I have been receiving POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY for the past four or five months, and I must say that your July issue is really a beautiful issue—especially the article on René Gelpi by Richard Busch. I feel that René Gelpi’s ghetto works are very beautiful and very real.

The ASA scale on my SLR 35 only goes down to 20. Sometimes I need to set it at a rating of 8, 6, or 3 for special purposes. How do I compensate for the lower settings? Richard W. Truford, Wichita, Ks. Just remember that ASA settings work on the halving and doubling principle.

Will silver hoarders kill photography?

KENNETH POLI
"Paying 350 to 450 percent premium for silver coins.” “Wanted: pre-1965 silver coins. Highest prices paid.” Offers like these, common in newspapers in the first half of this year (perhaps even more enticing by the time you read this), drove the price of silver from 1973 average of $2.56 to a high of $6.70 last February.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
One of the basic tenets of the average person’s upbringing is to always appear right, to “look nice,” and offend no one. In actuality, most people hide their bad side as much as possible, letting it show only in the form of “cracks” at others, “put-downs,” or so-called opinions.

One of the highlights of the summer-long bicentennial photographic exhibition, “Manhattan Now,” which opened last April at the New York Historical Society, was the emergence of painter-photographer-teacher Mark Feldstein as close observer, visual documentarian and interpreter of New York City’s fast disappearing sculptural facade in lower Manhattan.

Jacob Israel Avedon: Photographed by Richard Avedon, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (May 1-June 16). My father was a man to whom I didn’t speak for 20 years. We were reconciled before the end, but though I loved him (and I know he loved me) I didn’t like him.

LEENDERT DRUKKER
Most sound projectors—and audiences—cry for one: a mike-input exploder. The moment you plug in the mike, it explodes. Bitter? Perhaps, but not without cause. Bear with me, if you can: “Up in the mountains, one understands why great sages have sat up one peaks and pondered... why man has had to scale mountains because they are there.”

NORMAN GOLDBERG
In this wacky field called photography, where so many disciplines are blended, we acquire a jargon that sometimes intimidates the beginner. If the beginner stays with it, and masters the arcane lingo, it isn’t long before everything begins to drop into place, and the mysteries start evaporating.

Magazine cameras made plate-changing quick and simple
[no value]

EATON S. LOTHROP
From the beginning, the process of changing the plate in the camera, replacing it with another, was time-consuming. Any idea or contrivance that would allow rapid plate-changing provided the potential for making more exposures in less time.

Hone your focusing ability by studying depth-of-field charts for your lenses

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
If you are an available-light buff, when was the last time, if ever, that you took a really good look at some depth-of-field tables? That’s not the sort of thing most free-wheeling, close-working existing-darkness photographers like to do.

New skyscraper: ideal location for shooting Paris
[no value]
[no value]
LES BARRY
PARIS—Let’s face it, the most recent addition to the Paris skyline is an outrage. The new 58-story Tour Montparnasse may be some sort of an architectural tour de force, or even a remarkable achievement in urban renewal, but to my sensibilities this sleek modern monolith that sticks up from the heart of a charming old section of the city is definitely an unpleasant shock.

What the Spokane police department didn't tell me about Expo '74
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
About 300 yards from the A & W Root Beer Pavilion, at Spokane’s Expo ’74, I noticed that Eastman Kodak Company had set up their tent and audio-visual presentation. Now I guess it’s wrong to say that Kodak was exhibiting in a tent, but if I told you that it was an inflated building, would you believe me? The main excitement on the single day I visited Expo ’74 was the fact that there was a power failure that knocked out the various multimedia presentations for nearly four hours.

YVONNE KALMUS
Victoria, that most durable and estimable monarch, began her reign in 1837. By the time it ended in 1901, the technical process/art we call photography had moved from a cumbersome daguerreotype infancy through wet-plate childhood and dry-plate adolescence to the brink of roll-film-in-a-hand-held-camera adulthood.

Beseler's PM color analyzer is essentially a small-volume home unit with outstanding sensitivity and a combination of features previously unavailable at its price level. There are several types of color analyzers. All of them share similar circuitry; what differs is the photodetector.

Now that many of the world’s prestige camera makers are making “point-and-shoot” photography available to serious photographers, it would seem that all of the skill formerly associated with handling a high-grade camera has been dialed out.

BILL BINZEN a touch of whimsy...

RICHARD BUSCH
One thing about Bill Binzen that has not changed much since he first became truly serious about photography in the late 1960s is his basic enthusiasm for photography itself. And in spite of a successful 12-year career as a professional, which has taken him into some hard-nosed arenas where photographers often become hacks and cynics, photography has remained a dynamic force in his personal life and world,

Lightning is the ultimate in electronic flash. It’s one of those magic displays that scares some and fascinates others. Either way, a thunder and lightning storm is one of the most powerful and dramatic of nature’s displays. In a single bolt as much as 100-million volts of electricity can light up a sky for seconds.

TELE-CONVERTERS how to use them near and far

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
TELE-CONVERTERS were originally introduced by Spiratone under the TelXtender trademark. Basically, they are groups of lens elements of negative (minus) power. A 2X tele-converter doubles, effectively, the focal length of a lens. Thus, a 50-mm becomes 100-mm, a 100-mm becomes 200mm, etc.

Nikon has the alternative for those photographers wanting an automatic camera with shutter priority. It's the Nikon F2S with the DS-1 EE aperture-control attachment. If you already own a Nikon F2, what it will mean is the investment into several new pieces of gear: first, the F2S Photomic Finder DP-2, the DS-1 EE aperture-control attachments, and a power source for it.

AL GROTELL
If someone had asked me a question about underwater photography six years ago. I would have attributed it to a case of mistaken identity. At that time in my life, I hardly had any interest in photography at all, and had never, for that matter, even ventured past the life buoy at Brooklyn's Brighton Beach—much less taken a camera underwater to make pictures! But in 1968, when I was 34 years old and enjoying the winter sun on a Caribbean vacation, I noticed an adventurous tourist taking a SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) lesson in the hotel swimming pool—and that was the beginning.

Star Test: Centering was perfect. Both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberrations were present in about average amounts for this focal length, but at two zones, the 1/3-out and far-edge, there was no sign of any lateral color. The slightly undercorrected spherical aberration caused the negligible focus shift of 0.03-mm when stopping down from wide open to f/5.6.

The Leica CL may be regarded both as a self-contained system and also as an ancillary model to the Leica M series. It’s the shortest and lightest Leica ever made. Yet it incorporates the same basic bayonet lens mount as the M series and a fine through-the-lens metering system similar to the M5’s.

Anyone looking closely at the interior of the Leica CL could easily conclude that it was made in Wetzlar. The Leitz touch is unquestionably present, both in design and execution. This, more than anything else that could be said about the camera should comfort Leica fans who may have doubted that the Leitz way with a camera could be transplanted to Osaka.

By rounding off the corners of negatives with an ordinary fingernail clipper, you minimize the possibility of scratching your films when putting them in envelopes. This also reduces the chances of tearing the sides of glassine envelopes.
