According to our guide to Greek muses, Terpsichore presided over dance; Calliope, music; and Erato, poetry; but what about the photographic muse? Well, whoever she is, we know this: Come this spring, she’ll be bound for Houston when that city becomes the focal point of world photography.

YOUR BEST SHOT

$300
1st($300) Hilarious huddle: Success often starts from the ground up. Darren Ellis of Walla Walla, WA, took the idea literally, situating himself flat on his back and allowing these irrepressible kids to swarm all over him in a fraternizing display of youthful exuberance. Ellis was able to capture the group from grin to shining grin using a Nikon F4S and a superwide 15mm f/2.8 Sigma fisheye. A Nikon SB-24 Speedlight with a LumiQuest bounce reflector attached to the head widened out the flash and helped illuminate every freckle. Exposure, 1/250 sec at f/5.6; film, Kodak Ektapress 100.

($200) Surreallol istic footwear: 2nd In a masterful example of humorously ironic juxtaposition, P. Kevin Morley of Richmond, VA, combined pairs of high-heeled shoes with disembodied and injured limbs. Yet it is the subtle but stunning use of colorization that gives this photograph a harmonious and timeless quality. Morley used a Nikon F4S with a 105mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens, exposing on Kodak Plus-X, printing on Kodak Ektalure paper, then hand-coloring with oils, watercolors, and pencils. Exposure, 1/60 sec at f/16.

($50) Behold, sunflowers! Provence, in the south of France, is where Duke Smith of Golden, CO, found this floriculturalist’s field of dreams. Choosing a small enough aperture to get detail in both the foreground and background, he shot with a Mamiya Sekor 500 DTL and 28mm f/2.5 Vivitar lens, exposing at f/11 for 1/125 sec on Kodak Ektar 125. ▼

3rd($100) American dream: If you think this flag is huge, wait till you see the pole! This enormous stars and stripes all but blocked out the sky during a welcome-home parade paying homage to our forces in the Persian Gulf. Gianni Pirovano of San Diego used a Nikon FA with a 20mm f/3.5 Nikkor lens and shot at a low angle to get a sky-filling banner. Exposure, unrecorded; patriotic colors vibrantly captured on Fujichrome 100.

Sunlight and spray: A slowish shutter speed allows the droplets of water to blur as they fall earthward but freezes the spray bouncing off the arm of the lawnchair. Phillip M. Augustavo of Seattle used a Pentax ME Super and 100mm f/2.8 SMC Pentax-M lens to capture this taste of summer joys in the middle of February. Strong directional sunlight makes the shot. Exposure, 1/30 sec at f/5.6; film, Kodak Ektachrome 100.

Point-and-shoot cameras work. With them, a person with limited photographic knowledge can take pictures with sharpness and exposure accuracy that would have been impossible in decades past with a fixed-setting camera.

By and large, what we expect from cameras in terms of convenience has increased enormously, while the quality many of us seek in actual pictures seems to be shrinking day by day. When Japanese cameras burst on the scene in the 1950s and fought to be taken not as toys but seriously, they had to prove their abilities.

Buenos dias! If you’re one of the few in the world who fail to recognize this Spanish greeting as “good morning,” it also describes the start of every day on the island of Cozumel. You may be asking yourself, “Why visit a Mexican island off the Yucatan Peninsula when there are so many fantastic places in the world to see?”

TORA/HIRO TAKE ON THE CALENDAR
Shooting numbers appeared easy, but finding 9, 13, 23, and 31 brought sore feet.

[no value]
Every year, before January 1, zillions of new photographic calendars appear, each with 12 or more beautiful photographs and the usual 365 printed numerals (366 in 1992). Numbers don’t go very far up: from 1 to 28, 29, 30, or 31, depending on the month of the year; so what could be so hard doing those paltry few numbers as photographs?

It looks like an expensive bag and on cursory examination seems well made. Won’t you be surprised when the first time you get it wet your camera gear needs swimming lessons!

At last, your first photo exhibit. You've included a lovely picture of your neighbor in her garden, but you have no model release. In fact, you never thought of asking her to sign one. You also have pictures of children in the park and a bazaar vendor in Belgium, and in the back of your mind is a nagging suspicion that perhaps you should have gotten releases.

This sign is appearing with ever-increasing frequency at places visited by cameratoting tourists. I checked out the reasons in several places and received some interesting (and logical) answers. Have AA alkaline and nicad batteries met their match? Nickel metal-hydride batteries offer an alternative.

James Bailey
By far, the most widely 'used consumer battery is the familiar AA cell. So it’s not surprising that many shoeand handle-mount electronic-flash units are powered by from two to eight AA batteries. While less expensive carbon cells can usually power photo equipment for a few shots in emergencies, the more expensive alkaline cells give you the most power or flashes before you need to change batteries.

Clearly, POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY could perform a valuable service by actually testing unique equipment. So often we must suffer through comparisons that are only a rehash of manufacturers’ easily obtained literature. Case in point: “6x7 Times Four“ [November '91, page 79].
