The article on the Light Gallery in the March issue of POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY was a totally delightful surprise. A good deal of my misspent professional life has been with writers and the press, and I have a “let the chips fall where they may” attitude concerning facts and slant.

TO MAP INDIVIDUAL VISION PATTERNS, NASA has developed a machine that can detect and plot visual defects, such as retinal detachment and abnormal blind spots, called scotoma—possibly caused by looking at intense light. Device looks like a large slide viewer.

FOCUS ON SOUND

It's easier than ever to record on location
[no value]

Movie and slide showmen out to record a realistic on-location sound track are getting all the breaks. Just a decade ago, the only way out would be to purchase either a heavy, or expensive, or else a scratchy recorder. Those were the days when anything taking smaller than seven-inch reels was considered “miniaturized”; when you had to expect to pay upwards of hundreds of dollars for a halfway compact machine offering decent performance; and when the reward for all your effort would be a dislocated back.

I am interested in several high-quality recorders but they all come adjusted for a specific brand of tape that costs considerably more than “standard” tape. Will I be able to adjust these recorders for my usual brand? Most high-fidelity recorders now come preadjusted for low-noise tape.

What is the difference, if any, between exposure index (E.I.) and ASA ratings? Wilki Tom, Los Angeles, Ca. Sometimes they can be used interchangeably, sometimes not. Strictly speaking, ASA should refer only to the film rating given by the manufacturer.

What do the 2¼ cameras have that could be useful for 35-mm SLRs?
[no value]
[no value]
NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
An old saw is the one about not being able to see the forest because the trees get in the way. Unfortunately, this saying is all too true among certain designers of photographic paraphernalia. Nowadays we blithely accept the 35-mm SLR as an example of sophisticated design, with the ultimate yet to come.

Never stand when you can sit—not even in the darkroom

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
Is your darkroom really as comfortable as it could be? Or do you feel as if you’d been through an exhausting hassle after eight or 10 hours of printing? Some time back (in the February, 1972, issue), I touched on the idea of comfort while enlarging.

Probably the most difficult subject for me to write about is my personal approach to photography. I don't mean commercial photography. I mean the kind of picture taking I do just because I want to do it. Sometimes these pictures are published.

Sinar-c is similar to the Sinar-p view camera except for a simplified lens standard, and can be converted to a “p” at any time by purchasing the Sinar-p lens standard. (The “c” standard can then be used as auxiliary bellows support, as a copy board for macrophotography and small reproductions, as a carrier for the Sinar mirror, etc.)

Richard Blinkoff—Photographs of Mexico, at Discovery/Modernage, New York City (Feb. 1-29). This emotion-laden series of black-and-white images is among the best that has been presented at the Discovery/ Modernage galleries; as such, it indicated just how much fine photography remains untapped even in New York City.

BILL PIERCE
Few photographers are familiar with Kodak 2485 High Speed Recording Film, the speed champ that can be exposed at E.I. 8,000. In the past Kodak recommended the use of a special-order developer for it, so most photographers found it easier to investigate the slower 2475 Recording Film, for which Kodak recommended several more-readily-available developers.

NATALIE ROSENHECK
A young photographer breezed into our editorial offices one day last summer, explaining casually that he hadn’t prepared a presentation for us—“I just brought along a few hundred pictures taken in the last three weeks.” Ordinarily this is not (repeat not) an approach well geared to weary-eyed editors.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
Picking the “right” 35-mm daylight color slide film is somewhat like judging a beauty contest. After you’ve awarded the prizes, you often have second thoughts about some of those other beauties. Therefore, let’s not get involved in this sort of nonsense, and let us not make this into a contest.

Real places and settings are what interest Bill Binzen, who likes to “drift around and see what I can see and feel what I can feel.” “Pictures are pretty much everywhere,” he says. “I never tire of walking around my backyard. A clear, full-face photograph of me (and quite possibly you) is on file in the world’s largest collection of mug shots, in the Federal Building at 1425 K St., N.W., Washington, D.C. But, unlike the pictures in the National Portrait Gallery or the Smithsonian Institution, you’ll never see any of the estimated 37,000,000 portraits unless yours happens to be among them.

When Rene Gelpi was a machinist working in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a friend looked at his off-hour photographs and suggested he try a job with his employer, an advertising agency. Gelpi did. While working there, he assisted a free-lance photographer with an advertising campaign who in turn offered him a job. Gelpi took it.

Rounding up reindeer in Sweden’s Lapland, standing watch on a square-rigger off Nova Scotia, serving with the Peace Corps in Borneo, photographing codfish near the Norwegian islands, polar bears underwater at Spitsbergen, marlins in Mexico—and almost getting spiked by one—Fred Baldwin personifies the adventure photographer.

The Canon FTb, a 35-mm SLR, may be thought of in two ways. (1) Canon FT users can consider it an upgraded version of their camera. Similar in most respects, it adds the feature of through-the-lens metering at full aperture with new Canon FD lenses.

Comments: Like the earlier FT-QL and Pellix, as well as the F-1, of which it's a contemporary, the FTb exhibits the Canon earmarks of extreme care in assembly: thin shim washers assure near-zero play in the fit of nearly every part, and ball bearings are used on high-speed or heavily loaded shafts.

It’s no surprise to me to hear about someone with closets full of camera equipment, all of it up-to-date and in great condition, yet never used to make pictures. The equipment simply belongs to a lover of machines, and the same guy may own a collection of guns, yet not be a shooter or hunter.

WHO NEEDS 16-MM?
The intermediate movie format —between super 8 and 35-mm is hardly dead, but it has been put out of a couple of jobs

DON SUTHERLAND
The first home movies were shot in the then-called “substandard” format, 16-mm, but after 8-mm appeared in the early 30s, definitions began to change. More and more, 8-mm became the home-movie norm and, although many amateurs stuck by their 16-mm guns, the larger format made inroads into professionalism.
