I read with interest Bob Schwalberg’s informative article on stability of photographic materials [“Color Preservation Update,” January issue]. That article and Cora Wright Kennedy’s excellent “Tools and Techniques” column in the same issue suggest fixing black-and-white fiber-base prints for 30 seconds or so in a film-strength, nonhardening ammonium-thiosulfate fixer such as Kodak Rapid Fix.

Until the 1970s only fiber-base papers were available in black-and-white. There were no resin-coated (RC) papers, and the term “fiber base” was not used: the distinction it stands for didn’t exist. The language for this distinction hasn’t settled down yet: “paper base,” “baryta base,” and sometimes just “baryta” are all used for the same thing as “fiber base”: traditional nonwater-proof photographic paper. I’ll call it FB for short.

The ’82 PMA harvest of 35-mm compact cameras is no bumper crop, although this kind of camera seems to be increasingly popular with beginning photographers. Old SLR hands (myself included) also use them as second, or Saturday-go-to-party cameras.

The camera manufacturers may be preparing to get into video, but you would never have guessed it from this show. All expectations to the contrary, there wasn't a single new video camera or recorder at the show. Technicolor displayed its jointly mounted camera and recorder (see my CES report in “Video/Movie Methods,” last month’s issue) and its one-hour and 2½-hour cassettes for its ¼in. CVC system.

Here is a photograph of my current license plate [shown]. It is an excellent way to meet other photographers while traveling. It has also given rise to some interesting questions as nonphotographers speculate on its meaning. All-in-all, it has proven to be worth the moderate investment with the local government office to reserve it.

In our “First Look” at the 70→210-mm Kiron f/4 close-focusing zoom lens (March issue), the “Zoom Lock” feature was incompletely described. This sliding switch can be used to “freeze” the lens’ zooming mechanism at any focal length, including those marked and all intermediate positions.
