Regarding Arthur Goldsmith’s editorial, “Horizontalitis” (p. 49, July issue), I would like to say that I have fallen into the opposite pathway from what he describes. Well over 75 percent of my portfolio consists of vertical shots. Now I seem to shoot most of my photographs in the vertical position, and it seems almost impossible to shoot a horizontal one.

Alvin Toffler introduced us to the concept of the anxiety created by accelerating technology in his book, Future Shock. In the last decade, we have been swept by a wave of technology that has had tremendous impact on our lives and will dramatically change the way we work.

While the Lab Report elsewhere in this issue contains a detailed strip-down report on the Canon T-50 SLR, I felt that the camera’s potential significance calls for additional comments. So, here they are. Stripping down the T-50 was like opening a gift box, and this camera is a surprise inside.

During the blinding heat of mid-July when this was written, the best way to enjoy photography (aside from underwater shooting) was to read about it—from a chair in the shade, of course. That’s what I’ve been doing, and that’s what I’ll report on in this month’s column.

I once read a science-fiction story in which the ability to read had become a lost art. Instead, people were trained solely by the use of pictures. If they wanted to learn to operate complex machinery, they looked at a television screen that showed explanative pictures.

Olympus introduces fully automatic compact camera
[no value]

Michele A. Frank
My initial reaction to Olympus’ new Quick Flash AFL was that it’s a bit like a grown-up disk. The big difference is that this camera accepts 35-mm film, but in many other respects it offers disk-camera convenience. Tucked within the new AFL are two factory-installed three-volt lithium batteries which, according to Olympus, will permit this new compact camera to recycle its built-in flash in 1.5 sec over the entire life span of the batteries; Olympus is projecting a service life of five years before the batteries will need replacement by a repair station.

In the performing arts, nothing matters but what’s on stage. All the actor owes his audience is a good performance. In photography, all anyone with a camera owes viewers (including critics) is good pictures. Everything else—personality quirks, marital mishaps, mental aberrations—is redundant (although in photography, as in other arts, such details can provide provocative insights).

Beginning with its main body casting, the Canon T-50 is an exercise in cost reduction. The casting is all-plastic except fora metal plate contained within the casting on the bottom, where it serves as the tripod socket and a bolster plate, providing a metal mounting surface for the bottom of the die-cast aluminum mirror box.

Nancy Timmes Engel
There can be no denying that post-World War II America was in love with the movies. But, by no means was it a casual affair. Hollywood moguls quickly realized that although loyal devotees would always purchase tickets religiously, the larger, exploitable audiences required elaborate seductions.

There are many reasons why you might want to process your own color negatives. Of these, speed is probably the most important. In less than one hour you can have dry color negatives, ready to print, instead of waiting days for the negatives to come back from a processing lab.

LENS TEST GLOSSARY
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Aberrations: A flawlessly manfactured lens may still exhibit residual aberrations (image faults). Often, certain aberrations are permitted by the designer to minimize others felt to be more harmful to image quality. Astigmatism: Causes lines radial to the optical axis, and lines perpendicular to these, to focus in two different planes.
