I found the article in your July issue, "Starting in Photography after 70," of particular interest. Sophie Aksel's story is inspiring. I would like my hobbyless, 75-year-old father to have a similar experience. It would have been helpful if Sophie's "mentor" had been mentioned so that my father could contact this mystery woman.

Experience the glory of the midnight sun and scenery in Finland

Carl Purcell
The tall blond stewardess on my flight to Helsinki had glacial blue eyes, steady and intense, but sparkling with flecks of warmth and humor. I was to see these same blue eyes again and again throughout Finland in the next 10 days, the product of dominant genes left by some amorous Norsemen in bygone years.

Larry Sribnick
A good photograph is hard to improve. However, many of us make photographs that are well-exposed and composed, but are just plain dull. Experimentation can sometimes turn one of these “also rans” into a winner. One popular way of manipulating a photograph is to print it through a screen that adds a texture or pattern to the image.

Lazaro Blanco is a prominent Mexican photographer who is world-renowned for his documentation of the scenes and people of his native land. For this, he has found his Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex (TLR) an invaluable tool, preferring it for practical and, above all, psychological reasons over eye-level SLRs or rangefinder cameras.

It sometimes takes only a small change in color to make a large change in the emotional effect of a color photograph. This can be easily achieved by using CC (color-compensating) filters. When I visited the church at El Tule near Oaxaca, Mexico, I first photographed it without a CC filter (see photo on top).

“Photography in California”: a major traveling show of West Coast work arouses strong controversy

Dana Asbury
Photography is very much in the public eye these days. A major show entitled Photography in California 1945-1980 opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in January 1984, traveled to Akron and Washington, D.C., and will be in Los Angeles (Municipal Art Gallery, Sept. 7-Oct. 21), Ithaca (Cornell University, Nov.9-Dec. 30), Atlanta (High Museum, Feb. 15-April 14, 1985), Essen, West Germany (Museum Folkwang, June 7-Aug. 4, 1985), Paris (Centre Georges Pompidou, Sept. 6-Nov. 3, 1985), and San Diego (Museum of Photographic Arts, Jan. 8-Feb. 24, 1986). Containing nearly 250 works by 50 photographers, the show, as a curatorial statement, has generated a good deal of controversy.

BUILD A FOLD-OUT REFLECTOR

This versatile, three-sectioned reflector unfolds to serve for anything from head to full-length fill. I started with a 4x8-ft. foam-core board, % in. thick, bought in an art-supply store. After cutting it down to 6x4 ft., I scored it—not all the way through—with a blade and ruler into three even sections, one-third down from the top on one side, one-third up from the bottom on the other. Now the board's length could be folded like an accordion.

Bob Schwalberg
Today’s new breed of high-tech colorprint films combines smoother grain and surprising sharpness with real gains in color quality. Huge blowups—even beyond 20X—are now becoming crisply and colorfully routine. By reinventing almost every feature of the color negative, even to the extent of tailoring the shapes of silver-halide crystals to optimize their light response, laboratory geniuses of the photographic industry (in the U.S., Japan, Germany, and Italy) have raised the traditional tradeoff between film speed and picture quality to new levels of excellence.

“I’m a very meticulous filer,” said Alfred Gescheidt. “I have a file called ‘Alley Cats.’ When I first came back to New York from the West Coast in 1951,1 wandered the city and photographed stray cats, lost cats, and store cats. The pictures never were published, and that sort of ate away at me.

Need help in setting up a home darkroom? Here are some ingenious ideas to consider
[no value]

Cora Wright Kennedy
I can't count the number of times I have been asked by beginners how to set up a darkroom for black-andwhite printing. Often they live in a small studio apartment, or can use only their bedroom. Others have thought about turning the bath room or kitchen into a darkroom, but are stymied by the vicissitudes of family life.

I understand why Nikon warns Nikonos underwater-camera owners that the rubber “O” ring seals should be properly seated, in good condition, and well lubricated so the camera stays watertight. But does it really matter if the owner uses that official Nikon-brand “O” ring lubricant? The stuff seems to resemble petroleum jelly that is so much easier to obtain.
