I was amazed to see the color photograph on page 36 of the August POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY. Props are O. K. but why a boiled RED lobster, brought up by the diver from the sea? He must have been fishing in a Hot Spring! Let’s keep the props reasonable, and live lobsters are usually green.

Variable-Contrast Enlarger. The British photographic press brings us news of a revolutionary departure in enlarger design which has the practical effect of making almost any negative printable on normal grade printing paper. The enlarger in question is the Autoplex, an automatic-focusing instrument for miniature negatives, which is made in France by the manufacturers of the Foca 35-mm camera.

I HAPPEN to have my own small darkroom in the basement at home, and not far from it is a simple sort of home workshop. The way in which this little shop helps out in photographic activities is worth a few words because there are a number of points on camera mechanics which I’ve picked up along the way that may be useful or interesting to others.

the editor
EVERY camera owner discovers sooner or later that photography is a hobby with many facets. It has something to offer everyone in addition to the simple business of snapping the shutter. One of its most fascinating aspects is found in the darkroom, where the magic of simple photochemistry is revealed during the processing of sensitized film and papers.

CONSUMPTION of color film during the next month will reach its annual peak as countless thousands of photographers take to the woods to record the most dazzling of all nature’s wonderful seasons. As the sun’s rays cool and the sap recedes, hills and valleys will begin to glow with the fires of autumn.

NORMAN C. LIPTON
MONOCHROME prints from your color slides! Detailed enlargements from movie frames! These are the new, exciting possibilities of a simple printing process that has recently appeared on the American photographic market. For many years, color slide fans have vainly hoped for a quick direct-positive material that would enable them to make inexpensive prints from their prized one-of-a-kind transparencies.

SKETCH IN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS
If your pictures lack sparkle here’s an easy way to pep them up. By adding retouching to acetate sheets, you can improve even 35-mm negatives

DON. D. NIBBELINK
MANY AMATEURS are plagued with prints which don’t show quite enough sparkle, or have essential highlights missing. This is not always the fault of the photographer, since there are times when the lighting for a particular picture, especially an outdoor shot, is not adequate to catch all the highlights in a subject.

Philippe Halsman, perfectionist extraordinary, shuffles a deck of 4x5 film sheets with the dexterity of a card sharp. In complete darkness, he stacks 12 or 14 sheets of film on top of each other, then spreads them out in a fan like a hand of cards. After counting them, he places them one by one in the developing tray. With one forefinger at the side of the pack to keep them square, he then shuffles the films in the developer with his other hand, continuously removing the bottom sheet and putting it on top.

With the help of a dim green safelight, Fritz Henle develops fast panchromatic roll film—by inspection! This ancient, but far from obsolete, method of development has a great advantage over time-temperature processing: it allows near-perfect control because the photographer actually can see his negative build up to desired density.

Developing techniques used in the clean white darkrooms at Look magazine can be summed up in one word—stand-ardization. DON’T think for a moment that I’m an enthusiastic small-camera addict just because I’m a movie director with glamorous stars as picture subjects! Even though I have been able to shoot candids of famous faces in repose while directing films like “Annie Get Your Gun” or “Showboat,” I know for sure that the stimulation I get from my own photography comes directly from the medium in which I can express my personal taste—and not primarily from the subjects I shoot.

Match this one Earl Leaf tells: A few years ago he shot a story for Eye magazine on the French Riviera, which they rejected, paid expenses for and returned to him. Earl promptly sold it to This Week for nearly twice as much, and a few months later sold the second rights to Night and Day.

LOUIS HOCHMAN
ONE of the best ways to revitalize a jaded imagination that is losing its power to conjure up new and novel home movie title ideas, is to browse through a few department stores and study the variety of toys on hand. When viewed from a cinematic point of view, you will be surprised at how many of these playthings can fit into the title-making picture.

SOLD—One Brooklyn Bridge

An oft-repeated tale came true in New York recently when Claude Molveau sold the Brooklyn Bridge for $300. But don’t call the cops— this deal was strictly on the square. For best results, film should be dried in the manner prescribed by the manu. However, there are emergencies when a photographer has to dry film in an extreme hurry. For these times, a blower type of electric heater is a great aid, but unfortunately these blower types sometimes force dust onto the film.
