Your pictorial, “A Wall-Watcher’s Notebook” (March issue), was very creative and enjoyable, but there was a mistake on your part in explaining what a picture represents: the bottom left picture on p. 102 is not a Korean outdoor fireplace; it’s a garbage can.

The only times I make mistakes are when I admit making them—for example:

Norman Rothschild
If being an “expert” means never making a mistake, then I fail miserably. But I’d rather be known as a photographer with human failings than as a machine. Therefore, let me tell of some goofs I’ve made so you can avoid them. Blind faith in exposure automation can be a trap.

Some predictions based on gazing into my autofocusing crystal ball
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Norman Goldberg
For some reason, no one asked me to make any predictions for the ’80s, so I will. But I realize that predicting is a dangerous sport, so I’ll limit myself to relatively few and hope that they eventually materialize. It might not be fair or accurate to call the ’80s the decade of autofocus, since it got off to its (false) start in the early ’60s, then became widely available for the first time in the late ’70s.

When most people take a picture of a moving subject, they want to freeze the action, using fast shutter speeds or electronic flash. When Jim Bengston takes a picture of a moving subject, he does just the opposite. He uses the smallest aperture and the slowest possible shutter speed.

Today’s tiny battery-powered electronic-flash units, with their small light sources, small reflectors, and narrow beam angles do not lend themselves to traditional, old-fashioned portraiture, especially the kind northlight skylights produce.

Automatic-exposure cameras: the traveling photographer’s best friend when shooting fast
BOOK REVIEW IN BRIEF
[no value]
[no value]
Carl Purcell
It shocks me to realize that some photographers are still fighting the old battle over automatic exposure versus manual or match-the-needle exposure. I recall when this issue was being heatedly debated over 15 years ago, and I regret to report that some of the old soldiers are still in the trenches fighting for that elusive holy grail they call “creative control.”

For better pictures, start having a love affair with light

Cora Wright Kennedy
If you are having trouble making strong or beautiful pictures, perhaps you are not involved enough with light. Just having sufficient illumination isn’t always enough if you want to make the most of your subject. The nature of the light—its quality and direction—can make a world of difference.

Beyond Color, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (Jan. 11-Feb. 24). The “beyond” of this show’s title denotes that rather than trying to merely document naturalistic color, as most photographers used to do, the nine image makers represented are using color expressively to convey concepts, states of mind, private perceptions, and so forth.

A funny thing happened to Martha Leonard on her way to work. “I came to work one day,” said Martha, “and someone was there taking my place.” Martha Leonard was the official photographer for Jane Byrne, the mayor of Chicago. It seems that Jay McMullen, the mayor’s press secretary (and husband) did not like a Martha Leonard photo that ended up in Us magazine.

New Photo Products for 1980
There was an avalanche of lenses, electronic flash, and super 8, but the big 35-mm news was offstage

This year the U.S. photographic industry’s moveable feast and annual mating dance between suppliers and dealers took place in desert sunshine rather than amid Great Lakes snowstorms, the Photo Marketing Association, in its wisdom, having moved the site of the 1980 PMA Convention and Trade Show from Chicago to Las Vegas.

Like many others whose attendance at PMA '80 was their first visit to this gaudy tabernacle to man's greed known as Las Vegas, I suppose all the exterior glitter dazzled me into expecting the greatest show on earth. No such luck. The simple truth is, many camera manufacturers are picking their own time and place to announce major new products.

The 1980 PMA was not a great show-for lenses, but it was a terrific one for lens names. It seems that almost every manufacturer of “independent" or private-label lenses has decided to come out with a line under his own name, or at least with a name openly associated with that of the factory.

From your experience with the contrast-control knob on your television set you surely know what contrast is. If you haven’t got enough of it, the image flattens out until it disappears. If you have too much, the image starts to look shattered—black spots against white with nothing to hold them together, and the picture looks harsh and bleak.

Try this test. Drop a shiny penny into some hypo that you’ve been using for a while. After 30 seconds or so, fish the penny out, and you’ll discover its shiny copper finish is now plated with silver. As many photographers know, conventional photographic processes depend upon light-sensitive silver salts to produce images.

Although few new 35-mm compacts were shown at Las Vegas, their importance shouldn’t be discounted. External Power Pack Set
Yashica announced three additions to the accessory line for the Contax 137 MD Quartz SLR. External Power Pack Set, a secondary power source, delivers full operational energy even during extremely cold weather. Data Back is operated by the quartz-regulated LED signal from the camera, and records on the film the photographer’s selected information — day, month, year, and ASA rating (25, 50, 100, or 400). Also compatible with all Contax series and most Yashica SLRs, Infrared Controller Set S will operate the shutter release at distances of up to 65 ft. Two channels permit operating multiple cameras simultaneously or alternately. Prices on all not available at press time. Camera bags and equipment cases abounded, and would take up most of the editorial space we are devoting to the PMA show. However, there were some worthy of mention.
