David Vestal, one of my favorite photographic writers, has broken my heart! His excellent article, “How to Plan and Build a Home Darkroom” (January issue), would have been perfect were it not for an inexplicable lapse in not mentioning enlarging easels.

8-mm video cameras are coming
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Arthur Goldsmith
Lack of industry-accepted standards has handicapped the growth of video electronics systems for nearly two decades, and although the electronic-imaging boom is fast upon us, we’re not out of the woods yet. During my recent visit to Tokyo, a noteworthy event was the announcement that five giant electronics firms had agreed on a joint proposal for a new video-cassette format for compact 8-mm-style video cameras with built-in videotape recorders.

Kenneth Poli
Friends, roamers, countrymen, lend me your eyes. I come to praise 110, however, not to bury it—although the newly announced Kodak disk-film-and-camera system will probably do just that eventually. If the disk lives up to speculations about it, the new format should become king of the snapshot hill.

TIME EXPOSURE

The fight against bulk and weight in cameras has been under way since the beginning of photography
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Eaton S. Lothrop
My column that pointed out an error in Konica’s dating of the Pear.lette shown in their recent ads (“Time Exposure,” December 1981) drew a comment to which I would like to respond. A reader wrote, “In a world overly burdened with damned-if-you-do-and-damned-if-you-don’t, is it too much to suggest your readers might prefer more of the informative and useful ‘Time Exposure’ copy we’re accustomed to enjoying and less I’m-so-much-smarter-than-they-are nasty nitpicking? I don’t believe the latter is especially worthy of you.”

Howard Chapnick
I never read classified want ads or personal notices. Well, hardly ever. A few months back, my wife subscribed to a neighborhood New York newspaper, The East Side Express. Gary Schoichet’s personal notice reproduced above piqued my curiosity, so I telephoned him—not to offer my nude body, but in the hope of perhaps developing a column.

How to spend very little money to convert your black-and-white darkroom into a color one
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Larry Sribnick
It’s true that you could easily spend over $1,000 converting a black-and-white darkroom to a color one. The real question is, do you have to spend that much? Are a dichroic color head, thermostatically controlled water supply, and a color analyzer really necessary? No, they are not.

Can You Develop and Print Kodak Disc Film in Your Home Darkroom ?
Yes, indeed, if you have the right-size pencil and an electric drill. For best prints you’ll also need a very bright diffusion enlarger
[no value]
[no value]
Bob Schwalberg
Walter Johnson
Souping your own Kodacolor HR Disc films calls for one standard Kodak Flexicolor (C-41) processing kit, a suitably sized plastic pencil to jam into the disk hub, and an electric drill. The pencil is your processing rod, which Walter Johnson kept twirling throughout the standard 3¼-minute development, changing direction to avoid potential flow marks.

Imagine that you’re a research scientist who has just been given the following assignment: design a mass-marketpriced camera/film system that: 1) is truly lightweight and pocket size; 2) requires absolutely no user decision-making other than selecting the scene and pressing the button; 3) requires no other user action besides loading and unloading the film, and taking the picture; and 4) that will produce good pictures in virtually any lighting situation.

Larry Sribnick
In late June or early July, the Omega division of Berkey Marketing will start to ship to dealers an enlarger that represents a total departure from anything they’ve previously done, the Omega D 5500. This enlarger is an attempt to build into a single unit everything necessary for a truly “state-of-the-art” enlarger while retaining a competitive price.
