Some days the whole game of color photography gets so confusing that you can’t tell the players without a scorecard. This is especially true now in the world of color negative photography, where the brands and products are suddenly all playing the same game, but sometimes under confusing labels.

MARGERY MANN
One September evening about 40 years ago. Darling Caroline ran across the lawn to ask me to come over to see the movies her grandfather had made on their vacation. I didn’t believe her, of course. Darling Caroline was being brought up by doting grandparents, who never called her anything else, and I had learned that I shouldn’t always believe everything that she said to me.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
If you go by statistics only. Expo 69 was a huge success. It drew about 98,00 visitors, had 350 exhibitors, bigger and better attended picture shows, and according to photo dealers around town, caused a buying crush at counters. But is this the whole picture?

600 Faces by Beaton, 1928-1969, Museum of the City of New York, May 3-Sept. 7. Though ti photographic exhibit's size, per se, is not among those criteria by which a photographer's work can be judged, it is a factor which—since it can be extremely informative— should not be overlooked.

Add New York galleries: best yet

JACOB DESCHIN
“There was this man who walked into the gallery one clay with his wife. I thought he was going to pass out in the doorway, he was so overcome at the sight of all those fine prints on the walls. After he had recovered, in about a half hour he bought about $800 worth of stuff—'I'll take this, I’ll take that.....’ Only a few days ago, he came back to purchase an original Frederick H. Evans from some prints I had just received.”

Dry-mounting in a can

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
Here's a report on some of the newer print-mounting products on the photographic scene. Over in one bailiwick are a bunch of spray adhesives in pressurized cans. And if you’ve been curious about these—because you don't have a dry mounting press, or your skill with a hand iron and dry mounting tissue leaves something to be desired—you’ll be interested.

Herbert Friedman
The sound-effects man (or technician, or engineer) was generally the unsung hero of the golden days of radio. Actors spoke the lines, but the sound man created the images—everything from the squeaking doors of the mystery shows to the creaks and groans of the ship's rigging and the thundering hoofs of the horsemen of Custer’s Seventh Cavalry.

I use LP records to provide background music for my slide shows. But halfway through the disk, dust collects under the phono stylus and distorts the sound. What should I do? You can keep your records clean by using the supplied jacket. Also, clean the record with detergent and rinse thoroughly under warm running water.

Open up when you’re up close

EDWARD MEYERS
In the days before through-lens metering SLR cameras, figuring out exposure compensation for close-ups most often took twice as much time as the actual picture-taking. As soon as you put extension tubes or bellows between your camera and optics, f-stop values marked on your lens no longer tell you the truth.

I‘ve always been fond of the 36➛82mm Voigtlander-Zoomar f/2.8 lens. It’s fast enough for available light work, and focuses close enough to suit me (about 4-plus ft). I've also grown quite fond of the Kodak Instamatic Reflex camera. I use it as a stepping stone to a new photographic approach: "Think about the picture and let the camera think about how to get it."

Tahiti tomorrow: paradise lost?
[no value]

LES BARRY
The question is: Will success spoil Tahiti? Right now, things could go either way. Tahiti is discovering tourism, and vice versa, and the air is filled with all the elements of a love affair between the two. After all, it you take a scenically splendid South Pacific island, populated by handsome, friendly Polynesians, and add a 20th-century jet strip and a couple of deluxe hotels, you have the makings of a vacation “paradise.”

Considering the fact that man has been taking pictures underwater for more than 75 years, and in view of the enormous and expanding growth of both diving and photography, it is surprising how little has been written on the subject, and how very few reference books there are for either beginners or professionals.

It’s back to the big negative
[no value]

NORMAN GOLDBERG
It looks as if a lot of photography will be "square" in the years to come. Call it by its 2¼-square designation or the metric 6x6, it’s all the same. The trend towards the larger negative was obvious at Expo '69, not only by the showing of the Warner 6x6 (available in all black now) and the almost 6x6 Pentax (they call it a 6x7), but by the under-thecounter showing to a select few of two other cameras in the 6x6 field.

Do your macro shots fall flat? To add a dramatic touch, try lighting your close-ups with fiber optics. It beats doing it the hard way: balancing masked-down photo floods, slide projectors, or even high-intensity lamps. Fiber optics will spotlight your subject.

Is it really the fine, expensive camera that you swagger down the street with that is responsible for all the fine pictures you are getting? Or is it your ability as a photographer? It’s certainly true that a sophisticated camera can get you pictures in situations when a box camera would be inadequate.

WHAT WILL THE METR SYSTEM MEAN TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY?

WALLACE HANSON
There is a move afoot to inch America closer toward the metric system. As anyone knows who has owned a foreign car, a lot of wrenching changes would follow our full conversion to metric weights and measures. With the U.S. on the metric system, photographers would puzzle out ridiculously low guide numbers, and photographers' models would list astonishingly ample measurements compared to the current ones.

Broken meters can usually be fixed. But of course, you can’t wait. It's a nice day and great pictures beckon. I am a meter slave nowadays, too, since I joined the lazy automation school.

My first impression of this camera is that the owner’s operating manual put out by Mamiya is one of the finest I have ever read. It leaves nothing to the imagination and explains everything very clearly and concisely with adequate diagrams and photographs and an exceptionally fine section on trouble shooting when unanticipated difficulties arise.

LENS PERFORMANCE: Most lenses of this focal length and aperture reach their peak of performance only after stopping down about three stops. This lens peaked out at f/4, only two stops down from wide open. This impressive performance was marred slightly by some do centration which caused slight axial astigmatism.
