I was reading your March-issue feature, “Jill Freedman: Street Cops,” when I was confronted with a statement she made which has left me quite troubled. There was a photograph of a young girl (on p. 101), obviously on some drug, being lifted from the ground by two police officers.

What you should know about the care and feeding of photographic filters
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Norman Rothschild
Filters, when used properly, can esthetically add to your images. They can, in many cases, turn an ordinary image into an outstanding one. Used improperly, they can cause technical errors that will seriously mar your images. Most lenses do not account for the use of a filter in the designers’ optical calculations.

Norman Goldberg
While printing some black-and-white negatives the other night, I was having trouble. The negatives looked fine, my developer was fresh, properly diluted, and at the right temperature. But the prints looked muddy. I couldn’t get a clean-looking white or rich black, and the muddy whites were more noticeable at one side of the print than the other. I removed the enlarging lens and played the beam of a penlight through it while looking through the opposite end.

Photography is probably the greatest tool for visual recording and cataloging ever invented. That fact is sometimes obscured by artistic aspirations that lead photographers to mark on, manipulate, or otherwise embellish their prints.

Don Leavitt
Last spring, Polaroid introduced its Sun line of instant cameras. This new generation of instant cameras features automatic fillflash with every picture. Since the flash fires every time, pictures can be taken in any kind of light—both indoors and out, including under very cloudy skies, or in situations with very harsh shadows falling on the subject.

When Lawrence Gartel was 5, his mother took him to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City to view exhibits of the painters Claude Monet and Paul Klee. He looked up at his mother and said, “My work is better. My work should hang here.” At 25, Gartel is cocky, brash, arrogant, self-assured, rebellious, opinionated, and convinced that he is breaking new ground in photography.

Why you shouldn’t let temperature control stop you from processing your own color films and prints

Larry Sribnick
Precise temperature control is often the biggest concern of anyone new to color-darkroom work. In fact, it’s probably the single factor that keeps most people from trying color processing. How do you control processing temperatures to ±.28 C (0.5F)? You can’t, so don’t worry about doing it!

Many of us want to make extra money. Selling (actually renting) photographic images is one way photographers do it, so it might be worth trying. Rather than put down the many bad books on the subject of how to sell your pictures, I’ll tell you about a recent one that looks pretty good.

Ed Farber
Six-volt batteries, as originally conceived for modern electronic cameras, were of the silver-oxide anode style, with a zinc cathode and potassium-hydroxide electrolyte. They serve well, having a flat discharge characteristic, good shelf life, and good low-temperature performance with most cameras.

Cora Wright Kennedy
If you’ve ever experienced a real water shortage, you are not likely to take your water supply for granted again. There is something fundamentally shaking about the lack of this essential commodity, even for a short while. This column is the promised follow-up to the one in our December, 1981, issue, which dealt with saving water by using brief soak washes for 8x 10-in.

Eaton S. Lothrop
Following months of curiosity and speculation within the photographic industry, Eastman Kodak Co. announced last February a product they feel is their most significant since the Instamatic camera line introduced in 1963. This is the Kodak Disc camera, one whose 15 exposures are made on a flat disk-like piece of film.

Some early users have complained about the difficulties of handling Kodak’s new Disc cameras for vertical shots. Quite often, one’s fingers cover part of the flash, limiting its light output. It’s also easy to inadvertently hold the vertical camera upside down, producing “ghoulish” bottom-lighted flash pictures.

A new generation of telephoto lens is as fast as the standard 50-mm optic, and in some ways even easier to handle. Longer focus makes for tight, format-filling composition, particularly important for color-slide impact. High speed, with apertures from f/2 to f/1.2, opens new avenues in available light, with more accurate SLR focusing and superior optical correction.

Imagine yourself as a 19th-century Indian photographer to whom a newly rich merchant who loved music said, “Take my picture.” How would you do it? You would have photographed him holding an instrument, then painted over the print with rich brilliant colors, just as in the picture on the left.

Eric Staller begins this interview reluctantly. He really doesn't want to talk about how he makes his pictures. People often get it wrong. “One reporter conducted the interview by phone," he said, as soon as we Sat down. “She asked me what camera I used; I said ‘Leicaflex'; she wrote ‘Light Deflects.’ This was before I switched to the Nikon for its double-exposure capability.” But mostly, Staller objects to interviews that overemphasize production and minimize ideas.

Watching the image on the focusing screen of my SLR as I zoomed the 50 → 250-mm Tokina/AT-X f/4/5.6 from wide-angle all the way to its 5X telephoto, it felt as though I were looking at early zoom movies of sports. A ratio of five to one is sensational, but what can this do for you outside of precise composition and the usual spiel about endless continuity of image size?
