Are you faced with that annual nutcracker of what to get a favorite shutterbug for the holidays? A specialist in feel-good photography, Collins Publishing (publishers of A Day in the Life of America and Christmas in America, among other titles) has a suggestion: its 1992 pictorial compendium about you know what country.
We’ve wondered aloud several times about the usefulness of constant-magnification zooming, which goes by a lot of names: autozoom, auto composition, and numerous trade names. These systems automatically maintain the same magnification regardless of how close or far you are from the subject.
Oh no, you're saying, it's yet another one of those nerdy articles that tells you, in painstaking detail, how to test your new camera by doing fascinating things like photographing blank walls as you crossreference your camera manual with the Dewey decimal system.
In terms of size, December of 1942 was a really big month for POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY: We ran almost 230 pages. And to cover expenses, we had to double the price to 50 cents. The reason for all this was the special 120-page salon section that included the winning photos in our annual picture contest, prizewinners in the Newspaper National Snapshot Awards Contest, and five portfolios of pictures of America at war.

I’d like to tell you that this picture was the result of hours of careful planning and meticulous preparation, but sometimes in travel photography, the best photos are just gifts you find along the road. It was mid-autumn, and I was in the Cotswolds, about 90 miles outside of London, shooting an assignment for Travel and Leisure's special English-countryside issue.
If you’ve got a camcorder, you’ve probably got a fade control—that little button that causes the image to gradually get darker and darker until it’s totally eclipsed. Or it lets you start with a black screen that gradually brightens into a picture.

Off-center sunrise N.R. This is an interesting use of a wide-angle lens, which enabled the photographer to move in close and give some dominance to the objects in the foreground. The exposure should have been more for the sunrise than for the material in the foreground.
Alma Davenport de la Ronde's 21st-century gum bichromates

That Alma Davenport de la Ronde’s stunning pictures are so painterly belies that they are, in truth, considerably more photographic than much of today’s ordinary photography. Indeed, while they are based on a 19th-century process (gum bichromate), they incorporate everything from modern slide film to four-colorseparation technology on their way to becoming finished prints on watercolor paper.
While the worldwide economy continues to slog along in the doldrums, the leading camera manufacturers are going full steam ahead bringing forth scintillating new models, especially autofocus SLRs at or near the top of their respective lines.

The picture in “Your Best Shot” of your September ’92 issue that won second place [page 9] is incorrectly labeled. You called the funnel cloud a tornado when in fact it is a waterspout. A waterspout is a whirling vortex of water that has a vapor-like look that is translucent.
