In your August issue, I found a short piece about the American photographer Bill Owens (“Pop Photo Snapshots,” p. 66). Let me add some Estonian cities to the list of exhibition places of Owens’ book: In August/September, Suburbia was exhibited in the Museum of Rakvere (a city in northern Estonia), and future exhibitions were planned in other towns in Estonia (Paide, Viljandi, Haapsalu).

Kenneth Poli
Are photographers an endangered species? Quite possibly, I think. Each photokina brings on more technological wonders that make picture-taking ever easier. Built-in “intelligence” controls camera functions automatically. It beeps or blinks warnings when light is too low or too high for the camera settings.

A look at three slide printers, and a handful of other gadgets useful to the travel photographer
BOOKS IN BRIEF

Carl Purcell
As a travel photographer I use color-slide film almost exclusively. It is the type of film preferred by magazines and publishers for color reproduction, and my files now contain many thousands of color slides from 76 countries. Recently, I discovered a device that makes instant color prints from my slides, saving me hours of inconvenient trips back and forth between my house and the camera store.

Techniques for preventing winter blues, and how to correct them if you have them
[no value]

[no value]
Larry Sribnick
Winter color photography can be very rewarding, but it often results in a blue cast in the shadows, particularly in snow and ice scenes. The “blues” are caused by a combination of UV (ultraviolet) radiation and the reflection of the clear blue sky (it’s really cyan!) on the white snow.

Slides driving you crazy? Try this sane, pleasant way to file and show your 35-mm transparencies

Cora Wright Kennedy
It’s a sad fact that many photographers lack a good system of storing slides for easy access and return. Some just sit around, waiting for a pie-in-the-sky computerized approach that will solve all of their problems. However, others keep searching for a manual system that will make the whole business of finding the right slides, then showing them and refiling them, more of a delight and less of a pain in the neck.

Polaroid’s new Polachrome film for 35-mm cameras is a technological wonder to me. I first heard about it last summer while touring the Japanese photo industry. Polaroid had made an advanced disclosure to some camera makers, complete with a slide show of images exposed and processed minutes before.

Chicago’s State Street, like New York’s Park Avenue, slices an urban cross-section from uptown to downtown: classy condominiums, skyscrapers, middleclass housing projects, and shabby storefronts. Although the facades are familiar, most of the interiors—from bedroom to boardroom—are terra incognita.

Imaging: Materials & Processes
Sensitized materials— silver-based and electronic—from Kodak, Polaroid, Agfa-Gevaert, and Fuji highlighted the show

Don Leavitt
It seems that most of the news at this year’s photokina was in the area of sensitized goods—both silver-based and electronic. In a surprising move, Eastman Kodak Co., which has rarely introduced a product at this show before, announced their new ASA 1,000 color-negative film.

Arthur Goldsmith
The scant supply of early samples of Kodak’s Kodacolor VR 1000 was greedily snapped up by members of the photographic press who were able to get their hands on it, and were worth their weight in Krugerrands during photokina ’82. In thinking how best to check out the limited quantity I was able to con, I decided to combine it with one of the show’s most impressive lenses: the 85-mm Planar f/1.2 (yes, f/1.2), made by Zeiss for Yashica/Contax.

Norman Rothschild
For years I've been a victim of my own prejudice against the Kodak 140 Carousel slide tray, a prejudice based more on emotion than on careful examination of pertinent facts in the case. I'd always hoped to be able to edit out 20 slides from some of my two 80-slide-tray slide talks and use just one 140-slide tray.

About 30 years ago I applied for a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard. The prospect of a nine-months’ sabbatical from my work at Black Star to enhance my journalistic skills was most appealing. I came close. But it was a time when Nieman preferences went to newspaper journalists.

In our December-issue article, “How They Work: 3 Master Printers and Their Assistants,” the names of Jim Bones’ predecessors were misspelled. They were George Fick (not Fisk) and David Rathbun (not Rathbone). Also, the quote, “After all, beauty is something too,” attributed to Jim Bones, was actually made by Eliot Porter.

Weather permitting, which wasn’t often, the Fuji blimp soared low over Cologne, Germany, serenely aimless in contrast to the focused frenzy going on below on both sides of the Rhine. The 17th photokina international photographic trade fair and cultural extravaganza (Oct. 6-12, 1982) was like old times for veterans of the biannual event.

Don’t turn your nose up at 35-mm compact cameras. Many, of course, are simple instruments for the snapshooter interested in photographs rather than photography. But remember that many of the new tricks found in the more glamorous SLR category, such as autofocusing, built-in motor wind, and rewind, were tried out first on 35-mm compacts.

Leendert Drukker
Photokina indicated three significant developments: one, continued compacting of video gear, as exemplified by a Konica camera that's virtually a subminiature, and the promise of high-density tapes from Fuji; two, the translation of film to TV, as dramatically demonstrated by Kodak with its still disk; and three, the unabated introduction of new super 8 equipment, despite a sluggish market.

Accessories
For devoted gadgeteers, there were macro flash brackets, versatile camera supports, slide duplicators, and auxiliary lens sets

Joseph P. Fesce
With the trend more toward chemical products (print materials and film) rather than hardware, there were not many new accessories. This excludes major products that are part of camera systems and are described elsewhere in our photokina '82 coverage, or have already appeared.

Exposure Meters
From Bron and Bowens came three new flash meters, while Gossen showed a new Lunasix 3

Michele A. Frank
Three new flash meters appeared at photokina. All would have to be put in the professional class, although Bron stated that its LCD-display Broncolor FM would also be an ideal choice for amateurs. Displaying apertures from f/1 to f/90-and-2/3 (i.e. f/117) in 1/3 f-stop increments, Bron claims an accuracy of ±1/6 EV over a film-speed range of 25 to 800.

Pro Gear
There were no revolutions but solid evolution of large-format gear from Linhof, Sinar, Horseman, Arca Swiss, and others
[no value]

Bob Schwalberg
The windings and twistings of technical progress took no revolutionary paths in the large-format field, and most of the genuinely new pieces of hardware present at photokina ’82 offer a strong argument in favor of Darwinian gradualism.

A JOURNEY INTO COLOR
In Ashvin Gatha’s India, colors, both bright and subtle, do more than simply please the eye: they have meaning and emotion as well
[no value]

Kenneth Poli
Ashvin Gatha first appeared in POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY’S offices in 1970—a tall young man, ebullient and mustachioed and given to wearing brightly colored suits. His haberdashery turned out to be an introduction to Gatha’s stock in trade—a mastery of brilliant color that infused his work and caused us to publish a portfolio of it straight off.

FLOWERS BY FLASH
For Gasho Yamamura, flowers are special friends. Here’s his method for maximizing their color and character

I have long been absorbed by the lure of the vegetable kingdom. I am especially attracted by the beauty of tropical flowers with their brilliant coloration. Even among the flowers popular in Japan from olden times it is the exotic naturalized plants that make the strongest impression on my mind.

Black-and-white prints regenerated into color? That’s nothing new if you’re acquainted with toning and printing procedures. But Sabattier effect and posterizations in color produced chemically? That sounds like a fantasy of someone, like me, who’d like to create surreal color images but doesn’t want to do color printing.
