This guy, Leopold Reiter, really flipped when he wrote, “Flip Your Titles” (Sept.) This “flip” simply won't work. But, worse still, many of your readers will waste several feet of 8-mm film before they discover that when you turn 8-mm film end for end, you also put the emulsion side opposite to the rest of the film.

I store my color slides in plastic pages with individual pockets for each one. Could fumes from the plastic be damaging to the slides? Glenn Stokes, San Diego, Calif. That depends on the kind of plastic pages you have. Some of these sheets such as stiff, molded ones, made of polyvinyl acetate, are considered inert as far as slides are concerned.

You may have noticed how wonderfully detailed the astronauts’ pictures— both orbital and suborbital—are. One reason for such clarity is that our spacemen are photographing in an atmosphere (or absence of one) that is not contaminated with dust, haze, or clouds.

Headclamps were used by photographers one hundred years ago. because of slow film and too much subject movement. Today even with very fast film. we still make portraits of people sitting bolt upright in chairs, as though they had their heads clamped so that they couldn't move.

Dry-mounting the hand-iron way
[no value]

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
It you’re like many amateurs, you may not believe this. But dry-mounting your prints with special tissue and a home iron can be both easy and fun —instead of a drag, often accompanied by high print spoilage. The simple key to success is to start with a dry-mounting tissue that is really suitable for home iron use.

MARGERY MANN
The English scientist. William Henry Fox Talbot, announced a photographic process in 1839, the same year that the daguerreotype was described to the Academy of Sciences in Paris. The preliminary news of Daguerre’s success provoked a rash of claimants for priority in the discovery of photography, and Talbot's announcement was sent in a letter to the French astronomer. François Arago, who was sponsoring Daguerre. Arago responded that Daguerre's friends knew that he had been working on his method for 14 years, and added that Nicéphore Niépce, who had been Daguerre's partner until his death in 1833.

Like many photographers, I like to go it alone when seeking new subject matter or trying a new technique. The most I will generally tolerate on such expeditions is one sympatico photo enthusiast. With crowds of photographers around me, such as at photo shows or local camera outings, I’ve seldom produced any really satisfying pictures.

Camera/Infinity—a group show, at Lever House, New York City (July 20-August 3). Like politics, photographers' associations make strange bedfellows, and the Camera/Infinity group—whose members are avowedly "dedicated to the creation and exhibition of meaningful photography with emphasis on a serious personal approach and the individual statement" is no exception.

Should you ‘direct’ your portraits?

EDWARD MEYERS
When you shoot pictures of people, somewhere along the way you might just have to add the words “Directed by” to your role as photographer. This will probably happen (if it hasn’t already) when you shoot pictures of your family. In my experience, which may or may not be as great as yours, I have found three basic ways to shoot pictures of people.

If you think as I first did that Tahiti (outside of Papeete) looks like the fabled South Seas island paradise of movies and literature, wait until you get to Moorea and Bora Bora. Both are easy to reach from Tahiti (which is your first stop, because that's where the big intercontinental jets land), and if your visit to French Polynesia is by way of the constantly growing number of package tours that travel agents are offering, either or both will be included in your itinerary.

AL FRANCEKEVICH
Agitation can get you into trouble. Too much or too little, too often or too infrequent, too fast or too slow, and you’ll get rolls of film with streaks and mottling. Before I go into my specific recommendations for correct roll film agitation, let’s look at the whole problem theoretically.

This could have been just another picture of a cat . . . It could have been. Except for one thing. The person who took it had a very special talent. He had a real feeling for photography. He had imagination, a certain sensitivity. And it shows. He was able to turn what might have been an ordinary, trite snapshot into a truly different and memorable photograph.

Most of us are still chiefly concerned with getting truly sharp images, despite the acceptance of blurred motion, out-of-focus foregrounds, and extreme graininess as esthetic means of expression. To do so, we scan test reports on lenses, set up test charts, buy the most expensive lenses and cameras, throw out old enlarging lenses and buy more expensive ones.

As a final touch to our introduction. Professor Emanuel Goldberg, first director general of Zeiss Ikon, now retired, added. “I have no capacity to learn. I have no memory. All that I’ve done was not by relying on and using my memory, but by deduction."

To me, the word “automation" has become an overworked and often incorrectly applied term in photography. Seldom is it ever used, especially by certain ad copy writers, to specify just what has become automated, and why. Even more ridiculous is the misuse of the term “completely automatic."
