The TV screen is where the action is and, until recently, this left the traditional picture media—films, slides, even prints—out in left field. It is all too easy to let them accumulate, unsorted and inaccessible, in closets and drawers.

Sometimes, if you can’t build a better mousetrap to get the world to beat a path to your door, you can try painting it a different color or tying a bow around it to increase sales. Packaging is important to marketing. The “look” of a camera is one consideration in packaging.

Shootout on Prince Edward Island
Ten photographers have a friendly picture-taking war in Canada’s smallest province

Carl Purcell
I hate to admit it, but I have an abysmal ignorance about Canada. My only contacts with our neighbor to the north had been a fishing trip when I was 12 years old and a quick hop across the border to escape the commercial blight of Niagara Falls. When I received the invitation to participate in a “shootout” on Prince Edward Island, in the Gulf of,St. Lawrence, I was intrigued enough to accept, but the images that came to my mind were those of the Canadian woods and bearded men in red plaid shirts with hunting knives and deer rifles.

Camera repair: the photographer’s dilemma

Carl Purcell
The internal workings of the modern camera are a mystery to most of us. When things go wrong, we take our prized cameras to the repair shop and are often shocked when we get the bill. We regard the camera technician with ambivalent feelings: as a high priest of optical and electronic technology, and sometimes as a crook and charlatan.

What are windows for? To allow light in, or people to look out? (In the case of movie houses, neither—that’s why they have no windows!) Voyeurs peek into windows and would-be suicides jump from them if they feel they’ve got to go in a hurry. Barred windows keep prisoners in and outsiders out.

Bob Schwalberg
3M’s new Color Slide 1000 Daylight is the world’s fastest positive color-transparency film and, in terms of its effective pushability to ISO 4,000, the world’s fastest 35-mm film of any sort. Like its famous three-year-old 3M stablemate, Color Slide 640-T, pacesetter of the tungsten-balanced set, this new availablelight-speed film combines truly beautiful color with very good sharpness and reasonably moderate grain.

Don Leavitt
Ever since the invention of color-transparency film for 35-mm cameras in the mid-1930s, photographers have had a powerful yearning to see their slides immediately. Even Dr. Edwin Land’s invention of instant photography in 1947 did not bring that desire any closer to fruition.

Prairie Fires and Paper Moons is a nostalgic, humorous, and touching history of the American photographic postcard in the years of its heyday, 1900 to 1920. Its authors, Hal Morgan and Andreas Brown, have drawn material from private collections (including their own) and from the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Burdick Collection to produce a unique volume of photographic history.

An explosion of dedicated units from independent makers, but precious little innovation

Michele A. Frank
At this year’s PMA show, it would have taken someone with an active imagination to perceive anything significant or innovative in the category of electronic-flash units. The predicted explosion of dedicated-flash units from independent manufacturers happened, and they came on all levels of sophistication, including those employing interchangeable modules, one-piece units that could be used on more than one camera, and others that would only work with a particular brand of camera.

After a long absence of new half-frame 35-mm models, Ansco has introduced the Mark 35, which looks much like a disk camera, but makes 72 18×24-mm exposures on a 36-exposure roll. Five recession months past photokina ’82, the 1983 Las Vegas PMA floor show turned up more surprises than a railroad timetable. Famous-name international view-camera companies, having at least momentarily perfected photography, saw no need to introduce new models at this time, and almost all of the new lenses were photokina catch-ups now reaching our shores.

Color theory is something you should learn after you’ve made your first color print and decide to make better ones

Larry Sribnick
You don’t have to know very much about color theory to make your first successful color prints. Today’s materials make it possible to take a strict “cookbook” approach to color printing and do it by the numbers. However, when you want to go beyond straight printing and start to exercise more precise control over your results, you’ll want to have a better idea of what takes place during the exposure of a color print.

Lisette Model died in New York on March 29. She had been having trouble breathing but insisted she was not sick. She fought her own fights, and lost this one. Her husband, the painter Evsa Model, had died in 1976. Her sister, Olga Seybert, survives her.

Surprisingly, there were some accessories previously unreported on at this PMA “spectacular.” The Nikon MF-16 LCD databack for FE2 and FM2 SLRs has three digital-display modes printable on Film at the user’s option. Internal synch permits mating to an MD-12 motor drive and using the terminal on front of the camera for nonshoe-mount flash.

In the instant-photography field, no new products were shown, but the trend toward consolidation and refinement was evident. Of special interest to visitors at the PMA show were four products: Vivitar’s Instant Slide Printer, Polaroid’s Polachrome instant color-slide film, Agfa-Gevaert’s Agfachrome-Speed instant color-enlarging paper, and Newton Plastic’s ProBack by Forscher.

Flat broke in the winter of 1980, behind in his rent, indebted by a business venture, Martin Schreiber regarded the world bleakly from his vantage point at a table in New York’s Lone Star Cafe. At that moment, his photographic career was unstructured, unfocused, unsuccessful, and unremunerative.

Many years ago, my first journalism class was treated to an informal talk by a local newspaper reporter. I really can’t remember much of what he said, but I do remember something he showed us. It was a threadmount Leica camera with collapsible 50-mm lens, which he wore in a holster slung under his coat.

One of the earliest camera features is the adjustable lens opening. And it represents a major problem to many camera makers. Consider how most of today’s popular SLRs began. They had no built-in meters or other need for a battery; their shutters were governed mechanically.

One of photography’s earliest commercial uses was the study of the naked—usually female—human form. For the painter and sculptor, such images were a convenient and economical substitute for a live model. Of course, humankind being what it is, these images (and others more sexually explicit) soon became a socially and physically discrete solution for a somewhat more lascivious goal.

I have had a stroke, and my left hand and arm are not very strong yet. What should I use to hold the camera while I focus with my right hand? Tripods are not very satisfactory. S.J. Krenzer, Los Angeles, Ca. We have three special suggestions. First, use a lightto medium-weight tripod featuring a pan handle, where you loosen a grip on the handle to change the camera angle, and tighten it so the camera position is secured.

This is a technique in picture-making that depends on accidents. It works for 35-mm cameras, and it’s very easy to do. You simply shoot a roll of film, making no attempt whatever to remember your shots, then rewind the film and shoot another set of pictures on it.

Agfa’s Compact is a pocketable, streamlined 35-mm camera that invariably draws the description “cute.” One reason, undoubtedly, is that as you press its large front slide, the protective lens cover is withdrawn, and the lens itself is driven forward.
