Legend has it that the famous 19th-century French writer Guy de Maupassant used to harass his friends with the constant boast, “Give me a subject, any subject, and I’ll write a story about it." One acquaintance finally responded (more or less) with, “All right, already, write me a story about a piece of string.”

I use Perma Wash, an aid for treating fixed film and prints prior to washing. Manufacturer's directions call for adding three oz. of the product to one gallon of water. How can I measure that amount of Perma Wash (or ¾ oz.) to add to one quart of water without buying a suitably small graduate?

Processing my color-negative film was easy. I gave it to my photo dealer to be sent to Kodak with instructions: “Process Only, Do Not Print, Do Not Cut.” It cost me $1.95 per roll. Kodak sent back my processed Kodacolor VR 100 color negatives in a continuous strip so I could cut it into strips of any length I liked.

That photograph on top is of my grandfather in front of his store, and it was taken almost 90 years ago. Fully programmed, automatic-exposure SLRs have become extremely popular with all sorts of snapshooters. Beginners and occasional snapshooters both like the programmed mode because it lets them leave exposure decisions to the machine; professionals are turning more and more to programmed exposure in fast-changing situations which might not give them enough time to manually adjust the camera’s controls.

If the golden era of the single, all-purpose, superwide-to-supertelephoto lens is not yet here, we’re at least standing on the threshold with the latest crop of extended-range, long-reach zooms. I’m talking about “superzooms,” optics with a focal-length (zoom) ratio of 4:1 or higher that offer powerful zooming and immense versatility.

Video cameras have an inherent electronic disposition toward crystal-clear pictures with bright, realistic colors, sharp contrast, and great depth of field. You can take one of today’s cameras out of its box and start shooting technically precise views in a few minutes. But as the technology makes it so easy to record realistically, videographers have begun to put optical devices over their lens to contribute their own interpretation, to creatively control their images.

Patricia Bosworth
Diane Arbus: Magazine Work, photographs and texts by Diane Arbus; essay by Thomas W. Southall; Millerton, N.Y.: Aperture, 1984; hardcover, $35. A sneering Mae West cuddling her pet monkey; Norman Mailer looking pugnacious; Jacqueline Susann sitting on her husband Irving Mansfield’s lap in a Beverly Hills hotel room, both incongruously in bathing suits; a ghostly Brenda Frazier, an elegant Madame Alix Grès, Marcello Mastroianni, Charles Atlas, the Gish sisters in the snow, poets W.H. Auden and Marianne Moore clutching each other—these are just a few of the 100 photographs that can be seen in Diane Arbus: Magazine Work.

Norman Schreiber
Our crack correspondent followed the well-worn Manhattan footpath that led from a Chinatown restaurant to an espresso house in Little Italy. Suddenly, he and his friends were stopped by photographs in the window of a storefront. At first, the array of smiling faces seemed as one with the windows of a million portrait studios across the country.

Photographic museums have recently received quite a bit of attention. And, in at least one instance, generated controversy. But then, photographic museums have also had their ups and downs in the past. The American Museum of Photography, founded by the energetic Dr. Louis Walton Sipley, opened in Philadelphia in December 1940.

Aberrations: A flawlessly manufactured lens may still exhibit residual aberrations (image faults). Often, certain aberrations are permitted by the designer to minimize others felt to be more harmful to image quality. Astigmatism: Causes lines radial to the optical axis, and lines perpendicular to these, to focus in two different planes.
