Congratulations on publishing a fine article, “Exposure Control and the Zone System” by Fred Picker in the April issue. I would like to make some comments about this article and zone system photography. First of all, do not, I repeat, do not rush out and try placing print values by increasing or decreasing exposure.

SECRET SURVEY is now being conducted by Konica to determine which way they should take the T-3 camera system lens-wise. Now that they are so far ahead AE-wise. it was decided to look into the matter of adding a few lenses that photographers think they need but actually buy very few of.

New photographic center makes its debut in Chicago
[no value]
[no value]
ARTHUR GOLDSMITH
The most recent and visible symbol of Chicago’s growing importance as a center of photographic activity is a brick converted warehouse/ factory on 364 W. Erie St. Called the Center for Photographic Arts, it first opened its doors to the public in March of this year and offers a combination of gallery space, archives, research facilities, lecture programs, photographic print sales—and potential for future expansion into teaching facilities—that is unique to the Second City, and, in fact, has no direct counterpart in New York.

Some technical and esthetic hints to improve your picture quality
[no value]
[no value]
NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
Many years ago, my dad described a certain host as one who could cook and serve a fine meal, but invariably forgot to put the rags away that had been used to wipe the table, leaving them near the main serving dish. Many of today’s photographs seem to be suffering from that same lack of attention the host gave to the rags on the table.

Coffee, conversation, and photography made Limelight the cafe with a difference
[no value]
[no value]
JACOB DESCHIN
A whiff of espresso from a cafe as she strolled with a photographer friend through a San Gennaro festival sparked the idea: a combination coffeehouse and photography gallery that could pay for itself. For a long time Helen Gee, a New York-based commercial artist, had been wanting a center where those who loved photography could meet and talk in the congenial and relaxed atmosphere of a place that showed photographs regularly.

Alfred Hitchcock discusses the key to film suspense: . . you must let the audience have information. Now let us take the old-fashioned bomb theory. You and I are sitting and talking . . . about baseball for five minutes. Suddenly a bomb goes off and the audience has a 10-second terrible shock.

How newspapers all over the world showed comet Kohoutek before it showed itself
[no value]

EDWARD MEYERS
To photograph the comet Kohoutek was a challenge to many, a dream to some, ecstasy to a few', and just a job to me. Yes, I photographed the comet Kohoutek more times and on more days (nights) than probably any other person. I figure that I made over 200 different pictures of Kohoutek.

EATON S. LOTHROP
Take the picture, advance the film—finish the roll, process it (or have it done)—and, when the pictures come back, get duplicates of the ones we like. We amateur photographers have it pretty easy. The time was, however, when it wasn’t that simple, by any means.

We were having a few laughs in a Chinese restaurant here in New York City the other night, and your name came up. Your name came up because the discussion got around to temporary folk heroes, and there’s this 23-year-old photographer named Fred Conrad who was telling a group of us that you were it for him.

How to get crisp pictures hand-held at 1/30 sec
[no value]
[no value]
CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
The longer I write about photography and teach it, the more I realize that a great many amateurs just can’t knock off really crisp, handheld, 1/30-sec shots with a normal lens. Maybe this surprises you. But the plain facts are that I see far too many of these 1/30-sec available-light pictures which can’t be blown up to a really good 8x10, let alone an 11x14 print.

It was, from a number of viewpoints, a more interesting and important show than most expected. Held late in March in Chicago, it was the 50th anniversary of the Master Photo Dealers’ & Finishers’ Association trade shows. Although Grant Park outside the Conrad Hilton was dusted with snow and the temperature dropped one night to near zero, the action inside was superheated.

The really great news about color films is improved image quality, rather than sensational increases in speed. Claimed for the new film are improved, more saturated color, finer grain, and greater sharpness.

what you should know about TELEPHOTO LENSES
Part One of an in-depth survey of long lenses, how they work, and how to use them

BOB SCHWALBERG
Four score and a year ago, an English man named T.R. Dallmeyer beat a number of his continental optical competitors to the patent office in a hairbreadth finish that won him immortality as the inventor of the telephoto lens. How Dallmeyer managed to obtain legal exclusivity for what is essentially only an adaptation of two much older devices—the patentless Galilean telescope, which was invented in Holland a year before Galileo heard about it in 1609, and the negative Barlow lens used by astronomers—is as mysterious as the device is simple.

A single-element lens works like an infinite series of prisms, bending the short blue-violet wavelengths more than the long orange-red ones. Yellow-green rays (for which the eye has maximum sensitivity) lie at the center of the visible spectrum, and their focus falls midway between those for red and violet rays.

This essentially simple optical construction results in a lens whose physical length, from front surface to image, is shorter than its effective focal length. Only two elements are required, a positive (converging) lens, L1, which focuses rays from an infinitely distant object to point a, and a negative (diverging) lens, L2, which stretches this focus to point b.

The dramatic growth of a picture from the empty whiteness of photographic paper is a magic so sublime that photographers never tire of seeing it, even after 20 or 30 years. In the printing process we witness the marvelous birth of something out of nothing.

The Topcon Supreme makes a bid for those camera buffs who would like many of the features seen only on the most prestigious "pro" 35-mm SLRs while still coming through at a price designed not to require a second mortgage on a house. It consists of Topcon's Super DM with some important additions.

RICHARD BUSCH
There is much in common between the photograph of the ghetto gladiator on the opposite page and countless other striking portraits of people made throughout the history of photography. The basic intent has been the same for both—to show an accurate likeness of the subject in as honest and straightforward a way as possible, and, as much as the situation permits, allowing the person to assume a pose and an expression that best reveals the self that he or she would like the world to see.

Star Test: Centering was slightly off. There was about an average amount of longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration, with the latter the better corrected of the two. The easily detected undercorrected spherical aberration caused a focus shift of 0.14 mm when stopping down from wide-open to f/5.6. While this amount is large it is considered to be (just) within safe limits.

A basic choice EE single-lens reflex camera makers must make these days is whether to endow their cameras with shutter-speed preselection where the mechanism chooses the aperture, or diaphragm preselection in which the mechanism selects the shutter speed.

Ricoh has departed from the usual practice of having the top and bottom cover panels of 35-mm SLRs made of sheet metal, stamped and deep-formed. The practice calls for expensive dies that progressively deep-form the metal, requiring several steps in the formation of the tall hump that sits over the pentaprism.

HOW TO TIE YOUR FILM TOGETHER
Look for the right connections, and you can bring even dusty odds and ends back to life

WILLIAM JOHNSON
Everyone knows you should think about editing before you shoot. But does everyone do it? Of course not. With home movies it seems much easier to shoot first and think afterwards. The chances are that you, too, have a skeleton in the closet—a stack of old unedited film rolls, all unplanned odds and ends.

Yvonne Kalmus
Documentlytary Expression and Thirties America, by William Stott. New York: Oxford University Press, 1973; hardcover, $12.50. America in the 1930s was many things—talking movies and the golden age of the Hollywood musical, radioed “Fireside Chats” with FDR, and the Sunday funnies with New York’s “Little Flower.”

I am interested in stereoscopic projection of three-dimensional slide pairs. I have looked for a supply of good-quality viewing glasses for this, but to no avail. Can you suggest a source of supply? B. H. French, St. Clair Shores, Mi. The Marks Polarized Corp., 153-16 10th Ave., Whitestone, N.Y. 11357, can supply you with three different types.
