The EWA K-35 Matte Box system
$149.95
The EWA K-35 Matte Box system for still cameras attaches to the camera’s tripod socket, rather than the lens. Thus, when you turn the front element of your zoom lens to focus, the EWA K-35 Matte Box will not revolve. It may be used for any lens up to 76-mm exterior diameter. EWA supplies a full line of filters and special-effects devices, measuring about 67×67 mm. It also accepts Cokin, Tiffen Izumar, and other filters. Accessories for slide copying and titling with the EWA K-35 are also available. The shade is adjustable for lenses of various focal length. Lenses may be interchanged without removing the matte box. Prices start at about $149.95. A similar matte box is available for cine and video cameras. For full details, see your photo dealer or contact Pioneer & Co., 216 Haddon Ave., Westmont, N.J. 08108.

Projectaspot masks
$3.95
Want to turn your slide projector into a studio spotlight? This can be done by using odd-shaped masks, such as those offered by Spiratone, Erie, Porter, and Gepe. But Projectaspot masks are made of stiff, heat-resistant insulating material. They will not deform easily in the projector gate. A set of six (used as hairlights), to cast light into a small restricted area or simply to cast a shape on a background or foreground, sells for $3.95, postage prepaid. More information is available from Appleton Associates, P.O. Box 404, Needham, Ma. 02192.

Jena f/5.6 catadioptric (mirror) lens
$2,800
This far-reaching, relatively fast 1,000-mm C.Z. Jena f/5.6 catadioptric (mirror) lens fits practically any 35-mm focal-plane-shutter SLR via “T” adapters. Ready-made adapters are also available for Pentacon 6 and Praktisix 2¼-sq. SLRs. Special fittings can be made for other 2¼-sq. SLRs with focal-plane-shutters. Price is $2,800 complete with adapter and six built-in filters. Write to Exakta Camera Co., 125 Wilbur PI., Bohemia, N.Y. 11716.

The Sima Super FilmShield pouch
$11.95
We agree with Sima that the new high-speed color films (such as Kodacolor VR 1000, 3M 1000 and Tungsten 640) need extra protection against airport X-rays. This is offered by Super FilmShield’s pouches made with a double thickness of lead lamination. Of course, you can also put slower films into these pouches, but the lower-priced regular FilmShield bags are still available, too. Each FilmShield pouch holds 22 rolls of 35-mm film. The Sima Super FilmShield pouch is $11.95. The regular FilmShield is $8.95. See your photo dealer. FilmShield is manufactured by Sima Products Corp., 4001 W. Devon Ave., Chicago, II. 60646.

The Soligor 1.5× teleconverter
$50
The Soligor 1.5× teleconverter requires only one extra stop of exposure while giving you that extra bit of focal length you crave. For example: an 85-mm f/1.4 lens becomes a 127-mm f/2, a 135-mm f/2.8 is converted to a 202-mm f/4, and a 90-mm f/2.8 macro lens to a 135-mm f/4. The Soligor 1.5× teleconverter has three elements, measures only about ⅞ in., weighs about 3.5 oz., and requires only moderate stopping down, even when used with zoom lenses. It's available in mounts for Canon, Konica, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Pen tax K, and Yashica/Contax. Price is $50. Distributor is Soligor Div., AIC Photo, Inc., 168 Glen Cove Rd., Carle Place, N.Y.11514.

Although SLRs are in the computer age, their mirror mechanisms have resisted change despite existing techniques for improvement

Norman Goldberg
Camera evolution may seem to be racing ahead, but one SLR feature seems to resist improvement. This is the mirror, the most significant part of an SLR. Among the major evolutionary steps involving the reflex mirror in the SLR, names such as Exakta, Asahiflex, Pellix, and Contax 137 come to mind.

Eaton S. Lothrop
I really can't let 1983 come to an end without acknowledging the anniversary of an important occasion in photographic history. The status of photography 100 years ago was such that picture making was just emerging from its dark ages—the wet-plate period.

What’s happening in 8-mm video? Berlin fair raises good questions; it’s the answers that are weak
[no value]

Leendert Drukker
Berlin’s biennial electronics fair made it perfectly plain: the manufacturers are racing toward the 8-mm video camera/recorder—in reverse. Company spokesmen treated any query about their plans like poison ivy. As one Blaupunkt official told me bluntly, 8-mm is great mainly for journalists—it gives them something to write about.

Natalie Canavor
Color of the Chemist: The Art and Science of Instant Color Film, images by Don Leavitt. Museum of Science, Boston (May-September; see the traveling schedule at the end of this review). While we tend to think of art and technology as separate, antagonistic spheres, artists are inevitably influenced by technology-both in the kind of work they do and the materials they employ.

New Kodacolor VR Disc Film
Kodak thins emulsion layers, uses new VR technology to improve disk-film grain, gradation, and sharpness
[no value]
[no value]
Bob Schwalberg
New Kodacolor VR disc films are now replacing the original HR 15-shot picture wheels that introduced “decisionfree” photography in the spring of 1982. Principal claims made for the new VR edition are finer grain, improved sharpness, and better contrast through the use of even thinner emulsion layers, better DIR (developer-inhibitor-releasing) couplers, and more finely structured front and back surfaces (which provide something akin to “lubrication” for the rotary disk film transport).

Geoffrey Gove curates the exhibits for Double Exposure (DEX). It is a Greenwich Village gallery that probably enjoys the best attendance figures of all New York photo galleries. The fact that it is in a bank window at the corner of W. 4th St. and Avenue of the Americas helps support this claim.

What—an inexpensive Leica? Well, everything’s relative, but E. Leitz, Inc. is offering a newly minted R4 called the R4S that is stated to cost nearly 48 percent less than the present R4, with a list price of $897 (body only). But, as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and that’s the case here.

It’s always refreshing to see something new inside a camera, especially after curiosity has had time to heighten the anticipation. Mamiya’s ZE offered the promise of much to come, as noted in the Lab Report in the January, 1981 issue. The promise is largely fulfilled by the ZE-X, but there are still some hints of more to come from Mamiya.

Polachrome is not jusi another color-slide film. Comparing it to other color materials, and trying to make it behave like the myriad of today's subtractive color-slide films, can be as futile and impractical as trying to make water colors behave like oil paints.

They look like they were designed by over-the-edge, out-of-control optical engineers—maybe thrill-crazed technicians working deep into the night in subterranean laboratories. The prototypes could have been made from rusty war-surplus bazooka barrels, trimmed down until the length looked about right, and painted black, or maybe white.

Aberrations: A flawlessly manfactured lens may still exhibit residual aberrations (image faults). Next time you push a cart down the supermarket aisle, bear in mind that there are some products that can perform an extra photographic function for you. For starters, why is a bottle of fabric softener shown here? Strangely enough, that Final Touch solution is good for sufficiently removing Spotone spotting dyes from a lot of overspotted black-and-white prints.

Last August we ran an early report on Sony’s combination camera/recorder, its Betamovie. We have now had the opportunity to run it through its paces. As pointed out previously, creative engineering has resulted in a remarkably compact, completely self-contained “camcorder” that is capable of taping up to three hours 20 minutes in the Beta II format on a regular Beta cassette.
