As an optometrist who enjoys photography, I read with great interest your article concerning taking photos through “specs” (“How to Be Happy though Hyperopic,” January issue). Two points, I feel, need more comment. The article implies that a person’s Rx can be “ground sharper” to allow for better vision than 20/20.

I clearly remember the day I decided to become a free lance. I was commuting to my office on Rockville Pike in suburban Washington, the cold sleet of a March morning hitting my windshield as the wiper blades struggled to cut through the freezing mud and water.

The “best” lens in the group is the one that does what you want the way you want it to

Norman Goldberg
Year after year, your number one question is the same: which of a group of similar lenses is “the best?” And this question doesn’t only come from beginners confused by the claims of rival manufacturers. I’ve been asked the same question by optical scientists who (being carefully nonchalant and very discreet) have taken me aside at optical conventions for advice.

This winter’s Consumer Electronics Show, held in Las Vegas, will go down in video history as marking Kodak’s introduction of an 8-mm system. Much to the chagrin of most video manufacturers, it demonstrated the combination camera/recorder (camcorder) already described in last month’s issue.

Dana Asbury
SAN FRANCISCO—Photographers often become well known by a certain recognizable stylistic device. And when they do, it is often exceedingly difficult to give up that key to recognition and go on to new explorations. The new color photographs by Richard Misrach, on view from Dec. 1, 1983 to Jan. 21, 1984 at the Grapestake Gallery, represent a breaking away from the flash-lighted night photographs that had become his signature.

Every careful darkroom worker knows that his enlarger should be in perfect alignment. Right?

Larry Sribnick
Enlarger alignment is something we are all aware of but most of us do nothing about. The assumption is that a new enlarger comes properly aligned and stays that way. The only time we start to think about the alignment of our enlargers is when print sharpness has been noticeably affected.

Aberrations: A flawlessly manfactured lens may still exhibit residual aberrations (image faults). Often, certain aberrations are permitted by the designer to minimize others felt to be more harmful to image quality. Astigmatism: Causes lines radial to the optical axis, and lines perpendicular to these, to focus in two different planes.

Is a one-piece 8-mm video “camcorder” the wave of the future? I have some doubts
BOOKS IN BRIEF
[no value]
[no value]
Michele A. Frank
Having seen and handled some of the new 8-mm video systems, I have come away with several impressions. The first is that, even though they are portable, this new breed of camcorder is still rather large and bulky. A typical unit is much greater in size and weight (usually about five to six pounds) than one would expect for such a diminutive format.

Robert E. Sosa, Richmond, Va. Marks such as these are the result of some sort of distinct, localized pressure on film before processing. And the usual cause of that pressure is crimping the film as you wind it on the reel. The problem is more prevalent with 120 roll film (such as yours) than with the much narrower 35-mm films.

It’s something of a paradox that during the past three or four years, at a time when despite a recession millions of new SLR and compact cameras were sold and film consumption increased steadily, darkroom activity was in a slump—at least as measured by retail sales figures, especially of enlargers.

The Leica R4 is the latest in an evolutionary chain that began in 1965 when Leitz joined the mainstream by introducing the Leicaflex. The sophistication of the Leica R4 is a far cry from its Leicaflex ancestor. For example: the R4 offers five modes of operation, with two kinds of metering in one of these modes.

If history can be delineated by newspaper headlines, milestones in the development of auto-exposure (AE) cameras might be marked by contemporaneous carps, quips, and criticisms. When the Old Guard was forced to drop “It won’t work,” (because it did!), a popular pretension was that AE cameras would soon eliminate the need for photographers, the newest invention being the “composition viewfinder” that rings a bell to indicate good pictorial arrangements.
