With regard to the item titled “Naked Repression" (“Snapshots,” July '89. page 12). I felt considerably outraged at what appears to be an attempt by the federal government to stifle the true photographer’s creativity. While I, too, find blatant pornography offensive, I can differentiate between that and art, and there are those people with small perceptive skills who do label fine art with the name of that form of so-called photography.

Sicily, preface by Denis Mack Smith, captions by Matteo Collura. Rizzoli, New York; 146 pages; 143 color photographs; hardcover, $60. Sicily encompasses such a wealth of contrasts and history that it's appropriate that a book devoted to a tiny island features the work of 10 different photographers.

Should you take a chance on out-of-date color film?
Past its prime
Seal out moisture
[no value]
[no value]
George Schaub
Whenever I go into my local photo store, I see a temptingly priced display of out-of-date color film. To buy or not to buy, that is the question, especially if I'm paying anywhere from 20 to 50 percent less than the original cost. Though the economy of the transaction can’t be denied, I always wonder if I'll get burned for my cheapo ways.

Think architecture is boring? Take a shot at Miami Beach's art deco district
Mixed-up buildings

Lisl Dennis
I used almost every lens in my gadget bag during a two-day stay in Miami Beach. My selfassigned project was to shoot the high style of the city’s largely refurbished art deco district, but I found ample time to enjoy the local color, too. Miami Beach has been in social and economic transition for more than a decade.

Did you ever see the film Man vs Cat? Probably not, unless you were in one of my film-making workshops years ago. It’s a little movie I made when super 8 was the only home-movie game in town. I did it to demonstrate the mistakes beginning moviemakers make most often.

CANON’S NEW POINT & ZOOM

The Canon Sure Shot Zoom XL is one of the heftier members of the expanding ranks of zoom-lens point-and-shoot 35s. At 1 pound, 6.2 ounces, it's nearly as heavy as some SLRs, but it’s quite comfortable to hold, with a rubberized “anatomical” grip that places your index finger naturally over the shutter button.

THE TIME MACHINE
Is there a device for making images timeless and transporting the past into the future? Yes—it’s called a camera.
SEVEN TIME TRIPS
[no value]

Arthur Goldsmith
The camera is a time machine. Unlike the device in H.G. Wells’ famous novel of that name, it can’t physically transport us backward and forward through the time stream, but it does enable us to pluck selected moments out of time, freeze-framing them in permanent visual form for later enjoyment, study, and sharing.

l. An easy load: We didn’t trust autoloading for at least 30 rolls, but it works (although we still check the LCD loadingconfirmation signals, which work via a mechanical coupling and are pretty reliable). 2. Push here: They truly are do-everything cameras, little robots that do all the busy work and let you concentrate on the subject, lighting, and decisive moment.

With the introduction of the 7000i, Minolta introduced a new level of SLR technology. Improvements were made, not only to the autofocusing and metering systems, but to the very concept of the SLR camera. The linking of these two systems, which results in the camera identifying the actual subject then adjusting the exposure accordingly, seems basic but had not been properly addressed until the development of the 7000i.

cuculoris
$135
What’s a “cuculoris”? If you guessed it’s a new type of Swiss cheese, you're not too far off the mark—that’s what this type of lighting screen looks like. “Cukes” have actually been around a long time and are used to create dappled backgrounds, moody portrait lighting or, with deliberate underexposure, a moonlight-through-trees effect. The Matthews Cuculoris recreates this classic accessory in wood with an attached ⅜-inch pin for mounting in standard studio-light clamps. It comes in three sizes: 18 × 24 ($69), 24 × 36 ($80), and 48 × 48 ($135). Also available is the Celo Cuculoris, made of mesh scrim material with the dapple patterns burned into it to create a more subtle pattern. It’s available in 18 × 24 ($40), 24 × 36 ($57), and 40 × 40 ($84) sizes. With both, the sharpness, spread, and intensity of the light pattern are varied by changing the angle and distance of the source light. Matthews Studio Equipment, Inc., Dept. video camera bags
$80
A new line of video camera bags from Kiwi features tough but featherlight linings of corrugated high-impact plastic, offering heavy-duty protection with little added weight. Each surface is triple lined with this “cellular armor” and two layers of resilient foam. The bag also features a specially contoured and lined no-slip shoulder strap and a nonabrasive, clothing-safe outer skin of weatherproof vinyl. Known as the V-Series (V-39, V-69, and V-79), each comes in gray or black and carries suggested retail prices between $45 and $80. Kiwi, 3702 N.W. 82nd St., Miami, FL 33147.

Amphibico Amphibian VII
$875
What has two arms, one large eye, and dwells in the depths of the sea? Answer: the Amphibico Amphibian VII ($1,375), an underwater housing designed for the Sony CCD-VII 8mm video camcorder. Operating down to 350 feet, the aluminum VII connects to the camcorder via an electronic module. External controls allow selection of auto or manual focus, white balance, focus and zoom, and record. The company says the optics are fully corrected for underwater use and that the built-in amphibious microphone is noise-free. An additional port allows you to connect it to an underwater communications receiver or to a surface video. The multijointed light-bracket sets ($595 single, $875 dual) allow you to put fish in their best light. Amphibico, Inc., 9563 Côte de Liesse, Dorval, Quebec, H9P 1A3 Canada.

Pro Tect-lt
$14.50
Where the heck do you put those lens caps from big video lenses (or big teles for your still camera)? The only way you could get some of them in a normal pocket would be to crumple them in a trash compactor; that’s precisely the idea behind the Pro Tect-lt ($14.50), except that you just fold or squash it in your hand and stuff it in a pocket. Don’t worry, even 90-pound weaklings can do it. Pro Tect-lt is made of padded, vinyl-coated cloth, secured to the lens with an elastic cuff. One size fits lenses six inches across or less. “Hi Speed” version of the Harris Photoguide
$9.97

The new “Hi Speed” version of the Harris Photoguide ($9.97), a cardboard calculator, covers film speeds from ISO 400 to 64,000. Its traditional dial index has settings that include cloudy, bright, sunset, minimal office illumination, home interiors, candlelighted close-ups, skylines at night, and moonlight. Also available is the revised version of the original Harris Photoguide ($9.97), for film speeds of ISO 12 to 6400. Both guides are $14.97. Harris Photoguides, P.O. Drawer B, Rochester. NY 14617.

Wess general-purpose slide mounts
$13
So what’s new and improved about Wess general-purpose slide mounts, those handy hinged plastic gizmos that look and work like dollhouse-sized enlargement easels? When open, the retainers are designed to hold the slide loosely enough so that you can easily insert a slide without bowing it, then quickly center it over the opening without danger of fingerprints or damage. Once the mount is snapped closed, no adhesive is necessary to keep transparencies in place, even with two sandwiched images, Wess claims. The 3-mm-wide mounts will fit only wide-slot slide trays (read: Carousel 80, not 140). They are available in both glassless ($7.25/box of 50) and anti-Newton-glass ($13/box of 50) versions. Add $1.25 and $2, respectively, for full-frame mounts. Wess Plastic, Inc., 50 Schmitt Blvd., Farmingdale, NY 11735-1484.

The bag's maker claims that the dome-like 25 × 22 × 15-inch Changing Room gives you more space than any other changing bag. making it ideal for loading 4 × 5 or 8 × 10 film holders. Photoflex, 254 E. Hacienda Ave., Campbell. CA 95008.

Econotemp
$44
Darkroom workers: Fumbling with thermometers under running water can be inaccurate as well as inconvenient. The Econotemp ($44) is a better idea: a moderately priced temperature monitor. Fully assembled and complete with brass fittings. the Econotemp will attach to most faucets via its female garden-hose thread. The three-inch-diameter dial thermometer reads from 30 to 130°F in ½ degrees; the scale reads in Celsius as well. The fully immersed thermometer has an angled dial for easy viewing. Leedal Inc., 1918 S. Prairie Ave., Chicago. IE 60616.
