As an aspiring amateur shutterbug I would like to tell you how much I enjoy your magazine each month. The articles are both interesting and informative. I particularly enjoyed the October issue, but felt that one based upon that old adage, “If you can’t be good, be careful,” should have been written especially for me, judging from the results of the accompanying picture.

Bob Schwalberg
One of the traps that photographers characteristically fall into when thinking about technical problems is to break the photographic process into seemingly convenient little compartments, and to consider each individually. We tend to forget that the photographic process is an almost uniquely organic system in which all of the parts are inter-related, and none are completely independent.

I have recently got back from the processor a roll of film in which there were about ten good, properly exposed pictures, but in some sections of film completely blank, solid black, was intermixed with the pictures. The processor suggested that the camera back had been opened and the film thus exposed but since it is black, this does not seem logical.

WE ASKED THE PROS

WE ASKED THE PROS—
Do you believe in cropping?
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Yes, you have to crop from time to time. I don’t believe in reaching in and cutting out a small section of a negative, but I will cut off an edge in order to tighten up the composition. I believe that the photographer’s eye accommodates itself to the shape of the viewfinder, and that he tends to compose according to that format.

Camera clubs and various similar organizations here and there use their talent and equipment to bring pleasure to those less fortunate. Work among the hospitalized is one of the better of such applications. The Volunteer Service Photographers has done an outstanding job for several years, largely among veterans.

However tedious and exhausting it may be, the business of judging our international contest each year affords a unique opportunity to take a broad look at contemporary photography. The stimulant that makes the job exciting is the search itself—the search for freshness and originality in a stream turgid with imitations.

There are very real faces and postures in this picture but I feel too much is included; the photographer didn't have enough courage to crop in or move in on his subjects: therefore I hesitate to call this a great picture. This is my favorite of your winners.

The eye and the imagination both are taken on a trip within the picture, following the small boy running with giant-sized shoes in his hands.
