Fool's gold?

One can find fake products of anything in Asia, so it’s been said. Now on the growing list of counterfeits is your favorite image catcher, Kodacolor Gold 100 color film. I picked up a dozen rolls of Gold 100 recently from a color lab in the Malaysian Borneo state of Sarawak without doubting their authenticity.

Just before dawn a phalanx of uniformed commandos move out into the mean streets. They arrive at the known trouble spot, reconnoiter the situation, raise their weapons to eye level, and, in a burst of flash fire . . . photograph the local garbage violations.

“The Publication by Photographers for Photographers and Their Friends” is how Outtakes, a new quarterly publication of stirring black-and-white photo essays describes itself. Launched in the fall of ’92 by Peter Howe, former director of photography at Life magazine, and Howard Chapnick, founder of Black Star photo agency, Outtakes is unique in several ways:

Two football teams face each other, not on the gridiron but on a busy intersection in downtown Chicago? A swan wades serenely across the marble floors of a government building? A deep chasm appears amid the hustle and bustle of a bus station? No, these aren’t Dadaistic representations of a skewed reality but delightfully manipulated photomontages, compiled in Surrational Images: Photomontages by Scott Mutter; published by the University of Illinois Press (Champaign, IL; hardcover, $27.50).

Photographic Center focuses on youngsters

“Mom, Dad, I’m bored” does not have to be the rallying cry of kids today. Besides the intrinsic reward of picture taking, photography instills responsibility and self-esteem in anyone old enough to compose through a viewfinder. For adults, there are many camera clubs and organizations available; for youngsters, the Photographic Center of Harlem (PCH) in New York City could be used as a model for what a community-based photography club can be.

Have manufacturers fouled up viewing screens for technological progress?
[no value]
[no value]

Herbert Keppler
In the beginning, there was nothing. The viewing screen of the 1949 Contax S, the first commercially successful 35mm eye-level SLR, was a pristine area, bright in the center with edge falloff like all other cameras having groundglass focusing screens.

An Olympus Styl-ish New Zoom
Another impossibly small 35-70mm model debuts

Dan Richards
“Look at how tiny it is!” This was uttered by one of our ordinarily très blasé editors as he picked up the Olympus Infinity Stylus Zoom, the new camera that proves even a weatherproof 35-70mm zoom-lensed point-and-shoot can do the clamshell thing.

It’s not often that we concentrate on the design and style of a camera (and it’s unusual for us to pay attention at all to a fixed-focus model). But if ever there was a camera that cried out “Look at my wonderful design!” it’s the Kodak Cameo Motor.

How red-eye prone is your came?
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
We know you know what red-eye is, and if you don’t know what causes it after all we’ve written about it, we give up. But there are ways of at least predicting the likelihood of your camera or cameras producing red-eye. Measure the distance (in millimeters—it’s a lot easier than sixteenths of an inch, trust us) between the edge of the lens and the edge of the flash, that is, the shortest distance between the flash and the lens.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY A PHANTOM?
Were these pictures of bridges really made by National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid? Did he ever exist?

Herbert Keppler
They come to Madison County, Iowa, now by the hundreds, using the book tucked under their arms as a guide. Yes, they do wish to see the famous covered bridges described and shown in the book, but also to find the house where National Geographic photographer Kincaid, while on the bridge assigment, met, fell in love, and had an intense, magical relationship with a local farmer’s wife, Francesca Johnson, for an alltoo-brief four days in 1965.

BIRD SHOOT With Roger Tory Peterson
The famed bird guidebook illustrator shares inside tips on how he photographs birds— and you can, too!
[no value]

Downs Matthews
As an illustrator who paints birds, Roger Tory Peterson has no peer. Yet, the world’s foremost bird-watcher and creator of the original field guide to the birds ranks at the top in bird photography as well. Seventy years ago, as a schoolboy in Jamestown, NY, Peterson delivered newspapers to earn money to buy a Premo No. 9 view camera with which to photograph birds on sensitized 4x5inch glass plates.

THE AWFUL TRUTH ABOUT MAGNIFIERS
Owning a good one is essential, but beware of the junk!

George Ward
It your eyes could focus sharply down to the end of your nose, you could kiss the need for magnifiers good-bye. But as you've probably already discovered, the human eye can only focus down to 10 to 14 inches. As you approach closer, blurriness becomes more acute.

How old can a roll of film be and still give you printable pictures? A heck of a lot older than we thought

“Develop before February 1st, 1910, Eastman Kodak Co.” reads the sticker attached to the reddish backing paper from a roll of unexposed Kodak 101 NC (for “non curl”) film, sent in by reader Robert Brightman of Great Neck, NY. He had offered me the ancient roll for $50, but being a congenital skinflint, I told Bob I'd give him $50 only if I could get a printable image; he’d have to settle for $25 if I couldn’t.
