Zunow, it’s not so bad I was interested in your article in April (“Offbeat”) about the Zunow f/1.1 lens, as I have two Zunow f/1.1 6.5-mm lenses for 8-mm movie cameras. I bought them from some New York house about 10 years ago for around $50 and am still using mine on a Bolex, having given the other to my son.

Will fluoridation hurt? My city is now fluoridating the water supply. Will this have a practical effect on developers, or is the added amount too miniscule? A. L. Schoeni, Dallas, Texas The amount of fluoride is generally considered too small to have any noticeable effect.

DAVID B. EISENDRATH
Recently alter I finished lecturing before a professional group, one of the members came up and asked if I'd answer a question. With this, he laid down four glass-mounted filters on a sheet of white paper. "Look at these,” he said, "they are all supposed to be 80A, yet each one is different.”

The beauty and excitement of surfing
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Because of my affinity with the sea and anything connected with it, I have watched surfing grow from a specialized sport in which only a few participated to an international field of rivalry. I've been photographing surfers at our local beach and in Hawaii for many years and am aware of the sensational pictures taken by men like Dr. Don James and Bud Brown.

At last, photo museum for New York
[no value]
[no value]
JACOB DESCHIN
Decisive steps to give New York a museum it has long needed—one devoted to the technology as well as the art of photography, and including a photographic center—were taken recently by individuals who apparently mean business. As of now, discussions are underway concerning the acquisition of an existing museum, quarters to house it in New York City, and funding to fiance the purchase and insure its maintenance.

Take it away by bleaching

AL FRANCEKEVICH
Local bleaching of prints, using potassium ferricyanide, extends the possibilities of enlarging papers enormously. For me. ferricyanide has almost completely eliminated the technique of dodging a small area. Dodging may be easily detected, but skillful use of bleach cannot.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD

Of mariachis and genggongs
[no value]

Harvey V. Fondiller
Whether you're taking stills or movies, a tape recorder is the perfect handmaiden of a camera when you're traveling. A soundtrack can add much to your slide or film showing, especially if it includes music recorded on location. There arc many opportunities for taping music abroad: in Mexico, it could be a mariachi band; in Italy, street musicians; in I rinidad, a steel band.

Shadows can make the picture
[no value]

CORA WRIGHT KENNEDY
Many photographers have problems with high contrast in bright sunlight. and you're not likely to be an exception. On such a day, out of doors— perhaps on a beach—or even indoors by sunny windowlieht, shadows on people's faces can be very deep compared with important bright highlight areas.

Now it’s underground tourism

LES BARRY
Recently, I made a trip to Atlanta for a first-hand look at that city's newest tourist attraction, a relatively unheralded venture called "Underground Atlanta." which is, as its name implies, a sort of pseudosubterranean section of the city—a tour-block area, long dead and literally buried, that's been given a new lease on life.

Watch out for bargain accessories

NORMAN GOLDBERG
"For Sale: (cheap) accessories guaranteed to frustrate your photography.” Although I've never seen such a sign posted in a camera shop, there have been many times when I was tempted to scrawl one out myself and nail it to the door as a warning to the innocents who might buy some of the junk more experienced friends would spurn.

In our large, booming economy, many people buy big, impressive books to leave around the house, more as image-builders, props, or decorations than anything else. These volumes— with ample reason called “coffee-table books”—are usually filled with fine pictures and a minimum of text.

NORMAN ROTHSCHILD
We Americans are not usually vociferous or demonstrative when it comes to haggling over bargains. But we do spend time looking for "buys,” scanning the ads, and when near large urban centers, wandering from camera store to camera store. To the seasoned veteran of many a camera deal, this represents a safe journey.

A year and a half ago, when I took over the day-to-day running of the Test Lab, I was shown the Aerotronic model 805 FL exposure meter tester and three neutral density attenuators. With this rather impressive looking and expensive ($250) machine plus the three ND filters, I started testing all types of exposure meters: hand held, built on. and built into cameras.

Traveling photographers would do well to take a tip from the Boy Scouts: be prepared. In particular, be prepared for everything to go wrong. You may find on arrival that your suitcases with equipment have gone astray to some distant port, you run out of film, your meter gets an unsuspected bump and gives you misleading readings as a result, and your exposed film gets lost in transit to the processor.

YASHICA’S TL ELECTRO-X looks externally almost identical to its TLSuper, but inside there are some significant departures. For one, it incorporates a bridge-circuit exposure system, similar to that of the Zeiss Ikophot T meter. Its CdS photo-cells are coupled, in sequence, to resistors instead of a delicate meter movement.

Not too many years ago, Nikonos owners had fun wearing their camera while they fell “accidentally” into a swimming pool or walked into surf at the beach. Of course, this waterproof camera wasn't hurt in the least, but the performance was good for startled looks, frantic arm-wavings, and hoarsely yelled warning shouts.

Is there a device that seals transparencies in plastic and glass mounts? I develop my own color, so it must be able to handle strips of film, rather than single frames. Laurie Stern, Jamaica, N.Y. Vytron Co., 109 Oak St., Amityville, N.Y. 11701, offers the Dia Perfector that lets you mount either glass or glassless plastic mounts and also cuts film into frames.
