I can live with out-of-focus color-shifted Diana photos (“Family Memories,” July) in the name of memory. After all, aren’t memories (supposedly) hazy and out of focus? I applauded Douglas Faulkner’s powerful and moody “Family of Man” (June), Richard Misrach’s “Ruins by Night” (May), and yes (maybe) even Ines Roberts’ “Urban Landscapes” (May), though color for color’s sake seems banal and boring when so much can be evoked by its tasteful use.

Painters never had the problem. One may be concerned about whether a painting is a copy or a forgery, but not with the question of it being vintage, all paintings by the unique nature of the medium falling into this category. With photography, except for daguerreotypes and subsequent one-shot items, the state of affairs is more ambiguous and complicated.

Two notable senior citizens of photography, Lotte Jacobi, 84, and Barbara Morgan, who has just turned 80, recently showed their work and talked about it at the Port Washington, N.Y., Public Library and museum. They were two of the group of “Ten Women of Photography” in the exhibition of that name organized and originally shown at the International Center of Photography in New York.

Don Leavitt
Although Polaroid’s SX-70 family of Land cameras can focus as close as 10½ in. to the subject, there are some situations in which you might like to get closer. Sometimes you may want to reproduce your subject life size (1:1), and sometimes you may even want to magnify it.

The passionate camera-bag collector, Part I: Here’s what the suitcase models have to offer
[no value]
[no value]

Carl Purcell
I have a thing about camera bags. I’m a pushover for almost any new camera bag or carrying case. As a result my house looks like the check room for left luggage at London’s Heathrow airport. Each time I show up with a new bag, my patient wife gives a loud groan and suggests that we have a garage sale.

For a better-than-50-mm “normal” lens, try an 85-to 105-mm instead
BOOK REVIEW IN BRIEF

Cora Wright Kennedy
This month I’ve been thinking happy thoughts about moderate, long-focal-length lenses in the 85-mm to 105-mm class, which serve many of us so well on our 35-mm cameras. If you’ve never thought of using one of these fixed-focal-length lenses, think again.

Report from cloud nine: how they made aerial photos before there were planes
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Eaton S. Lothrop
“Anyone who talks about sending a camera up in a balloon is full of hot air.” So a 19th-century skeptic is alleged to have said. But, weak gags aside, the earth as seen from the air is quite fascinating. While many are so jaded by air travel that they rarely look out of the window, others (myself included), are entranced by the view, whether it is out of the window of a small plane or of a larger airliner, before it gets above the clouds.

Ten reasons why your electronic flash may fail, and how to avoid trouble
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Ed Farber
Failure to carefully read instructions with pen in hand (for underlining) is often the most serious of all reasons for electronic-flash malfunction. Using the wrong kind of batteries, failure to keep the capacitor formed, or improper charging procedures are usually the result of not following specific manufacturers’ instructions.

Human engineering is critical in a movie camera, far more than in a "35" which has to make only momentary exposures. A movie is, in a sense, a time/ motion study of its subject and the way the camera handles. Particularly when a tripod is so rarely used, this is a foremost consideration.

Manufacturers are rediscovering the roots of the amateur movie maker. For the past decade they have been competing with each other designing ever more flexible, more versatile cameras, with longer-range zooms, closer focusing, wider range of running speeds, time-lapse, scene-and self-timers, lap-dissolve, sound, you name it— all accompanied, inevitably, by a rise in price.

Goethe is said to have commented, "Isn’t it strange that those who would study light are always working in the dark?" Being a card-carrying member of those who study light, I can dig what the old boy was struck with: the paradox that to study something like light, it’s necessary to be able to exclude all the extraneous light and concentrate only on the light being studied.

BOOK REVIEW IN BRIEF

Arthur Goldsmith
Of late the single-lens reflex 35-mm camera has conquered the world of beyond-snapshot photography, but it was not always so. In the early 1950s, it was only a small subset of a miniature format whose sometimes fanatical practitioners were struggling to gain acceptance of the 24×36-mm rectangle as a serious medium for photojournalism and esthetic photography. Rangefinder cameras, epitomized by the Leica, were in the vanguard of this revolution, and the few SLRs available were considered by many, with some justification, as cumbersome and imprecise.
