As a poet, Daniel Pons is an outstanding photographer [“Daniel Pons, Poet/Photographer,” March issue]. Perhaps French should not be translated into any other language, especially English. French writing is for French readers only.

France pleases the eye and stimulates the imagination. I recently went back for a nostalgic photographic journey through this eminently civilized country. My trip included the Riviera and the Carnival at Nice, followed by a breathtaking train ride at 170 mph from Marseilles to Paris.

The variety of disguises in which cameras have appeared is amazing. Previously I have mentioned cameras that look like binoculars, monoculars, cigarette packs and lighters, hats and cravats, pocket and wrist watches. And there were those made to be concealed under vests and in shoes.

Every year at family gatherings, I find myself with camera in hand, shooting smiling faces and decorated birthday cakes. Every year, I also find myself faced with a growing number of prints and transparencies that generally end up in a large cardboard box where they remain until one of my children digs them out.

A good friend of mine, Dick Bernard, recently asked if there was such a thing as a universal film—a film that could be used when you weren't quite sure of what the end product would be: a slide, print, or whatever. My answer was that if you knew you would need slides but might need prints, use a color-slide film.

Both of these quite different photographs were made at an indoor market in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Work of Italian Futurists in American debut; fashion and animals; a decade of “People”
[no value]
[no value]
Natalie Canavor
“A speeding automobile is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace,” wrote an Italian poet/ dramatist named F.T. Marinetti in 1909. He was issuing a manifesto calling for the establishment of a new art movement: Futurism. Along with all aspects of human endeavor, art was henceforth to discard the past (“We want to free our country from the fetid gangrene of professors, archeologists, guides, and antique dealers” was how he phrased it) and embody the dynamism, excitement, and electricity of the modern urban machine age.

Let's assume you can make a series of shots with each of the lenses and choose the one you'll buy on the basis of the pictures.

I've been in love with zoom lenses ever since my first zoom shot was published in 1960. But no affair is complete without lovers' quarrels; early zooms were certainly okay for playing around, but not to live with. I couldn't exhibit true love for lenses that were slow, marginally sharp and, for the most part, incapable of focusing close enough to suit my requirements.

Just a few years ago, dedicated electronic-flash units from manufacturers other than the camera companies and a couple of large independents were scarce. Now that is no longer true. Hasselblad introduced their PCP80 perspective-control slide projector for 2¼ slides (first seen at photokina '82) to the American market. “Keystoning,” the distortion that occurs when projectors are tilted to raise the screen image above the viewers' heads, is said to have been eliminated by the PCP80, in which the lens and the entire lighting system move rather than the projector itself, always keeping the slide parallel to the screen.

Five new cameras—four of these wooden models—were shown at PMA, while such majors as Sinar, Linhof, and Toyo stood pat, and others, including Cambo and Horseman, were absent due to the technicality of being imported by a retailer, Calumet of Chicago.

The image you see on the focusing screen of your SLR camera is not always the image that will actually appear in the finished picture. Today's SLRs all have lenses with automatic diaphragms. While you focus, the diaphragm of your lens remains fully open and is closed down to a smaller opening just before you make the exposure.

On writing criticism
What criticism isn't
What criticism is and does
A note for readers
[no value]
[no value]
David Vestal
It isn't mainly self-expression. The critic's self is there but needs no emphasis. It needs restraint. The writer is not his own subject. The subject is, or should be, the work being criticized. This is obvious but much overlooked. “Critique” is a noun in English, not a verb.

The Photographer's Almanac, by Peter Miller and Janet Nelson. Boston, Ma.: Little, Brown and Co., 1983; 277 pp.; hardcover, $24.95; paperback, $15.50. One of the most complete compendia of practical photographic data I have encountered in a single volume, The Photographer's Almanac can be used for career guidance (see its chapters on the various aspects of the profession and the ins-and-outs of photographic education); as an equipment manual (chapters on the various kinds of cameras in use today, lenses, filters, meters, flash devices, etc.); for basic instruction in darkroom technique; as well as a reference source for other useful bits of information.

Minolta's new portable video system includes two cameras (an autofocusing K-800S and a more modest manual sibling, K-770S); a five-head recorder that weighs under eight pounds; and its companion cable-ready tuner. Despite its imposing look and its weight, the K-800S AF balances beautifully on the shoulder and is basically easy to operate.

1. The Seller must ship your order within 30 days of receiving it, unless the advertisement clearly states it'll take longer. 2. If it appears that your order will not be shipped when promised, the Seller must notify you in writing in advance of the promised date, giving a definite new date, if known, and offering you the opportunity to cancel the order with a refund or consent to a definite delayed shipping date or an indefinite delay.
