I was much interested in Bob Schwalberg's article on the new Ilford XP-1 film (September issue, POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY). I am always interested in progress, and this film appears to have an almost "fail-safe" character. I have the greatest respect for Ilford, and I hope that I shall be able to experiment with the film soon.

One mark of a true world's fair, aside from its international composition, is that it attempts to express something about the cultural consequences of the technology displayed. It is more than just a collection of new products and a shopping mall for potential buyers.

With few exceptions, this year’s innovations at photokina struck this curmudgeon more as minor bulges than breakthroughs. The technological wonders continue to roll out of the laboratories, and the equipment gets smarter and easier to use with each photo show.

Keeping up with technical changes calls for a transphasorized crystal ball

We are in a field that embraces technologies that are bursting at the seams with change. Keeping up with only the major ones has proven to be a full-time job. And it’s guaranteed to be intellectually frustrating because, in most instances, we have to be satisfied with digest-style news.

A tantalizing, and enviable, look back recently came to my desk in the form of a fan letter with early reminiscence from Ralph Steiner—photographer, filmmaker, writer, and teacher—who once had a chance to buy a set of Camera Work for $150 and turned it down.

Why I like to shoot with autowinders—either the accessory or built-in kind
Recently published books:

Norman Rothschild
When autowinders for 35-mm cameras first appeared, my main thoughts were about how many useless exposures would be made because of the ease of operation. My extensive experience with a Konica FS-1 and Contax 137 with their built-in winders, as well as with some cameras with attachable units, has taught me different.

Go exploring in the nonglossy RC black-and-white paper field
Author's favorite nonglossy black-and-white RC papers

Cora Wright Kennedy
In case you haven’t looked at the resincoated (RC) black-and-white enlarging-paper field as a whole, there’s a great deal to choose from. Expectedly, growth has shown up most in the area of nonglossy papers. And though no one has yet given us an RC equivalent of a fiber-base, matte-dried glossy surface, there certainly are some interesting nonglossy RC papers.

Strict-constructionist camera historians find advertising fraught with poetic license

Eaton S. Lothrop
When I was in high school, I didn’t really enjoy the required course in American History. So (perhaps a bit immaturely), I didn’t do very well in it. In college I enjoyed my limited (required) foray into that field a little bit more. I’m sure that that was because I had chosen the one course that I took, History of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era.

Max Yavno, G. Ray Hawkins Gallery, Los Angeles (Aug. 5-30). Born in New York in 1921, Max Yavno worked his way through college and several years of graduate study in the social sciences; photographically he was self-taught. In the 1940s he became a photographer for the Works Progress Administration and also in that decade acted as president of the controversial, politically radical Photo League; and served as a photo instructor in the U.S. Army.

Wilderness photography: the market’s not as big as—uh—all outdoors, but the potential is good
BOOK REVIEW IN BRIEF
[no value]
[no value]
Howard Chapnick
I recently received an outraged letter from a POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY reader. He complained that a reprint of one of my past columns had been used to help to sell a book that he claimed misstated the production costs of photographic plaques. Wild statements about my lack of editorial integrity prompted a strong rebuttal.

Compact 35s
This small format is experiencing a big renaissance from simple to sophisticated models
[no value]
[no value]
Norman Rothschild
Even though not too many new compact 35 cameras were shown at this photokina, their importance should not be underplayed. After all, the first 35-mm cameras to receive autofocusing were compacts. And the new models offer a remarkable collection of features, including auto-exposure, loading, winding and rewinding, in very small packages.

The Picture Shows
In a farewell performance, photokina's cultural impresario creates a splendid "imaginary photo museum"
Some surprising pairs of old and new

John G. Morris
Cologne—L. Fritz Gruber, the grand gray fox of photokina, has done it again. For 30 years, as cultural impresario of the colossal international photo fair, he has produced one spectacular—and often controversial—show after another, involving most of the great names of modern photography, and running the gamut of showmanship from erotica to a massive August Sander retrospective.

Leendert Drukker
This is, by far, the lightest, most portable videocassette recorder on the market: you can pick it up between thumb and forefinger. Until recently, portapaks weighed 20 lbs. and up. Lone workers, perspiring profusely, would backpack them.

Edward Meyers
Did you know that a dusty, dirty, greasy, scratched UV filter is good protection for your camera lens against salt-water spray, sand, dust, and greasy finger prints? It also converts your conventional camera lens into a soft-focus type. I mention this because I believe that too many picture takers are screwing UV filters over their lenses and leaving them there for general shooting.

Do you want to know how to achieve a stunning abstract color effect such as the one seen on this page? Just ask reader Richard F. Dumas of Florida. If he relates the instructions unsmilingly, don’t feel hurt. You see, the key elements in the process were flood, fungus, and some hungry ants.

This is the era of industrial instant photography, if photokina 1980 is any guide. In a determined effort to smooth out the bumps in the recession-sensitive, amateur instant-photography business, Polaroid Corp. has introduced a batch of new industrial products.

Like a newborn colt, autofocus is struggling to its feet, and years from now, when its mature strength and utility are apparent to everyone, it will be fun to think back to these early years of its development. This year’s photokina witnessed a few out-in-the-open new products with autofocus but, as might be expected, the most interesting autofocus ideas were shown in clandestine fashion to a privileged few.

A new 3-D system tiptoes toward the market through clouds of questions
BOOK REVIEW IN BRIEF

Don Leavitt
Jerry Nims and Allan Lo of the Nimslo Corp. brought some current prototypes of their 3-D camera to show to an alternately enthusiastic and dubious press at this year’s photokina. The European press seemed to think that the camera and the pictures it produces are better than sliced bread.

During the past three decades, photokina has become something of a periodic mecca for photographers the world over, a seven-day movable feast (its dates this year were Sept. 11-18) that drew a crowd of more than 100,000 visitors this year.

With major new SLRs such as the Leica R4, Nikon F3, and Pentax LX being announced during 1980, it seems remarkable that there were still some SLR items of interest introduced for the first time at photokina '80. Some of these represented extensions of a model line established previously.

Ultrawide zooms lead a proliferating pack

Steve Pollock
Although they were not present in quite the overwhelming numbers seen at this spring’s PMA show, the independent-brand lens makers were much in evidence at photokina '80. Along with them came the usual problem of evaluating conflicting claims about who was actually making what for whom, and under what label (if any) the various products would be sold in the U.S.

The new flash units shown at photokina '80 were less than revolutionary. More units are appearing with LEDs rather than conventional readylights. There also seems to be a trend toward units that permit the user to select almost any f-stop (within reason) and then tell him what the autoworking range will be.

Leendert Drukker
This show has revealed a most significant development: a crossing of the film and video media. No longer is it possible to pigeonhole equipment into such distinct categories as cameras, projectors, video, movies or still. For example, more and more manufacturers are at work on a telecine chain for showing super 8, in color, on your TV set instead of a wall or screen.

The proliferation of 110 pocket cameras, once a prominent feature at trade shows, seems to have come almost to a standstill. At photokina '80 there were many models with small-aperture, tele, and wide-angle lenses that are mostly carbon copies of forerunners, frequently sold under private labels, and not worth including in this report.

1980 has been a slow year for new film introductions, and photokina did not change what appears to be a response to sluggish economic conditions by the major film manufacturers. As a matter of fact, there were only three important new films shown at photokina, and two of them use a relatively new technology for the creation of black-and-white negatives.

Finding camera accessories was more of a chore at photokina than at the PMA show in Las Vegas, due to sheer size. There wasn’t too much new and/or exciting, except perhaps the world’s smallest teleconverter and a posing mirror that fits in front of a camera.

The unit above is not a digital buzz saw, but rather a large model of a 72-exposure frame counter invented by George Turner of Ilford. Intended, of course, to foster use of Ilford's HP5 Auto Winder film, the counter is said to require only a minor modification of the typical 35-mm camera.

While some manufacturers are going totally electronic, Prontor has done an about-face and introduced what I believe to be an extremely practical and useful old-fashioned mechanical viewcamera shutter. I know that I should not make such an editorial judgment at this time, but having been a commercial photographer and having had to make pictures with a view camera, I feel that the Prontor Professional System cancels out one frustration of the working pro—the lack of useful automation at a reasonable cost.
