Photography intends to be ready for the future despite occasional contemporary fears that there may not be one. Or, so I would judge from the attendance at, and interest in, last September’s symposium on The Stability and Preservation of Photographic Images.

Yvonne Kalmus
Paul Strand is generally acknowledged to be one of America’s master photographers and cited as the force which first established the esthetic value of the unmanipulated, unaltered photographic image as a valid artistic creation. What may be more remarkable is his diversity of photographic experience (both still and motion picture), subject matter (portraits, close-ups of nature and landscapes), and the fact that, once established, his personal esthetic never wavered during a career that spanned more than half a century.

Closed editorial doors that keep out talented photographers can also keep publications from growing

Howard Chapnick
For years I have been plied with sad stories by frustrated photographers who have tried to penetrate the barriers erected against them when seeking assignments. And I find it difficult to understand. Why would creative people responsible for producing a quality magazine, advertisement, annual report, or photographic collection avoid consideration of potential talent?

Should you buy a color analyzer before or after you learn how to print color?

Larry Sribnick
For many people getting started in color printing, the most wanted, feared, and misunderstood piece of equipment is the color analyzer. Too many beginners think that if they just buy a color analyzer, they won’t have to learn all of the techniques of exposure and color correction.

Photographica fairs vary as much as the things they buy/swap/sell
[no value]

Eaton S. Lothrop
Earlier this year I was debating which photographic trade-fair/swap-shows to attend this fall. There are so many now, that attending all of them could be expensive—even without buying items to add to a collection. For the uninitiated, a photographica trade fair is an event that can seem like something between an indoor antique show and a rummage sale.

Photo essays for young readers: a new market for photographers

Yvonne Kalmus
Over the past year or so, the words "photographs by" have begun to appear more and more often in listings of books for children. Of course, "illustrated by" or "pictures by" still carries the day, but unless specifically noted as photographs, a book’s illustrations will usually be some form of drawing or painting.

An era ended on August 13,1982. That’s when a letter from E. Leitz, Inc. to its dealers advised them, with regret, that Leitz has discontinued production and supply of all parts for screw-mount cameras, lenses, and accessories. So, Leitz, in this country will no longer accept screwmount equipment for repair.

I'm in a dilemma. Every time I send off bracketed exposures of a scene, the color prints I get back don't include some slightly overexposed and underexposed prints, as you might expect. Instead they come back identical, due no doubt to automation of the equipment that determines the exposure for each jumbo print.

The role of darkroom assistant can be a rewarding experience, but has its psychological perils. Here’s an intimate look at three case histories

This article is about three well-known photographers: Eliot Porter, Paul Caponigro, and Laura Gilpin: and three younger photographers who have been their assistants: Jim Bones, Warren Hanford, and Mary Peck. All live in Santa Fe (Laura Gilpin lived there until her death in 1979), a community that has attracted numerous photographers for its unhurried life-style and spectacular surroundings.

Santa Fe seems to attract photographers for a number of reasons. In addition to the New Mexico landscape and the particular quality of light, Santa Fe offers a kind of pleasant remoteness that is especially conducive to artistic endeavor.

Laura Gilpin was much loved in Santa Fe. All who knew her describe her as warm and friendly and one who loved to talk. "She especially loved to talk to young people,” says Anne Noggle, photographer, former curator of photography at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe, and a lifelong friend of Gilpin’s.

Eliot Porter, one of the best-known color photographers in America, is a scientist. Although his lovely, lyrical views of nature reveal a poetry in his vision, his working methods are rigorously scientific. It is obvious from his studio: he keeps meticulous records of every exposure, and every print is carefully filed in metal cabinets and noted in lab books.

HOW TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Norman Rothschild
Have you ever wondered why mirror lenses render out-of-focus highlights (reflections on water, street lights, and the like) as annular rings, i.e., “doughnuts" of light with a dark center? Or why conventional lenses, which ordinarily render these as round blobs, sometimes give them hexagonal or other geometric shapes?

Two new 6×9-cm (2¼×3¼-in.) Fujica Professional rangefinder-focusing 120/220 roll-film cameras are currently being marketed in Japan, with no present plans for export to the U.S. Some of these “Texas Leicas” are, however, reaching our shores completely honorably, albeit unofficially, through direct import by enterprising American photo retailers.

The Flip-It VHR-II camera bracket is a novel response to the limitations and clumsiness of the standard-size flash unit mounted into the camera’s hot-shoe. Direct on-axis flash lighting tends to produce the red-eye effect, resulting from light bouncing off the retina when the subject faces the camera.

In these days of electronic bells and whistles, the Nikon FM2 is a refreshingly mechanical, no-nonsense, professional-grade camera that can take the abuse of everyday use. Only the exposure-metering system is powered by the batteries, so if they fail, the rest of the camera continues to work normally.

Aberrations: A flawlessly manufactured lens may still exhibit residual aberrations (image faults). Often, certain aberrations are permitted by the designer to minimize others felt to be more harmful to image quality. Astigmatism: Causes lines radial to the optical axis, and lines perpendicular to these, to focus in two different planes.

Five years ago, in November 1977, our Lab Report on the Nikon FM was published. Comparing the new with the old is unavoidable, but this can be done quickly, because the FM2 is not simply a warmed-over FM with a faster shutter. Its FM heritage is clear: die-cast aluminum main body, chromed-brass top and bottom cover panels, plastic front cowl, mechanical shutter, LED readout, and simple, neat design and construction.
