Your gravure portfolio of Ralph Gibson’s alleged “Quadrants” [March issue] is a sheer waste of ink and paper. Showing bits of photographs and calling it “new art” qualifies Gibson, selling at $2,500 per bit, as the greatest con artist of our times.

Words, pictures, and The Wall Street Journal

[no value]
I don’t read The Wall Street Journal now as much as I once did; no particular reason except lack of time and any compelling reason to follow the market closely. At the Wilton, Ct., depot of a morning, waiting for the 7:25, after picking up the Times, I’ll sometimes scan The Journal's front page, looking at the extreme right leader, the extreme left leader, and that feature story smack in the middle.

Way back somewhere I heard that you could substitute a small amount of dish-washing detergent for a wetting agent, to prevent getting water marks on processed film. Is this true? Joseph R. Felton, Miami, Fl. This is one of those emergency measures that can come in handy at times.

Long before you read this, I will have spent a little over two days making Xerox color prints, and will have had an exhibition of these in the Stieglitz Gallery section of Soho Photo Gallery in New York City. Making prints on a Xerox machine that can pop them out at you every 20 seconds is an experience unlike any I’ve ever had.

JACOB DESCHIN
For the second time in its six-year history, The Witkin Gallery in New York, probably the best-known and most influential full-time photography gallery in the country, has moved again, each time to larger quarters. The new spot, with its 2,600 square feet of space, approximately twice that of its just-vacated 243 E. 60th St. location, is in the heart of New York’s traditionally art-oriented precincts—at 41 E. 57th St., near the corner of Madison Ave.

Vestal's Craft: love the book, hate the numbers

BOB SCHWALBERG
Call me a bigot, or just a photographer, but when it comes to sensitometrists I reckon that the only good one is an absent one. Except for Ruth Stapleton of Ilford Limited, of course. Ever since the last of the Available Light Indian Wars—running from about nine-and-forty to six-and-fifty—I haven’t had much use for Them, or their logarithms. Maybe because of the time I was bush-wacked by a sensi-chief who railed against the “total ignorance” evidenced by my exposure index (E.I.) and development recommendations for films he had a hand in making, or just measuring.

What price know-how? For the secrets of lens mounting, it's a cool $72.50 plus tax
[no value]

NORMAN GOLDBERG
D. F. Horne’s new book, Lens Mechanism Technology (Crane, Russak & Co., Inc., New York, S72.50, 266 pp.), is newsworthy in a field like lens and camera manufacture, which is traditionally cloaked in trade secrets. It explains, as the title implies, the all-important technology of lens mounts, from those on modest plastic cameras to the most elaborate.

Direct flash is an easy and sure way to capture dimly lighted events. For that reason it enjoys a justifiable popularity with news photographers and family snapshooters. The relatively new electronic-flash units that provide automatic exposure control make this technique even easier than before.

See for yourself how irradiation helps
But will it work for color, too?

BOB SCHWALBERG
Four little lamps glowing inside a camera’s film chamber may one day brighten your way to better photography. Called “concurrent photon amplification” (CPA) by its inventor, Mel Cole of Danvers, Ma., the new process enhances film speed by irradiating the sensitized emulsion crystals with measured doses of weak light added during the actual camera exposure.

A “lighting” is simply a geometric relationship of a light source, an object or event, and the camera (or the viewer’s eye). It creates an image with a certain effect. When the geometry is changed, the effect is changed with it. The gist of this lesson is to create “lightings” of two cubes—a white one and a black one—then photograph them to make handsome pictures.

If one were to speak of lineage, we might say the OM-2 was out of the Pen FT sired by the OM-1. From the Pen FT we get compactness; from the OM-1 innovative design. But the OM-2 is in a category all its own. Conceived sometime before photokina, 1974, its gestation period is over and now at its birth we can herald a new generation of cameras.

Ever since I’ve been able to hold a magazine I’ve been fascinated by the National Geographic. Through its pages I have traveled, vicariously, over, under, and above the earth. I’ve always felt that its pages carried, technically, some of the best and most explanatory photography seen in any magazine of its type.

Diffusion is most often used in portraiture as an emergency technique for minimizing, or eliminating, skin blemishes, including rough pores, pimples, acne, mottle, skin lines, bags under the eyes, stray wisps of hair, peach fuzz, and freckles.

jill freedman CIRCUS DAYS
A warm and sensitive essay on the traveling tent-show life by one of America's most dedicated "new" photojournalists

RICHARD BUSCH
The photographs in our gravure portfolio this month are selections from Jill Freedman’s recent book Circus Days—surely one of the best photodocumentary books to have been published in a long time. The pictures were made during a two-month period in the summer while Jill and a friend traveled around the northeastern part of the United States with the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. circus, intimately following the people’s lives and work during a series of one-day stands in small towns from Vermont to Ohio.

For my tests I used both color and black-and-white films with a single-lens reflex camera connected to a motor drive. Thus the energy-saving units were cycled as fast as readylight ignition was available. This gave me some very nice sequence shots of my young daughter as she practiced some baton tricks.

ADRIAN VANCE
The cities of California are more like the duchies of old Europe than the metropolises of modern America. And the great roaring mouse of the state is San Diego. It takes courage to stake your “City Limit” signs 100 miles from City Hall, build the world’s largest zoo, and establish a whole new concept in entertainment called a “space theater.”

You, like most readers, would probably be quite incensed if I told you when—on what date, and at what second—you would be allowed to read this column. And you might also resent it if you were to discover that your favorite art museum or photo gallery had cut its master-pieces into rectangles, mounted spaced apart and interlaced with strips of advertising for shampoo, aspirin, and toothpaste.

DON SUTHERLAND
The Nizo Professional is one of about a dozen super 8s that have the delightful ability to do almost everything you’ve ever heard of, and perhaps one or two things you haven’t. Its rampant versatility is not, however, the reason for its “Professional” designation, for the overwhelming majority of its features are present in the nearly identical Nizo 801.
