I found two articles in your December issue particularly interesting. One is Carl Purcell’s column [“Traveler’s Camera"], and the other is about the old Acme Newspictures agency [Simon Nathan’s “Simon Says” column]. Back in those days I was in the Navy, and I have maybe a couple of hundred pictures of Hong Kong, Kowloon and, of course, the Wanchai District.

Turning kids—and teachers— on to photography

Arthur Goldsmith
It isn’t often that participants in a hands-on workshop are so enthused at the end of a long day that they break into spontaneous applause in appreciation of it all. But that’s exactly what happened at the wrap-up session of POP PHOTO’S November, 1975, one-day seminar/workshop on “Simple Photography In Your Classroom,” an extension of our “Photography as a Fourth R” program designed to help elementary-grade teachers to introduce photography into their classrooms.

Fred McDarrah has recovered from his dog bite. This is not to be confused with the scorpion bite that he wrote about in the current Invitation To Photography. Whereas a Texas scorpion bit McDarrah’s toe, an East Hampton Mutt bit his rump. "The trials and tribulations of a street photographer are many,” he noted.

I've heard it is possible to use overcoats to make an emergency changing bag outdoors in the field, so you can cope with film that has jammed in the camera or even ripped. How would one do this? Kenneth Bearnere, Chicago, II. This is quite easy if you start with at least one dark, tight-weave overcoat that is opaque to light.

Why is Michael York like the horse that Eadweard Muybridge photographed to win a large bet for the already-wealthy Leland Stanford? Saul David made the comparison, and it’s not an idle one. There’s a historic parallel between York and the horse.

How totally refreshing, then, to enter the gallery and find largely work I had not seen before: portraits of men and couples, photographs of male nudes, and a series of intimate, capsulated still lifes. Judy Dater, Oakes Gallery, The Oakland Museum, Oakland, Ca. (Sept. 23-Nov. 30, 1975). When this new exhibition of work by Judy Dater opened, I would be less than truthful if I did not admit to a small feeling of “not again” when I received the announcement.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
Many years ago, I spent the better part of a morning discussing the merits of a famous artist with a psychotherapist friend of mine. Finally he said, “That’s enough about intellect and talent. I’d be more interested to hear about the person!” In reading POP PHOTO’S series, “How To Turn Your Kid On To Photography,” I always had a lingering desire to know what the author Don Cyr was like, not only as a teacher or intellect, but as a person.

The idea for a column is sometimes generated by need; other times it responds to reader letters; at still other times it simply tries to inform. It shouldn’t (for me, at least) be generated by anger. But anger almost made me write this column some months ago, so I shelved it until I cooled off, and now I think I can proceed calmly.

In the sensitometric view, emulsion speed is built into films when they leave the factory, and the available-darkness photographer can but seek ways and means to best utilize this inherent characteristic. The quest for more emulsion speed began with Daguerre, and is still very much with us.

More and more, I am starting to hear of 35-mm cameras with their many interchangeable components and accessories referred to as “complete 35-mm systems.” Dangerously wrong. It takes far more than a camera to produce that final print or transparency image on a screen.

What do you open a series of color-darkroom columns with? I thought about that for a while until I realized that whatever it was, it would have to be something that any color printer could relate to, and find to be of interest. As soon as I began to think in these terms, I knew I had the perfect subject—Kodak's Color Darkroom Dataguide.

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
If you haven’t done a bit of realistic thinking about theft and that camera you carry around, isn’t it about time you did? For instance, how careful do you have to be as you go out with your camera? Or to phrase this somewhat more pointedly, what specific precautions is it wise to take so you won’t get ripped off as you move about from place to place?

You don’t need a darkroom to teach kids photography. You don’t even need a sink that has hot and cold running water. This was amply demonstrated in many of the projects outlined over the past few months. Of course, if you can set up some kind of temporary-darkroom situation, most do-ityourself photography projects can be greatly facilitated.

Guaranteed to be safe to underwater depths of 160 ft., the Nikonos III 35-mm camera can be used on land in rain, snow, and sunshine. Features include: 35-mm Nikkor f/2.5 interchangeable lens, bright viewfinder with parallax-correction lines for close distances and frame marks for 35and 80-mm lenses, single-lever film advance with safety lock, and negative buoyancy so that camera will sink slowly if released underwater rather than shoot to the surface.

LEENDERT DRUKKER
Unbeknown to the general public are a pair of remarkably flexible projection systems that bridge the schism between stills and Films. Both use super 8 footage, paced by inaudible pulses on a standard audio cassette. Both run single frame, 18 or 24 fps, even single frame or in-between, while the audio merrily rolls along.

EDWARD MEYERS
I’m not now in the postcard business, and I have never been in the postcard business, but that might change. I always thought that photographers in the postcard business made their money as follows: Get hired by a client, such as a motel or restaurant, to make photographic views of a building, the interior, and perhaps the chef displaying the house specialty.

No matter how much you resist, there are times when you find yourself in situations where you need an artificial-light source. Sure, you may opt for a long shutter speed and wide aperture on your camera, but by the time the exposure is over, the subject may have flown away.

Can photography once again help in convincing Congress to create a national park? William Henry Jackson first used this technique in 1872 when Congress established the Yellowstone area as the world’s first national park. Government photographers from the Alaska Planning Group have collected nearly 50,000 transparencies in their studies of Alaskan territory being considered as additions to the four national systems— parks, wildlife refuges, forests, and wild and scenic rivers.

Will it happen—art galleries featuring nonsilver prints made exclusively by Xerography? And will the term “Xerographer” become as much a part of the English language as “photographer”? I don’t have a crystal ball to foretell the future, but I can tell you that right now, with the help of a Xerox 6500 color copier and a 6500 color-slide adapter, you can enter into an entirely new world of print-making from color slides.

THREE COLOR-PRINT PROCESSES COMPARED
We printed the same color negative with Beseler, Kodak, and Unicolor neg-to-pos kits. Here's what happened

MICHELE FRANK
The only new color-print-making process here is Unicolor R-2 Chemistry and Unicolor Resin Base color paper. The best way to find out if it’s any good is to use it to make color prints. That’s exactly what we did. But you must have something to compare it to, so we printed the same color negative with the Beseler and Kodak negto-pos processes.

There’s no question that the Beseler 2 Step process is by far the easiest to do, and for my eyes it produced good color with moderate contrast. It has two chemical steps plus a wash and can be used at any temperature between 66 and 107 F. After the final processing (bleach-fix) step you can pile up to nine prints into a tray of water and keep them there to be taken out to a sink in another room for washing.

Of the three neg-to-pos systems tested, only Unicolor does not use Kodak’s 37 RC paper. Their paper is made by Mitsubisihi of Japan. Unicolor makes the chemicals. I particularly liked the Unicolor paper for one reason—it did not exhibit the touch-me-not quality I had come to expect of Kodak’s paper.

Despite its heavy reliance on electronics for the auto-exposure feature that is the GAF L-ES’ rightful claim to fame, it’s still for the most part a mechanical device. In this area, there’s ample evidence of good design and manufacturing practice.

I was not immediately impressed by the overall appearance of the GAF L-ES: it seemed a bit archaic-looking. But as I began to work with the camera, I found myself intrigued by some of its features. The most outstanding one is an aperture-preferred automatic-exposure system that can be used with any M-42 (Pentaxtype) screw-mount lens.
