We have been receiving a number of calls regarding the possible discontinuance of Agfa black-and-white paper-based papers (perhaps due to the introduction of Agfa PE papers in Europe). For the record: Neither Braun North America nor Agfa-Gevaert, Inc. has any intention of discontinuing either Brovira or Portriga-Rapid paper-based papers.

The treasures in the attic

ARTHUR GOLDSMITH
The history of photography, like the history of any human activity, requires revision and updating from time to time in the light of new data and fresh insights. Particularly today. Partly as a result of a heightened appreciation of the still photographic image and partly because now there’s money in collecting, sources are being tapped that previously were ignored or forgotten.

The twin-lens reflex is still very much alive and capable of making superb quality pictures
[no value]
[no value]
NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
Ever since the 1930s, a reflex camera has been my main camera for personal self-expression and experimentation, as well as for day-to-day mundane photographic tasks. Only, in those early days my trusty “shootin’ iron” was a twin-lens reflex Rollei, or TLR. Despite the decline of the popularity of the TLR, which began with the appearance of the eye-level prism for 35-mm SLRs, I have always owned, and always will own, a Rollei twin-lens reflex.

At 22 probably the youngest photo-gallery owner-director in the country, Daniel Wolf, who recently opened a shop at 30 W. 57th St. in the heart of New York’s traditional art marketplace, is already a “veteran” of three years’ standing in his field.

Consider the advantages of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries instead of nonrechargeable alkalines

BILL PIERCE
A few weeks ago the Time-Life equipment room circulated a note to the photographers. Battery damage, corrosion, had been spotted in a number of flash units, motor drives, etc. We were advised to check out our own gear. I peeked into the battery packs of a few motors, and sure enough, one was under attack from the green goblins that escape from a dying alkaline cell.

Not too long ago, in connection with work on a possible future article, I built four small cameras for myself. Although they were only little pinhole cameras and I followed a set of instructions (Kodak’s) as to materials and procedures, it was still an interesting experience.

A funny thing happened on the way to this column. I was in a New York East Side French bistro having dinner with photographically oriented people. As the restaurant’s closing hour approached, only two other guests remained. One confessed to me that the discussions about photography at our table had intrigued him.

Here’s a twist: read about how to analyze your photographs, then go out and shoot them
[no value]
[no value]
EDWARD MEYERS
When photographers show me their photographs, I look at them. No problem. Anybody can look at photographs. But when photographers show me their photographs and say, “What do you think? How do they stack up? Do you like them?”, that’s when I must make some soul-searching silent evaluations—before I open my mouth.

Colonial Williamsburg is a delightful visual experience for a photographer at any time of the year. This restoration of one of America’s early settlements is a work of art that offers a wealth of architectural detail in a beautifully landscaped setting.

Why it’s difficult to correct artificial light sources for color photography
[no value]
[no value]
ED FARBER
Light, by definition, is what the eye sees: electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths causing the sensation of vision, ranging from approximately 4,000 Angstroms (extreme violet) to 7,700 Angstroms (extreme red). The eye does not “see” or detect all these wavelengths with the same sensitivity, as shown in the illustration below.

Yashica has announced automatic versions of its popular FR to compete with such fast-selling cameras as the Canon AE-1, Pentax ME, and Minolta XE. The FR I is an automatic (aperture-preferred) and manual camera whose appearance (except for the "auto” marking on the shutter-speed dial) is identical to the manual-only FR.

DAVID VESTAL’S PHOTO WORKBOOK Handout 10
FIXING, WASHING, & DRYING PRINTS ON REGULAR (NON-RC) PAPER
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
About fixing: Fixing removes unused silver salts from the prints, so they stop being light-sensitive. But hypo (fixer) itself is dangerous to prints and gets more dangerous as dissolved silver salts build up in it with use. These silver/sulfur chemicals can contaminate prints so badly that no amount of washing can save them.

CP filters versus dichroic filters: we need an industry standard for translating one to the other

BOB NADLER
The more I get to know about color printing, the less I can understand how anyone is able to do it without a magic wand. I am seriously thinking of giving up my black plastic apron and opting for a tall, black, pointy hat with stars and moons painted on it.

Tired of spotting prints? Here’s how to fight the battle of dust and lint on negatives
[no value]
[no value]
CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
Whenever I dip into my photographic grab bag, as I did last month, it is only possible, of course, to come up with a fraction of the material I want to share. So this month I’d like to delve into an area that got ignored last time. I'm talking about a handful of ways and means that keep me from freaking out when I’m faced with the problem of dust control in printing—so that blemishes, caused by dust and lint on film, don’t show up on prints.

NORMAN GOLDBERG
In the Swedish port city of Göteborg, Yngve Ivarsson sits by tall windows overlooking the harbor and lovingly smooths metal with a hand file. Nearby, another man deftly taps a metal ring with a hammer, swings a dial indicator over it, notes the reading, swings the indicator aside, and taps again.

Every once in a while I get a dark mark, similar to a crescent moon on my 35-mm film. If I’m lucky it occurs on a blank frame. If not, it spoils a shot. What causes this? R.B. Davidson, Boston Ma. This is due to having the film buckle when loading.

It’s high time photography’s critics stopped condescending to amateurs. After all, it was amateurs who discovered the process, who pushed it along and improved it enough to make it practical for the first professionals to enter the field.

DICHROIC COLOR ENLARGERS (for 35-mm to roll film)

18 dichroic color enlargers: how they compare

BOB NADLER
A dichroic enlarger is a color enlarger, but not the only, nor always the best, kind of enlarger for color printing. Confused? I’m not surprised. If there is one thing that can be said about dichroic enlargers, it is that there is a great deal of confusion about them.

A visit to Boston's Panopticon Gallery last year to view the “New England Students of Photography" show offered a rare glimpse of the best photographs selected from students throughout the area. This show, consisting of 63 photographs from 48 students representing 21 colleges and universities, gave us an opportunity to see a cross-section of students’ work that we wouldn’t ordinarily be able to review.

The Pleasures of Seeing
A new book and exhibition by collector Sam Wagstaff give a personal, loving overview of photographic vision
[no value]
[no value]
Arthur Goldsmith
Although a relative latecomer to photographic collecting, Sam Wagstaff has won a reputation not only for success in this highly competetive activity but also for maintaining a high standard of personal taste. Beginning mostly with early 19th-century work, he more lately has begun collecting 20th-century photography, and his interests range from the familiar masters to commercial, scientific, and technical photographs, sometimes by obscure or anonymous photographers.
