Fickleness, thy name is Fame. Last year Madonna was the sweetheart of the media set. This year that title must go to a different New York lady, the Statue of Liberty. The harbor hoopla has inspired a number of photo exhibits. Our favorite very well may be the New York State sponsored “Taking Liberties,” organized by Anthony Bannon.

Carl Purcell
Stretched out on the white-sand beach of Contadora, a resort island of Panama, the warm waters of the Pacific caressing my feet, I couldn’t think of a nicer place to escape the harsh winter weather of my hometown. Given the opportunity, I would have gladly spent the rest of the winter in this tropical paradise, but I had only six days to explore and record the many visually exciting destinations in Panama.

If ever a photographer lived up to George Bernard Shaw’s description that he was like a codfish that lays a hundred thousand eggs in the hope that one will come to fruition, it was Garry Winogrand. He was one of the most prolific shooters I ever met, and if he hadn’t burned up several 36-exposure rolls of film before lunch, it was hardly a working day for him.

Throughout history, many schemes have evolved to help artists utilize the space within their images to best advantage. One of these schemes, the so-called rules of composition, has dominated camera club and other photographic judgings.

There is special pleasure in viewing a black-and-white print with a full range of values, where highlights are just below paper white and subtle details reveal themselves in the shadows. For many lovers of photography, the very fabric that holds the picture together is the grain.

The OM-3 is a camera for purists: Unlike the vast majority of single-lens reflex (SLR) models, it offers no exposure automation. To set the exposure, the user adjusts the lens-aperture and/or shutterspeed settings to match a liquid-crystal (LCD) bar to a mark in the viewfinder.

For a camera that is bannered as being strictly mechanical, the OM-3’s electronic complexity is impressive. Its sophisticated metering system is nearly the same as that used in its more automatic mate, the OM-4 (POP PHOTO, July'84). Like the OM-4, the OM-3 has a compound photocell.

Bob Schwalberg
The wonder of the ultrawide-angle lens is an excitement of sweeping panoramic vision, rushing lines, and strange effects. Indoors, space appears to be enlarged as objects within the frame are reduced. Viewed through an SLR, the ultrawide world looms larger and all of its bits and pieces seem smaller.

She is one of the pioneers in the recognition of photography as a fine art; she stands as the world’s foremost master of the exquisite lost photographic art of platinum printing; and she illustrates vitally her innate conviction that esthetic statements are enriched and made stronger when they answer humane concerns.”

Howard Chapnick
Documentary photography is often equated with the “ashcan school” of photography. There is a great misconception that the documentary photographer’s exclusive concerns are, and should be, downbeat. That misconception has been perpetuated by many documentary photographers’ subject matter: problems affecting the world—poverty, hunger, war, disease, and drought.

How many of you wish you could make the kind of closeups that cause people to sit up and take notice? If you aren’t goofing in basic ways, it could be that you are not magnifying your subject enough. Over years of being entranced by closeups, I’ve found it can really pay to move into an ultraclose-up realm, which starts at about life-size and goes to about 4½ times life-size magnification.

In my excitement to get a shot of this cute Mexican child, I failed to notice a distracting background highlight, or pay attention to his expression. Lowering the camera a bit eliminated the background hot spot. But the child’s expression still didn’t do much for me.

CREATIVE CITYSCAPES
Nature-photography techniques can clean up your city shots

Bryan F. Peterson
The favorite subject of most amateur photographers is nature: sunsets at the beach, autumn leaves on the forest floor, closeups of dew drops on a spider web. For this standard repertoire of universally admired pictures, photographers have developed certain techniques. For example, in the alpine meadows, you’re apt to practice the art of selective focus.

Go ahead, make my day—say “Cheese!” (Isn’t it better to have a camera that looks like a gun than the other way’round?)

Eaton S. Lothrop
A snap shot (a quick, unaimed shot) is made with a gun, a snapshot with a camera. I assume that the second term was derived from the first, in the late 1800s, although I don’t know how one could ever find out for sure. But one instance in which both terms operate is with the use of "gun" cameras.

POP PHOTO’S new camera test (November ’85 issue, p. 56) has indeed improved considerably thanks to streamlining the relevant data. Congratulations in particular to Norman Goldberg and Michele Frank for the improved presentation of technical data.
