I heartily endorse Mr. Livick’s practice of putting his camera in an old bag ["The Unique Image," January, 1972, issue], and would further suggest that he not take it out of the bag. His freedom in "painting it in," his distortion of the negatives beyond all resemblance to their subjects, and his admiration for "real art" all indicate that he would be happier as a painter.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
Despite the current proliferation of zany photographs that exhibit lots of fury but signify nothing, photographers attempt in the main to achieve some kind of picture reality. In the process, too many of them become ensnared in formalistic discussions rather than in the feelings evoked by their images.

Do you have any suggestions on how to remove dust from mounted color slides without damaging the film? William A. Bloom. Jr., Keesler AFB, Ms. Simple dust removal can be done with various tools: antistatic brush, antistatic cloth, or blasts of air from a large syringe or use of a special aerosol product (such as Omit, Air-Sweep, etc.).

One of the real facts of life about photography is that you can’t separate the tools from the creativity. By extension, however, new tools often suggest and spur different visual fun. Many of us have appreciated this for years, and have reveled in this exciting aspect of picture making.

JACOB DESCHIN
"Lew!" The voice on the phone was frantic. "Where’s the book? Here it’s September, and I still have to lay out the course, but I can’t do it without your book. Please do something!” Lewis Jacobs, film making’s own historian and author of several books used as texts in motion picture courses at colleges and universities all over the country, was not a man to let a friend down.

EDWARD MEYERS
When my 120 color film supply is low, I run out to the local professional supplier, who always has a large stock on hand, and who claims to store all films in a refrigerator. Since I buy in quantity—a minimum of 20 rolls at a time—he claims to charge me and other photographers the lowest price in town.

There is a great deal of talk within the industry about video cassettes and the riches they offer both the film maker and the distributor smart enough to get on the bandwagon now. Now I really am confused. First there was standard tape, then chromium-dioxide, now there is high-density tape. How does highdensity tape differ? High-density tape is slightly better than equal-quality "standard" tape. Generally, you don’t require a special recorder bias adjustment to get a slightly lower noise level and somewhat better high-frequency response.

The Silver Sunbeam —delightful excursion into photography's past

Recently, this Germany-based correspondent was amazed to discover an absolutely mint copy of the instruction manual for the first 1925 Leica model on the desk of a New York editor. Turning the pages with something like the trepidation of an archeologist unrolling one of the Dead Sea scrolls, I discovered the source of this unimaginably rare find: it was a facsimile reprint of the first 1864 edition of The Silver Sunbeam by John Towler, M.D. (Morgan & Morgan, Inc., 400 Warburton Ave., Hastings-on-Hudson, New York 10706, S1 2.50).

What other cities can learn from Australia's capitol, Canberra
[no value]

LES BARRY
Sitting on a hillside, overlooking the city of Canberra, it’s practically impossible for anyone to imagine that just a short time ago this bustling metropolis, the national capitol of Australia, was grazing and farming land. The actual selection of Canberra as capitol goes back to 1900, but a lot of years passed before it became a reality; and even though it’s one of those planned cities, I doubt if anyone planned or anticipated that it would grow into the important municipality that it has become.

Each year, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) brings together about a dozen well-known photographers for what’s known as the flying faculty. The Department of Defense furnishes some old but trusty flying machines, and the flying faculty hops across the country conducting what’s known as the flying short course.

PAUL STRAND:

JACOB DESCHIN
This article is based largely on two long conversations I had with Paul Strand, five years apart: the first at his home in Orgeval, near Paris, in October, 1966; the second last November, at his temporary residence in New York City. Both are integrated here for the purpose of this piece.

OTT GANGL
I mated my Beseler 4x5 enlarger (it has a color filter drawer, tilts horizontally, and accepts all negative sizes up to 4x5) with a 35-mm Nikkormat FTN SLR camera plus Micro-Nikkor lens, and ended up with a duplicating machine. Any similar enlarger and camera will do the same job—the only requirements being that the camera have a macro-type lens or "normal" focal length plus extension tubes.

I’m becoming ever more interested in photographs that have a supernatural look to them. Since they’re being created by the thousands all over the country, I assume my interest is shared. I personally think it is one facet of a religious revival, although it would be impossible to prove.

Shoot pictures with way-out films and save money, too

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
If you use a lot of 35-mm film, you can save money by loading your own cartridges. The so-called "suggested price" for a 36-exposure cartridge of black-and-white film is about $1.25. By comparison, a 100-ft. roll of the same film costs $8.10.

Nonstandard procedures and color photography don't mix. At least that's what most of us have been led to believe, and this belief can be inhibiting, chaining us to tamely attractive factory-standard prints or transparencies that have been made "by the book."

RENEE BRUNS
His face was as familiar to the stage and screen stars of the 1920s and 30s as the stars were to their adoring audiences. He was on a first-name basis with Charlie Chaplin, lunched with Gloria Swanson in Paris, and persuaded a shy and fragile Bessie Love to pose for him in the nude.

The Minolta SR-T 100 is a companion camera to the SR-T 101. By eliminating some of the 101’s features (1/1,000-sec top speed, shutter speed readout in the viewfinder, mirror lock-up, self-timer) Minolta can offer a similar camera at a lower price.

Comments: The cross-coupling of shutter and film speeds, together with diaphragm setting, to the meter is accomplished with a braided fabric cable system. This has been commented upon previously (see Lab Report on the Minolta SR-T 101, Popular Photography, August, 1968) and it's only fair to speculate that Minolta has had the benefit of time to satisfy themselves about the worthiness of this system, and have given evidence of their confidence by its continued use in the SR-T 100.

A.D. COLEMAN
Maggie Sherwood’s purple houseboat, the Floating Foundation of Photography, doesn’t travel very fast—top speed is about four knots—but it’s sure hard to keep up with it. While its permanent home is New York City’s famed 79th St. Boat Basin, the purple houseboat usually floats along the city’s waterways to various locations—its mission to spread the joys of photography to metropolitans, young and old.

The Acme-Light Slave-Master combines two units in one. First, it's a standard electronic flash unit, to be mounted on your camera; second, it's an independent slave that can be fired remotely by the flash from a primary unit. I'll just touch briefly on the unit as a standard electronic flash.

DON SUTHERLAND
Signs are things the average guy sees all the time, everywhere—so if he responds to them at all, it’s with something approaching an emphatic "eh." This is okay for the average guy, who hurries through life with "more pressing issues" obliterating his appreciation of the mundane.

BOOK REVIEW IN BRIEF

[no value]
A. D. Coleman
Roots/Rue & Bluets: A Garland for the Appalachians, by Jonathan Williams, with photographs by Nicholas Dean. New York: Grossman Publishers, 1971; 160 pp., 59 b&w photographs, $17.95 hardbound. For all its handsomeness and hefty price, this is a cheerfully lightweight book that rarely rises above its engaging charm.
