Thank you very much for the excellent article in the July issue called So You Want To Be A Press Photographer, by Jack Gorman. This interesting article covers the subject very well, but there are a few points which I feel should be stressed. Having worked “on the street” as a press photographer in Chicago in the ’30s and in New York City in the early ’40s, I feel strongly on several points which I think your readers should know about.

Returning by steamship to the USA I met some nice English folks traveling to the States for the first time. I was giving my new Speed Graphic plenty of exercise all over the ship and they let it be known that a family group of themselves on the ship’s bridge would not be unwelcome.

In a majority of cases, I suppose, where there’s any relationship at all between the camera club and the photographic dealer it’s a pleasant one. Repeatedly I see club bulletins carrying appreciable amounts of local dealer advertising, and I see lines of type which say something like “This issue of the Amber Bottle paid for by Kilroy’s Kamera Korner.”

PHOTOGRAPHER BILL stahl thrives on problems. The methods he uses in solving these problems—sometimes working like Rube Goldberg, at other times like a serious electrician—give his pictures an unusual quality. To illustrate Stahl’s technique we present two of his night color pictures taken at the beach, and the story of how they were made.

THIRTY-FIVE MILLIMETER color film has opened up new horizons in color photography. A look at recent magazines and color slide competitions will show that color need not be limited to static subjects— flowers, landscapes, posed portraits, and the like. It’s also suitable for dynamic candid photography of people in unposed action.

TEXTURE is that quality in a photograph that makes you want to reach out and touch it with your fingers; it’s a powerful visual impression of qualities like roughness and smoothness, usually communicated by the sense of touch. And third dimension? Nobody needs to be told what that is in this day of Polaroid glasses and wide movie screens.

LOOK BEYOND your subject—try to see past the pretty girl, the child, the cute pet that demands all your attention when you shoot. Consider backgrounds; they can add or detract so much, even make or break your picture. Watch for mergers of tone between subject and background, which seem to swallow' up the center of interest.

THE COLOR FILTER DOES ITS JOB

JOSEPH FREDA
THE color filters used in color photography are a different breed from those used in black-and-white (monochrome) work. They have a different job to do. For this reason, the beginner in color who has never done any serious work in black-and-white is relatively lucky. His conception of filter use is completely unspoiled and he can start from scratch.

ROBERT CHRISTOPHER
I SOMETIMES think that a camera has as much magic as Aladdin’s lamp. It makes sour faces turn sweet, bowed heads look up, and weak eyes squint into the sun. With your "glass-eyed box" and a minimum of money you can go about anyplace in the world. My camera and I just made a trip around the world for only eighty dollars.

FIRST INTRODUCED by George Eastman in 1888, the roll-film box camera has become as much an American institution as baseball or central heating. Of the more than 30 million cameras in the United States, the great majority are non-adjustable “aim-and-shoot” types. It has become everybody’s camera for two good reasons: low cost and utter simplicity of operation.

Shooting pictures of houses inside and out is a highly specialized—and lucrative —type of photography. In this attractively-designed book Robert C. Although his instructions are of more interest to the pro or semi-pro with a view camera, the amateur with a roll-film camera will find helpful information in Chapter 8, Your Own Camera.

HOW TO OVERCOME HIGH SUBJECT CONTRAST
By exposing for shadow areas and processing in a diluted developer you can record a full tone range from a high contrast scene.

EXTREME contrast in a photographic subject is a problem that confronts every photographer sooner or later. Before you is a scene with very bright highlight areas and almost black shadows. How can you make a good picture, one which has detail at both ends of the tone scale? If you expose for the highlights, there will be no detail in the shadows.

ONE OF THE MANY fascinating developments that has come out of stereo-struck Hollywood this year is a new three-dimensional still camera that is bound to outlast the current 3-D movie rage. Got a real close peek at Columbia’s 4-way (2-D, 3-D, 2-D wide screen, and 3-D wide screen) camera on the Gun Fury set and can’t help but marvel at the mechanical know-how that lurks behind Hollywood’s Iron Curtain. No matter what the problem, these masterminds always come up with the answers.

HOW TO SUSTAIN MOVIE INTEREST
You'll gain in audience appeal if scenes are interrelated so that film story flows logically

ROY CREVELING
THE BIG MOMENT in a host’s life used to be the one which presented the first opportunity to bring out the family album. And apparently it still is. The only difference, now, is that the album is wound on reels, the pictures move, and the host talks louder when explaining them, to be heard above a projector.

CARLYLE F. TREVELYAN
PRIMARY job of the movie maker, after he has learned proper use of the mechanics of his camera, is to capture, build up, and maintain audience interest in his films. Regardless of the type of picture to be made, or its degree of presumed emotional, personal or intellectual interest, audience reaction is established by means of a number of factors, one of the most important being visual interest.

WHEN you write short letters and notes, why not add a unique personal touch by putting them on picture stationery which you can make in your darkroom? One of your good pictures of Junior playing cowboy or of a neighborhood scene can add “a thousand words” to each letter you mail out.

A tilt-top reflector, like the one pictured here, is a valuable aid when using bounce flash. Attached to your BC flash base, it enables you to tilt the reflector in practically any direction. Some of the new flash attachments have brackets that allow mounting in the accessory shoe of the camera; if your camera doesn’t have a built-in shoe for accessories, a small base (sold at photographic supply stores) can be attached to the camera body and the tilt-top screwed into it.—A. L. Schoeni, Falls Church, Va.

I'm afraid that this is a question which is more theoretical than practical. In the first place, no manufacturer of color film ever claims to give perfect color. Satisfactory, or pleasing, or good color—yes. These are all possible and practical, but as for duplicating all of nature’s colors at the same time, this is much too much to expect.

HOW TO TEST YOUR DARKROOM AYR SAFELIGHT

HOW’S your darkroom? Is it dark enough? Is your safelight really safe? Are you sure about that? When we make prints that are flat and lacking in sparkle, most of us blame the paper, the negative, the chemicals, and sometimes ourselves—whereas actually an unsafe darkroom or safelight may be responsible.
