A few weeks ago, I thought about the few great people left in this world. The first person that came into my mind was Ansel Adams. Today, I was shocked and depressed to hear about his passing away. I am 15 years old, and photography has been one of my interests for a while now.

Teach yourself: Movie Maker turns home computer into animation studio
[no value]
[no value]
Leendert Drukker
Animation is the ultimate in imaginative filmmaking, because it is entirely a product of the individual; it doesn’t depend on fortuity, a lucky moment, actors, location, travel, or scenery. Wonders have been created with a simple camera and a single load of film by shooting molded clay, arrangements of buttons, match sticks, or pipe cleaners, frame by frame.

A look at 8-mm video technology and its future implications
[no value]
[no value]
Don Leavitt
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the introduction of 8-mm video equipment at the winter consumer-electronics show in Las Vegas was the extent to which this new format dominated the show. In an industry that has become jaded by a combination of constantly evolving whizz-bang high technology and declining prices for same, it’s fairly difficult to rouse the interest of professionals in any lasting way for still another new technology.

Mark Klett’s interpretation of the Western landscape; William Eggleston’s portfolio of Elvis’ Graceland
[no value]

Dana Asbury
Photographic representations of the Western landscape have a strong tradition over 100 years old. Mark Klett is as aware of that tradition as anyone; as the chief photographer for the Rephotographic Survey Project, he spent more than three years searching for and rephotographing the exact sites of pictures made in the late 19th century by such photographers as William Henry Jackson and Timothy O’ Sullivan.

TRAVELER’S CAMERA
A personal rating system for some of the world’s great photo destinations
BOOKS IN BRIEF
[no value]

Carl Purcell
Travel photography has a special, romantic appeal. Most people like to look at magazines that portray exotic destinations in the far corners of the world, and slide lectures and travelogues continue to be extremely popular. Such words and pictures are often clichés, and it is up to us to see the world with fresh eyes, to interpret it with sensitivity.

Now retired, Garfield is belatedly receiving due recognition for his photographs, with eight of them acquired by the Smithsonian Institution, a recent major exhibition at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and other exhibitions coming up.

ZOOMS for PORTRAITS?

Thom O’Connor
When I do a portrait, I use six lenses—or at least I did before sampling some modern zooms. For a trial run, I replaced my single-focal-length optics with two Zoom Nikkors, a 25→50-mm f/4 and an 80→200-mm f/4. In portraiture, once the lighting problems have been solved and the subject and I start to relax, composition and framing become critical.

Leendert Drukker
Polaroid plans to have an 8-mm home-video system, compatible with Kodak’s and G.E.’s, on the market before the end of this year. The centerpiece is a combined camera/recorder that looks much like a super 8 camera, but has a solid-state, charge-coupled device as image sensor, and uses the now-standard 8-mm videocassette.

THE COLOR DARKROOM
It’s a lot cheaper to print from a color negative, so here’s how to make color negatives from slides
[no value]
[no value]
Larry Sribnick
There are two common ways to make a color print from a slide. The first is to make a print directly from the slide with one of the reversal-type processes such as Agfachrome-Speed, Cibachrome, Ektachrome, or Ektaflex. The alternative to reversal printing is the negative-to-positive technique, using an internegative.

These three Kiron lenses have a common characteristic that endears them to an experimenter like myself. The front of the lens mount does not revolve—neither while you focus them nor when you change the focal length. Thus, polarizers, diffraction gratings, graduated Filters, matte boxes, and similar devices maintain their orientation.

As a wrap-up to this four-part series on choosing the best lens, let’s look closely at our lens-performance charts and data, as well as our lens-test glossary. Although lens faults (aberrations) nearly always are seen in combinations, our charts describe them individually because there are specific testing techniques for isolating them.
