Our 35-mm Section
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
I've just received my October, 1956, issue and found your new 35-mm section very interesting. But I think that Bob Schwalberg’s belief that the 35-mm camera will replace the 4×5 camera in press work is daydreaming. The Milwaukee Journal may be one exception (35-mm Goes to Press, August, 1956) but I dare you to come up with more exceptions.

Speedlight Battery Metering. Electronic-flash manufacturers have recently begun to cater to the equipment user's concern as to the condition of their powerpack batteries. The first unit to appear with a metering device was the Megalume 3, introduced at the MPDFA trade show last March by Nems-Clarke, Inc. (more about this below).

Interchangeable lenses—a problem in mounting
[no value]
[no value]
Bob Schwalberg
There was a time when users of 35-mm cameras designed to accept interchangeable lenses were perfectly content to use only those optics issued by the manufacturer of the particular camera which they happened to have. While many photographers still adhere to this policy of loyalty to the camera manufacturer and restrict their acquisitions to his optical family, a great (and we suspect growing) number of 35-mm people are happily using polyglot outfits consisting of many brands and nationalities.

The Color-Finishing Muddle
—an editorial sequel
[no value]
[no value]
BD
Our editorial, The Color-Finishing Muddle, in the September issue, stirred up a hornet's nest of irate reader protests. These took the form of long letter's denouncing either the Department of Justice, the Eastman Kodak Company for having abandoned the practice of dealing directly with the consumer in processing Kodachrome, or POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY for failing to lead a crusade against the U. S. Department of Justice.

As in our preceding contests, entries in color and in black-and-white were received from just about every country in the world, and again it was the amateurs and the near-amateurs who were winners of the lion’s share of the prizes. Condensed biographies of the top winners— five in the black-and-white division and five in the color division—are presented here.

The black-and-white section of the contest still attracts the greater number of entries (about 3 to 1) and offers more prizes—225 compared to 55 in color. The overall quality of the pictures this year was excellent but the editors had difficulty in singling out the top five winners because none, in their composite opinion, stood head and shoulders above the 50 hundred-dollar winners.

BOB SCHWALBERG
IF EVER a national event received all-out treatment from every segment of the communications industry, it was the recent political double-feature in Chicago and San Francisco. Grinding into high gear weeks before the conventions actually opened, the mass purveyors of word, voice, and image planned their grand strategy with military precision, marshaled their myrmidons, and descended on the convention sites like a conquering army, bent on total conquest.

THE happenings that make good picture material continue occurring whether or not you have your camera with you. I prefer to have a camera with me and photograph these things. The expression, the mood, the natural relationships of objects are constantly changing, and once gone will never be seen again ... unless they have been recorded at the moment by a camera.

A QUESTION that most amateur photographers and many pros ask me constantly, is “Why don’t you ever carry a camera unless you are on a job?" and my answer is “I don’t want to frighten all the people all of the time, but only part of the time.” Actually there is a very good reason for doing as I do.

ETHOL UFG
FINE GRAIN IN FIVE MINUTES
[no value]
[no value]
BOB SCHWALBERG
IF ETHOL UFG is not the finest fine-grain film developer ever concocted, there are very few formulas which yield finer grain and almost all of these involve some loss in emulsion speed. And if it isn’t the fastest developer ever offered, it still delivers ASA 2,000 on the new high-speed films with as fine grain and as little highlight-blocking as any developer we’ve ever tested, and a lot less than most.

When you are looking for a particular slide or group of slides you want to show someone, must you muddle through the collection of boxes in which the transparencies are returned until you are lucky enough to find the right one? If so, now is the time to set up a filing system, before accumulating more transparencies which will make the job more painstaking.

GIVE YOUR TRIPOD A LIFT
A simple, do-it-yourself device that permits lightning-fast elevation and ends squat and stoop in tripod adjustment
[no value]
[no value]
KENNETH B. MURRAY
PROBABLY some day you’ll want a tripod that elevates smoothly with a crank. But until then, you can add a new "lift” to your old tripod for a mere hour’s expenditure of time and a small expenditure of money, probably no more than 25 cents. This simple device (Fig. 1), which will let a short tripod do the work of a tall one and lets you raise your camera instantly without having to stoop, twist, and turn, is made up of just three parts, all of them wood: a base, a camera post, and its collar.

PAGE 59 Top award in color for 1956 goes to Richard Mitchell of Amenia, N. Y. for this simple and striking picture, made in Cowan, Tenn., which owes much of its strength to the counterpointing of dissimilar subject matter. The photograph was submitted in a 35-mm mount, but was actually made in a 3¼×4¼ Graflex C camera, equipped with an ingenious dark slide permitting four small transparencies to be made on a single sheet of the larger film, and, of course, employing the camera's normal lens (a 165-mm Cooke f/2.5) as a long-focus lens for large image size.

Ever since Cinerama exploded the concept of normal screen width (ratio, 1.33:1), various motion-picture companies and inventors have been vying to create bigger and better wide-screen processes. This race for the best technique has left most movie goers confused.

I ENVY the amateur. He has one big advantage that all the conveniences and facilities of Hollywood don’t make up for: He works on his own time. For instance, I can’t close up my camera at five o’clock because I feel tired, or the light isn’t right any more.
