In Bob Schwalberg’s May-issue article, “All about Teleconverters,” he states that “lenses and teleconverters have so-called nodal points from which optical distances are measured.” This statement is not entirely correct. Classically, optical distances are measured from the primary and secondary principal planes of an optical system or lens.

Probably one of the last places in the world a photographer would choose for a vacation is the Sinai Peninsula, that vast expanse of desert waste protruding down into the Red Sea. It is a piece of real estate that has been hotly disputed in the last decade and is now interlaced with fortifications and abandoned mine fields.

Eaton S. Lothrop
Earlier this year I was watching an old spy movie on television in which one of the agents took out a cigarette lighter. He opened the base of it to reveal a camera, with which he proceeded to copy some important documents. And that reminded me of a category of concealed cameras that I hadn’t yet discussed in this column, although I have mentioned some “detective” cameras from time to time.

Most of us are familiar with the pioneering roles played by Jacob Riis and Lewis W. Hine in the utilization of photoreportage to awaken the public’s conscience and consciousness. Riis’ 1890 classic, How the Other Half Lives, was largely responsible for turn-of-the-century legislation against the horrendous living conditions in the slums of New York.

A compact 35-mm camera that autoloads, autowinds, autorewinds, autofocuses, auto-exposes, and even voices reminders has been introduced by Minolta. Leaving little risk of error, the “Talker” tells the absent-minded user if the camera is empty to “load film”; under dim conditions, “too dark, use flash”; and if the subject appears too far for proper flash exposure, to “check distance.”

I was recently accused of naiveté, being “holier than thou” about the state of photojournalism, being intolerant of superficiality just when successful magazines are embracing it. These comments came just a few hours after I made a talk at the NPPA Northern Short Course in Buck Hill Falls, Pa.

Film-format popularity seems to run in cycles of about a decade. For example, the 126 format was introduced in 1963, followed nine years later by 110, which was supplanted in 1982 by the disk. Clearly, the trend is toward smaller and smaller sizes for mass-market amateur films.

The Olympus OM-G (and its companion model OM-F, with built-in electronic focusing aid) has all the electronic wizardry needed to simplify picture-taking and avoid technically poor results under most lighting conditions. Most of the levers and buttons that can make the use of an SLR confusing for the first-time user have been eliminated, while often-used features (such as the auto-exposure override) are designed for easy use.

If glass-fiber-filled polycarbonate, a tough engineering plastic, were suddenly outlawed, dozens of camera models would not exist. Among them would be the Olympus OM-G, and the OM-10 from which it sprang. The OM-G picks up where the OM-10 left off, with its widespread use of polycarbonate, including the topand bottom-cover panels, front cowl, control knobs, and a good share of the internal parts.

I photographed for many years before I made a “real” image. Like many beginning photographers, I would look at something, but not truly see it. The subject would evoke feelings in me, based on past experiences. Then I would take, develop, and print the picture, which would recall to my mind the same emotions.

Video arcades are popping up like mushrooms. From a casual study, I find that there are two preferred locations: in any shopping mall and near any school. I confess to having been inside one, strictly out of professional curiosity. My first impression was indelible—an overpowering odor of rubber-and-canvas shoes that deserved burning.

Suppose I were to tell you that there had just been a breakthrough in optical design and that you could now buy a truly universal lens for your camera? You could sell all of your other lenses because this lens would be the only one you would ever have to own, even if you changed to a different brand of camera.

In the interest of consistency with our comments about the Bronica ETR, to which the Bronica SQ-A was likened in our May-issue "Lab Report" (p. 61), the "seal against dirt" provision for the SQA should have read "fair/good" instead of "fair/poor."

The new Mamiya ZM’s sleek contours make it, of all the Z-series cameras, the most comfortable to handle. The built-in handgrip and large-sized controls make it easy to use, even while wearing gloves and shooting on a wintry 20-degree day. For such a diminutive camera, it packs a lot of features.

As Quantaray’s flagship camera, the RZ 800 offers the most features in the line, and it handles quite well. One of its appeals is that it uses the K-mount lens system. A distinguishing feature is the top-mounted push-button control panel. It simplifies, electronically, exposure-time selection.

Are you a darkroom slob? Check these points to find out if your printing habits need changing

Cora Wright Kennedy
I’m always surprised at how many black-and-white darkroom workers are really photographic slobs. These people may be quite neat in every other way, but when it comes to printing, their bad habits tend to raise hob with picture results. They may mess up the enlarger, track chemicals on the floor, spill solutions over work areas, stain their clothes, or even damage important negatives.
