Would you please print some kind of “Dirty Old Man's Index of (the) Cheap Chccsccakery" you have published in the last few years? Considering the ruckus raised in your December Letters, you must be promulgating some pretty fantastic obscene and pornographic materials.
I have trouble focusing my single-lens reflex camera with normal or longfocus lenses, and I assume the difficulty is that I wear trifocal glasses. What do you suggest? — Carl Pedersen, Checktowaga, N.Y. You need to focus through the part of your glasses that is for distance use, since the viewfinder of most 35-mm SLRs is designed for this type of vision.

A few nights ago a friend asked me if I'd like to look at some prints he'd just made of his vacation trip to Israel. He is a businessman and a very keen amateur photographer who took up color printing (with the aid of the Kodak Drum Processor) a few years ago.
The pilot pointed downward and said. “Mule train.” He dipped the wing of the little plane, and through the window we could make out a couple of dozen moving, dark specks, spread out along the ribbon of trail that zig-zagged up the side of the canyon.
Ask most people where they might find the world's largest Leica collection and they would probably answer. “Wetzlar, of course.” But it isn't in Wetzlar, or New York, or anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere for that matter, but in Tokyo.
Using an old spring-wound 8-mm camera, film purchased with funds scrounged by the PTA, and untold hours of after-school work, the senior class had finally completed the film, "How Our School Works With The Community." As the house lights dimmed, hundreds of beaming parents, school officials, and civic leaders settled down to a low buzz . . . then silence.
Turntable and recorder specifications often include a specification for flutter and wow. What is the difference between these two terms? Flutter and wow are somew hat similar in that both are caused by speed variations in the turntable’s or recorder's drive mechanism.
Brassai had come to the United States mainly with three missions in mind: to attend the opening of his large exhibition of photographs at New York's Museum of Modern Art; to preview the exhibition of his work in sculpture, drawings, gravures, etc., at the gallery La Boetie on New York's Fifth Avenue; and to consult with his publishers, Doubleday & Co. about a forthcoming hook of unpublished photographs of Paris in the 30s.
Every so often I get a good look at the kind of work crossing the desks of our picture editors and art directors. I am astounded at the tremendous quantities of really poor work that I see, even worse than the kind submitted during an era when photography was not so technically advanced.
I'm always pleased to meet people who don't automatically ask "What’s new?" when they greet you. I met more than 50 such refreshing types at the First Conference and Workshop of the Society of Photographic Collectors of North America held last November at The Ohio State University in Columbus.

If you’re still searching for a fast, uncluttered way of displaying enlargements at home, you might consider going the magnetic way in one fashion or another. Quite a few shows open to the public have used a magnetic system. The basic approach is to “metalize” a wall or display area—usually adding wallpaper or paint afterwards for looks.
One hand can control two solid state dimmers for easy light balancing

Suppose the air conditioning is working full throttle, while the heat from the No.2 photofloods is slowly raising the room temperature and your temper. The studio is now ready and your fried model is about to finish drying her makeup under the lights.
Anybody who is accustomed to photographing single subjects will find it a pleasure and a change of pace to photograph couples. When you get two people together something happens; it is a matter of action and reaction. It is possible to work with a single subject and use a person off camera to achieve a spontaneous expression, or the photographer himself can attempt to carry on a conversation that will bring on a type of candid abandon.
Almost every photographic “defect” can become a deliberate effect, under the right conditions. When 35-mm cameras first became popular in the ’30s, the chief preoccupation among amateur photographers was fine grain. The photographic literature of that period abounds with magic formulas and techniques for achieving enlargements from these tiny negatives without grain.

Photographs by Gotthard Schuh, at New York City's IBM Gallery in September and October, was the Swiss photographer's first substantial U.S. exhibit. That's our loss. For nearly 40 years. Schuh has been one of Europe's finest photographers.
Agfa-Gevaert have recently launched a new “professional” film program to complement their well-known line of “amateur” materials. The purpose of this distinction is to differentiate between materials designed for the serious worker who does his own processing (or who uses quality custom laboratories), and the casual picturetaker who relies upon normal commercial photofinishing.
We frequently hear that photography is a language. A language is for communicating ideas. A person gets an idea in mind, then attempts through language to create its duplicate in someone else’s head. The more his idea and its intended duplicate are alike, the greater his success in communicating.
The best paying markets for most freelance photographers are those least publicized. It’s in fields overlooked or bypassed by his competitors that one can become a big frog in a relatively small—but lucrative—pool. How do you locate potential cash markets that most freelancers overlook?
Good printing separates the men from the boys. And yet it is not a difficult art, hut rather an intelligent, painstaking approach to a routine function. Anyone with a basic knowledge of photography and decent darkroom equipment who is willing to spend a few extra minutes on each print can master it.
agfapan 1000 not only fast, but designed for pictures
If there were an Olympic event for film speed with image quality, Germany would win hands down with Agfapan 1000. the speediest contender ever to leave Leverkusen. To date, our tests have been restricted to rolls of 120 which turned our Rollei SL-66 with its f/2.8 and f/4 tenses into an adventurous available-light camera.
It's ironic that one of today’s most interesting young talents came into photography because he was a rock-and-roll singer-songwriter who needed some publicity pictures. Paul Paree of Los Angeles can still remember when he was an aspiring vocalist (on contract to "obscurity records”) and asked a photographer (mostly of baby pictures) to make some publicity shots.
ALPA 10D reflects Alpa policy: steady change and improvement sans fanfare. Even a glance at the new model gives promise that something extra must be in store for the user: the top deck is cleaner looking with fewer gadgets and protuberances. Instead of a two-dial shutter for setting speeds, there is now only a single dial, click-stopped to rotate for all speeds from 1 second to 1/1.000 and B.
Many photographers spend hundreds of dollars on the latest, finest camera, the kind all the pros use; inquire left and right about the resolution figures of their lenses; and then pour all the precision and design that has gone into this gear—not to mention expenditures—down the darkroom drain.
In the pre-psychedelic age. a focusing screen was a plain frosted surface, free from obstructions, concentric lines and optical globs that would black out or distract. You could easily (and still can when plain groundglasses are available) make an esthetic judgement of the image.
What do you do when you’re fresh out of college, have a burning desire to become a photojournalist, but really don’t have any style or inclination as to what you should do or where you should go? That was the problem I faced in June, 1965, after I received my master’s degree in journalism from Boston University.
Maybe we are mixed up kids. Some of us love the sweat of art, the preciseness of perfection. Some of us carry our interest only to. “Did my pictures come out?” Together, we are devouring photographic products. Finding two groups farther apart, yet equally vital to a giant industry, would be difficult.
Don’t be fooled because the Polaroid Land Model 180 camera takes the same film packs as its fully automatic brethren, or resembles them very much. It looks most like the Polaroid Land Automatic Model 250, the top automatic model. But there are a number of significant differences that make many professionals veer towards this camera instead.
What would you do if you had only one cartridge of super 8 film anti a whole story to shoot? Perhaps you have never considered just how much can be done with one cartridge. Not in footage, but in actual scenes—for there fire two approaches to filming.
My camera club would like to buy a slide projector capable of showing slides in 2x2 and 23/4x2 3/4-inch mounts. If possible, this should have available several focal lengths of projection lens, so we can keep image size on the screen about the same without having to move the projector.
