Iris Posner’s delightful article, “Covering China with a 110’’ (March issue), confirms a point often forgotten by photographers: The difference between good and bad photography lies in the eye, not in the equipment. Dr. P. M. Smith, Stamford, Ct.

How to cope with joy-killing camera breakdowns that can plague vacations
[no value]
[no value]
Norman Goldberg
Equipment failure ruins vacation! No, it’s not the headline from some sensational tabloid. It’s more like a slogan to bear in mind when you run through the other photo rules of thumb collected over the years. One of these, the trustworthy “f-16 rule,” states that, for a bright day with average subjects, the correct shutter speed for an aperture setting of f/16 is the (approximate) reciprocal of the ASA film speed.

How I improve on the U.S. Army’s basic filter kit for b&w photography
[no value]
[no value]
Norman Rothschild
There’s an old army saying I disagree with. It notes that there are three ways of doing things: the right way, the wrong way, and the army way! In the 1940s, when I had intimate contact with army methods, I found that when it came to a standard filter set for black-and-white photography, the army way was most certainly the right way.

A photographer’s magnificent obsession: recording village life in Guatemala
[no value]
[no value]
Jacob Deschin
Thirty-two yards of unbleached muslin wrapped around four tall sticks in the manner of a primitive marketplace shelter served Hans Namuth, New York photographer and filmmaker, as a makeshift outdoor portrait studio in the remote Guatemala village of Todos Santos in 1947 and again three decades later.

The care and feeding of light bulbs: how to make them last longer
[no value]

Ed Farber
It’s been 100 years since Thomas A. Edison invented the first practical incandescent lamp. Edison’s first lamp used a carbon filament that was relatively fragile and quite inefficient. It was not until 1910 that a better filament material became practical with the invention of a process for drawing tungsten wire.

Wetzlar, Germany, a community of 40,000 people, is about 30 miles north of Frankfurt. While one of its claims to fame is that Goethe lived and worked there, that fact is not particularly important, since he lived there for perhaps less than half a year.

Ever wonder how large blowups are made? It’s done with Polaroid Type 55 P/N film
[no value]
[no value]
Don Leavitt
I’m sure you’ve seen ads that say “Blow Yourself Up.” For a fistful of dollars, the advertiser will make a 2x3-ft. enlargement of any picture you send them—with or without the negative. Have you ever wondered how this is done? One preferred technique involves the use of an instant black-and-white positive/negative film called Type 55 Positive/Negative (P/N) Polaroid Land film, and a gigantic stabilization printer-processor such as that made by Itek Corp.

For better sunset pictures, aim for interesting foreground, color saturation
[no value]
[no value]
Carl Purcell
The sunset has become the tired cliché of the slide show and travelog. They inevitably end with a sonorous voice intoning, “And so we leave beautiful Tahiti and sail off into a spectacular tropical sunset.” If the lecturer doesn’t happen to have a slide of a Tahitian sunset, he can always throw in a sunset from the Virgin Islands or the Mediterranean.

Remember Kodak’s Panalure? Oh sure you do! It was that funny kind of paper that you could use to make black-and-white prints from color negatives. There—I knew it would ring a bell. Well it’s gone now. Panalure is no more. Will you miss it? I don’t know if I will.

Barbara S. Askins invented a way of getting clear pictures out of old negatives. For this achievement, she was honored February 11, 1979, as the Inventor of the Year by the Association for the Advancement of Invention and Innovation. Why did Ms. Askins look into this particular area?

A fascinating smorgasbord of the innovative, indispensable, and farfetched

Love is where you find it, but accessories need some tracking down. For some unknown reasons, most were not displayed prominently, so here’s hoping none remains undiscovered. Aetna-Optix introduced two adapters for Hasselblad lenses.

Behind the Pulitzer Prize Controversy
J. Ross Baughmann’s Rhodesian pictures won a top award in 1978 but brought him grief not glory. What happened? At stake are disturbing questions about photojournalism’s ethics
The three prize-winning pictures and the matching contact prints

Howard Chapnick
J. Ross Baughmann won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography in 1978 based on an entry of three photographs depicting acts committed by a Rhodesian military unit against the native black population. Earlier that year, the same J. Ross Baughmann “lost” the prestigious Robert Capa Award of the Overseas Press Club when his entry was disqualified because there were too many “unsolved questions” surrounding the photographs.

Paolo Monachesi first got his idea to make modern “Autochromatized” images after he discovered some beautiful, well-preserved Autochrome glass plates exposed in 1912 by his grandfather. To carry out his idea, he needed an Autochrome mosaic screen.

If you shoot a roll of Kodak Tri-X black-and-white film today and process it just like you did a roll of Kodak TriX five, 10, or 20 years ago, the results would be different. Today’s Tri-X film is sharper and has finer grain and more effective film speed.

How to Get Closer for PEOPLE PICTURES
Follow these six tips, and they’ll all but talk
Tip 1 : Cut off all excess—close in
Tip 2: Mate frame to shape of subject
Tip 3: Less is more
Tip 4: Don’t disturb—shoot candidly
Tip 5: Go formal
lip 6: Open up space

Harvey Shaman
Practically all of us in photography make the same basic mistake: we don’t get close enough. Yet, tight pictures are the ones that work best. Have you ever watched others take their pictures? They get their subject all lined up, say, “Hold it,” and then start to back away from them.

A report from the Chicago PMA Show

Arthur Goldsmith
Chicago—This year’s 55th Photo Marketing Association convention and trade show, held during winter’s last blitz in the Windy City near the end of March, was from the product standpoint largely a replay of photokina ’78, plus items first shown at pre-PMA press conferences and already reported to POP PHOTO readers.

35-mm SLRs
Economy and simplicity are the passwords for 1979

Norman Rothschild
I expected nothing astounding or revolutionary in the SLR field, and indeed there were few surprises. The trend is toward less-expensive cameras. Some, such as the Minolta XD-5 and XG-1, sport fewer, noncrucial, features of the XD-11 and XG-7, respectively, to make the balance of the features available at a lower price.

Continuing the trend noted over a year ago, lens makers are still busy redesigning their wares to be compatible with the lightweight, compact cameras they’ll be used on. This “slenderizing” program is combined with the very serious need to trim costs, and the results bear close scrutiny.

One of the great joys of the recent kindling of interest in our photographic history is that we have an excuse, if one were needed, to listen to and learn from those who are now the ancients of the craft. It is open season on the men and women who have worked in the medium for the last 50 years.

This PMA's crop of c ompact 35s brought with it a distinct sense of déjà vu. Most of the models shown had originally been introduced at last year’s photokina, and were written up in our October/December 1978 reports. One of the few non -photokina items is the tiny, folding-front Minox 35 GL.

The arrival of the Pentax Auto 110 SLR system (see “First Look” and “Off-Beat” in POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY’S April, 1979, issue) overshadows the entire field of 110 photography. At the PMA show there was the usual melange of strikingly undistinguished 110s, many looking much alike.

Omega introduced a new-generation enlarger called System 700 that supersedes the present System 600 units. The new enlarger is virtually identical to the discontinued unit except for the slightly enlarged format and condensers.

Genuinely new large-format pickings were slimmer than usual at this year’s Chicago PMA show, but this can’t be attributed to any slacking off of sales in this 4x5-in.-and-upward format field that has been greatly stimulated by recently heightened amateur interest.

Taking an apparent breather from the hectic pace of recent PMA shows, most film manufacturers have opted to refine and improve existing products rather than introduce new ones. Aside from major functional changes in Kodak’s instant color-print film and some largely cosmetic changes in Ilford’s FP-4, most activity in the sensitized-goods area revolved around photofinishing papers.

Richard Busch
With the introduction this year of the 2400 series slide projector to the American market, Hanimex is making a modest but serious challenge to the nearly total domination in this field by the Kodak Carousel series of projectors. The 2400 is actually not a new projector, having been manufactured in the Hanimex plants in Australia and Ireland for over two years, but exclusively for foreign markets.

INSTANT IMAGE FILM
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]

Instant Image Film is tough, will not tear and is hard to scratch. It is not a silver-halide film, has no ASA and can not be used in a normal camera. It is a unique black and white copy film sensitive to ultra-violet light only. It may be used in normal room light, as ordinary light bulbs give off no ultraviolet light and do not affect the film.

The last three rolls of film I developed had streaks like these at the sprocket holes. What caused them? Are they due to stale fixer plus insufficient agitation of this bath? David M. Welch, Schaghticoke, N. Y. Yes, they are. The net result of this combination is that the fixer going through the sprocket holes stopped development just beyond the holes to create lighter areas (such as the ones shown on this enlarged section of one of your negatives).
