CRITICAL FOCUS

Photography's wacky little trivia are quite often worth saving—even if you sometimes wonder why
[no value]

Kenneth Poli
One of photography's biggest joys is its wide appeal. If your "thing" is sky-diving, you can only step out of a plane, do aerobatics and, with any kind of luck, land safely, ready to do the same thing all over again. Skiers can only ride uphill and glide downhill (hot-doggers excepted), seeking variety only through snow and terrain conditions.

Carl Purcell
As a child of the jet age, I have spent most of my traveling life in the air. Recently, however, I decided to try a different mode of transportation and borrowed a motor home for a family trip to Florida. As a photographer I was interested in the mobility offered by a self-contained living unit on wheels.

Judging from your questions about a camera's inherent time lag (TL) (see our April column), the subject interests many of you. I’ll try to handle all of them in this column. In answer to a popular query, recent measurements of human TL reported on by National Public Radio indicate that the delay between a visual stimulus and the resulting electrical impulse at the brain is 250 mS (¼ second).

Make great portraits of children; all you need are a twin-lens reflex, some lights, and a grandmother
[no value]
[no value]

Norman Rothschild
I made this portrait of a happy, beautiful child nearly 50 years ago, and the techniques I used are applicable today. At that time I was earning money doing “kid(s)napping”—home portraiture of children. My equipment was simple: a Rolleicord twin-lens reflex (TLR) with a Carl Zeiss 75-mm Triotar f/4.5 lens, two No. 2 photoflood bulbs in 12-in. reflectors, a couple of lightweight stands, a tripod, and a light-colored window shade for a background.

I often advise people starting out in color printing to hold off and not buy a color analyzer until they’re comfortable with color and density correction. An analyzer is not a substitute for knowing how to make the necessary color corrections.

Natalie Canavor
Fifteen years ago, Soho—an old section of lower Manhattan south of Greenwich Village—was a ferment of artistic activity. Creators of every media persuasion bought or rented lofts in the cast-iron-facade buildings, then renovated them for studio and living space.

For the person in search of a new camera, one of the most important points to evaluate is the availability and convenience of controls to complement one’s shooting style and needs. In this respect, the FT-1’s design has many excellent features.

This is an improved version of the FS-1. The most noticeable interior improvement is the flexible circuit and its printed-wire ribbons—among the best in today’s cameras. What makes them so good is the thought that went into them: they succeed in eliminating most loose wires and minimize solder connections.

Leendert Drukker
The latest Consumer Electronics Show, held in Chicago, was stolen by the computer crowd; they drew all the headlines and, for the first time in the past few years, video was pushed into the background. Sony, with its BetaMovie, the combined camera/recorder previewed in last month’s issue, didn’t even participate publicly.

You can be a good surgeon, but if nobody lets you operate, you’ll never prove it—and you’ll never improve enough to become a great surgeon. So it is in photography. Many beginning professional photographers are well-grounded in their craft and can do most bread-and-butter assignments with reasonable success.

I always keep my ears open to find out what is on the minds of photographers. What I have been hearing recently is that many people have qualms about “grabbing” pictures of strangers, especially on the street. Some simply feel uncomfortable or uneasy doing this.

Jack Deschin died on June 19 at age 83 and left a void in the photographic community that won’t soon be filled. Most readers of POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY know him best for his monthly “Viewpoint” column on these pages, where he reported on the events and personalities of the photographic cultural scene until only a few issues ago.

Several years ago, I began to look for an inexpensive second camera for non-professional use, particularly for situations in which my expensive SLRs might be damaged. I just couldn’t afford to replace a camera that might be lost or soaked aboard a small sailboat, from which things have a way of falling overboard.

The Contax 137 MA Quartz
$570
Norman Rothschild
The Contax 137 MA Quartz has a built-in winder, yet its body is no larger or heavier than many a manual-wind SLR. Neither is its older brother, the Contax 137 MD Quartz, but there are some interesting differences. For example, the newcomer adds manual shutter speeds, and its winder can operate at three instead of two frames per sec.

David Vestal
Don’t mount prints until you have to, because it takes more labor, uses more storage space, and costs more than leaving them unmounted. You seldom need to mount prints except when you exhibit or sell them. Still, it helps to know how to mount them in a way that looks good and won’t harm them.

SLR-camera modules
Leitz Independent Photo Group offers two automatic, dedicated-flash units operable with interchangeable SLR-camera modules. green LED
Head can be swiveled horizontally through 348° in either direction and tilted upward at five click-stopped positions through 120°. A green LED indicates whether flash was bright enough to cover the subject. Powered by four AA cells, Vario-Computer circuit should produce between 130 to 1,250 flashes at recycle intervals of 8 to 1/2 sec.
Photo Historica, Ltd.
Vario-Power control
$123
Vario-Power control reduces power to 1/64 normal output for close-ups, provides faster recycling with autowinders, and permits flash duration of 1/15,000 sec. ASA guide number is 106. Price, $123.
Photo Historica, Ltd.
Braun 340M SCA
It accepts an add-on filter kit (color conversion, multicolored, and wide-angle diffusing screens). Slightly larger and more powerful, Braun 340M SCA is somewhat similar to the 320 SCA. It features a Vario-Zoom reflector that adjusts to cover areas of 28-, 45-, and 100-mm lenses. Bouncelighting is expanded by a beam-splitting Light Diffusing Disc on the reflector head which, when set at 60° mark, flips Disc upward. This allows most of the light to pass through for bounce while remaining portion is reflected.
Photo Historica, Ltd.
Green LED bounce
$174
Large scales on the back indicate mode and distance settings with the Vario-Distance limits set off by a pair of LEDs. Green LED bounce confirmation is augmented by a simultaneous, audible beep. ISO 100 guide number is 112. Price, $174.
Photo Historica, Ltd.

Sliding scales on this 6.5-oz. unit indicate guide number for subject distance and film-speed combination. If desired, a reflector can be turned off; filters can be placed over one or both. Price, $112.50. DIST.: L.I.P.G., E. Leitz Inc., 24 Link Dr., Rockleigh, N.J. 07647.
