin Hershenson
We are besieged by color print photofinishers—good, bad, indifferent, and variable. Currently, there are about 22,000 regular and mini photofinishing labs in the U.S., and the number is growing. Actually, the color lab you select may be the critical link in the chain that determines how well your pictures will turn out.

ROMANCE OF THE ROADS

There is no experience more quintessentially American than hitting the road. Highways, freeways, turnpikes, and hack roads—endless, country, lonesome, or otherwise—figure prominently in our music, literature, and legends. And those straight and sinuous, smooth and bumpy ribbons of asphalt, concrete, gravel, and dirt loom large in our photographs, too.

Although Minolta seemed insistent on labeling the 700si a new generation of AF SLR, we quickly realized this wasn’t the case. Having examined a preproduction 700si last fall, we concluded the new camera appeared to be something perhaps more valuable—a well-thought-out, vastly improved version of the Maxxum 7xi.

What was the theme of the 1994 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Show in Atlanta? It depends on whom you ask. Practically everyone agrees that PMA ’94 generated more enthusiasm than PMA ’93, spurred by a new feeling of confidence in the economy.

Our June 1944 issue urged parents-to-be to have their cameras ready as soon as the baby is born and to keep photographing the child periodically. The article gave hints on shooting and posing so the pictures would be portraits rather than mere snapshots, and it suggested vignetting to eliminate a distracting background.

In “A better blotter?” [“Help! March ’94, page 152], you mention using a four-inch mailing tube as the core for a screen drying roll. Please be advised there could be danger of print contamination from the cardboard mailing tube if there is very much water on the prints.

Why does 126-format film by Kodak cost about twice as much as a comparable film in 110 or 135 format, 24 exposures? The 126-format films available here are Kodacolor Gold 200 and Kodachrome 64; both are made in Mexico and run about $6 each. Is this because of pre-NAFTA tariffs, or is it Kodak’s way of phasing out the demand so it can finally stop making this format?
