The Pentax ad, currently appearing on the inside front cover of your May issue, in our opinion, merits some discussion. Two photographs are presented as evidence of the use of non-multicoated and the new multicoated lens. Statements are made concerning the variables with conclusions drawn based upon the use of the multicoated feature.

I occasionally get a warped mount after I dry mount a photograph, using an electric iron. How can I cope with this? Harold J. Moore, Los Angeles, Calif. One answer is to cool the still-hot printplus-mount under weights, such as a heavy pile of books, using a protective sheet to cover the picture area.

Most popular concepts of what a lens is supposed to do, how the focusing mechanism works, and what the optical possibilities are, stem from historical and traditional ideas about lens construction. In the optical development labs, the situation is different.

Things you should know about depth of field & depth of focus
[no value]
[no value]

Let's get off on the right foot by reminding each other that depth of field is our focusing tolerance out in the object space, and depth of focus the lens seating tolerance relative to the camera’s film plane, in the image space. These are subjects of consuming interest for most beginners that are soon forgotten or merely taken for granted.

LES BARRY
Back in 1950, I decided that if you really wanted to be serious about photography, you had to supplement any technical knowledge about cameras with a background of plain and simple art, so that you could have some creative control over what went on within that rectangle before it became a finished photograph.

A tip for making really good family pictures— be prepared!
[no value]
[no value]
EDWARD MEYERS
The wrong kind of family pictures is often the kind most people carry around in their wallets, or display in cute gold-leaf frames on the living room coffee table. Picture the shot of the kids, dressed up in their Sunday best, hair slicked back, and lined up in size places with arms down stiff at their sides, looking as though they were made of clay, and ready to fall over at tlie sign of the slightest breeze.

Don't let anyone kid you. Large numbers of professionals who are highly creative still keep a sharp eye out for accessories, gadgets, and gizmos that do a special job, make life easier, or simply keep them from losing their minds. I’ve reported on some of these units in previous columns.

Last month I described the centennial exhibit of the San Francisco Art Institute, a four-part, four-art, four-museum show that had prestige and publicity behind it, and an entire evening set aside for the opening so the venturesome, if they dedicated themselves single-mindedly to gallery-crawling, could alight briefly at all four shows on opening night.

NORMAN C. LIPTON
The death, at 77, of Harold Lloyd, the eternally youthful, bespectacled silent-film comedian, has deprived amateur photography of one of its most dedicated and funloving fellow-practitioners. Lloyd was a stereo nut. He was also a collector of picture-taking gadgets and an experimenter with a perfectionist’s drive.

It is all too tempting to buy sound equipment, from tape recorders to components, by the numbers and assume that 100 watts beat 40, and a response from 20 to 20,000 Hz outdoes a mere 100 to 9,000—but it isn't necessarily so. Let's start with power output.

Turnabout may be fair play, but I for one find it uncomfortable to be on the wrong end of the viewfinder. The other day I was down by the lake, musing about things, when I sensed the stealthy approach of someone behind me. It turned out to be two someones; a photographer and a photographer's assistant—both young ladies.

Experienced photographers say that learning to see light is very important in mastering photography. However, they seldom tell you what seeing light means or how you learn to do it. The term actually means “seeing what light does." Merely seeing light is really no art at all; for anyone who is not blind can do it.

An old friend of mine once said about an expensive camera bag that I wanted to buy, “Norman, that’s a great bag, but it doesn't take pictures." He was right. That particular bag had so many great but frustrating “features,” that I spent more time fussing with these than in making pictures.

In California, lasers are a photo accessory

Ivan Dryer
Science, having invaded so many areas of our lives, now appears to be ready to tackle art. The wild images on these pages were made under the direction of a scientist with no formal training in photography or any other art. Dr. Elsa Garmire is a laser physicist at the California Institute of Technology, and a pioneer in the development of laser art.

We saw it at photokina. And we saw it again in Chicago at Photo Expo 71. No, I'm not speaking of being offered (as being brand new) the same piece of equipment in both places, although that happened, too. I'm referring to a growing phenomenon of the TV-space-McLuhan age.

Perhaps Photo Expo occurred too close to photokina, but developments we were all waiting for leave us still waiting. The rumored onslaught of EE focal-plane-shutter SLRs did not appear from behind the scenes or under the table. There were just a smattering of new cameras, some of which were shown at photokina.

In the movie area, Photo Expo 71 displayed a great deal of sophistication in design. Paillard Inc. unveiled its Bolex 280 Macrozoom, a super 8 movie camera combining an 8:1 zoom range with focusing right down to contact with lens. The 7-56-mm f/1.8 lens can be zoomed manually or by battery-powered motor, fast or slow.

'Hood' for a reversed lens
[no value]
[no value]
Denis J. Useo
When a lens is used in the reverse position for close-ups, flare is often a problem, as there are no hoods made to fit the rear of a lens. This can be remedied by the addition of a “hood,” nothing more than a short extension tube, long enough to serve as a shade, but short enough to avoid vignetting.

Frank Leicht
Many cable releases have very small shoulders on their barrels. A firmer grip can be had by fitting a fibre or plastic washer under the shoulder, with epoxy cement. The release can then be more easily operated by placing the barrel (below the washer) between the index and middle fingers, and depressing with the thumb.
