Reading Margery Mann’s so-called review of Pirkle Jones Black Panther show in the May 1969 issue, I can understand why Mr. Jones and his wife refused to allow their work to be reviewed by such a racist as Miss Mann. It was very obvious from her review that what she objected to was not the photographs themselves, for she describes them as being, “extremely powerful, made with sympathy and conscientiousness, and beautifully printed.”

I want to make Ektacolor prints at home. Is it true that Kodak still makes the needed color internegatives from my 35-mm color slides for 50 cents each, as stated in the Sept. '67 column? My dealer says the cost is $2.50. Is this correct? W. B. Parker.

Pas de Deux—Photographs by M. Richard Kirstel at Exposure: A Photographer’s Gallery, 214 East 10th Street, New' York City (Feb. 1-Mar. 21), was one of those infrequent exhibits which, aside from their esthetic merits, are of major significance for other, not necessarily photographic, reasons.

Shooting for the moon

DAVID B. EISENDRATH
As I write, there is much talk about astronauts landing on the moon this year, hopefully in July. Of course, the photographs they bring back will interest laymen and scientists alike. In December 1968 I wrote about “moonlighting" or making pictures by the light of the moon, or making pictures look as though they had been made by moonlight.

Childhood without tears—but is it really that way?

MARGERY MANN
The nice old lady stowed her bundles in the rack over our heads and took her place beside me on the crowded bus. One package, a small flat sack, was too precious to be deposited with the rest, and she cherished it on her lap. After a while, she took a folder from the sack and then gently opened it.

JACOB DESCHIN
The voice at the other end of the line asks meekly: “I would like to show you some pictures and get your frank criticism.” It hardly ever fails, but my reaction almost invariably is one of near-paralyzing apprehension. I am in a dilemma. Reluctant to refuse to see him, or her, ( isn’t it my job and responsibility to the medium to look at everything offered to me, and isn't there always the prospect of a new “discovery”?).

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
Before World War II, it was easy to be an all-around expert. There were far fewer important cameras, and techniques were well established along more or less traditional lines. The shoe is on the other foot today. As with everything else, an equipment, technique, and information explosion has taken place.

Cracked trays and developing tanks can be made leakproof (without using glues or epoxy cements that could contaminate processing solutions) with the application of heat. A solder gun is perfect for this, but a wellheated screwdriver tip will also serve the purpose.

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
How would you like to try a really fundamental way of coping with high contrast in black-and-white? Any advanced photographer worth his salt knows how to side-step harsh illumination, or reduce it. But he should also know how to cut contrast through exposure and processing.

Sound can’t stand alone
[no value]
[no value]
Herbert Friedman
Great amateur slides and movies are common—they are made every day of the week. Great amateur slide and movie shows, however, are almost as rare as snowballs in the Sahara, for with few exceptions a show is much more than just visual images. A real show involves sound that stirs the imagination and helps to conjure the desired images.

New, go-anywhere flash meter is easy on the pocketbook
[no value]

W. Frederic Wilson
Up to now, the average photographer who uses electronic flash has had to work out his exposure values by trial and error, using film and Hash-unit manufacturers' suggested guide numbers as a starting point for his trials. After a few errors, he has usually been able to figure out fairly good exposure values and base new exposures on his past experience.

After recuperating from a long illness, one of our readers went to check out his photo-gear that he had lovingly stowed away in a gadget bag. His “lifetime” strobe unit wouldn't flash. None of his three exposure meters worked until he gave them all a sharp rap on the heel of his hand.

Stop looking for the perfect lens. It doesn't exist. Even if one did, the image it would form would be imperfect because of the very nature of light itself. Light waves radiating out from the subject and being photographed behave much like ripples on a pond.

While others may justly boast “You press the button, we do the rest,” it remained for Agfa-Gevaert in Germany to do something about the button. They've made it bigger and better, and colored it red. Their “Sensor“ shutter firing mechanism may or may not be the greatest invention since gunpowder was made obsolete by flashbulbs, but it is certainly the most significant advancement of the art since Mr. Cable’s famous flexible release made its entry.

LENS PERFORMANCE: The first impression one gets from looking at this lens is that something dreadful has gone wrong in its assembly. The front element (as everyone knows) should have its outer surface convex (bulging out), but this one is concave (bulging inward)! One look through the lens and all doubts are removed, because this lens performs superbly.
