PHOTOGRAPHICALLY speaking, the Japanese lost considerable face in Hankow, China, Dec. 16, 1944. Three Japanese with cameras dashed busily about making propaganda pictures from all angles of the torture parade of three American fliers, but none of their pictures was usable.

THE F.B.I. had a man right behind HAL RHODENBAUGH for two weeks straight. Hal had a clear conscience, however; the sleuth was there to check up on Hal’s subject, not Hal. He was working on an F.B.I. story and this highly specialized agent traveled with the camera party to make sure the F.B.I. subjects were pretty enough for the pictures.

Those Salons Again!
[no value]
[no value]

[no value]
I like nothing better than a good argument, but I cannot abide one where my opponents are lacking in skill. Salon photography must have better apologists than the team in the May issue. When I say that salon exhibitors, by the very reason of the fact that they are salon exhibitors, should be disqualified from sitting in judgment on the work of other photographers, and Mr. Peabody likens my contention to that of saying “that no left-handed man is fit to be a baseball player,” I feel like I am on a platform with a phonograph.

DID YOU KNOW you can make movies with your still camera? Getting a cinematic effect by taking a whole series of pictures of action in rapid succession is a good way to improve anyone’s picture-making abilities. It is also a lot of fun, as Brad Smith found out when he made the series shown on pages 40 and 41.

Alfred Eisenstaedt IN TOKYO
Life's charter staff photographer finds that ability at pantomime (plus American cigarettes) helps him get the pictures he wants in Japan, but he still yearns to get back to his favorite photographic subject—America
[no value]
[no value]
Irving R. Lorwin
ALFRED EISENSTAEDT’S first picture story in Tokyo was on a Japanese play at the Imperial theater. His interpreter made arrangements in the morning for Eisenstaedt to shoot his story after the matinee. That afternoon the interpreter got sick and Eisenstaed, who doesn’t speak a word of Japanese, took pictures that evening of a troupe of Japanese actors, none of whom spoke a word of English.

Charles T. Pearson
IF YOU SEE a magazine cover or illustration with a line “Photo by Joe Clark,” you probably will note a simplicity and common appeal that over a few years has brought this hillbilly from Tennessee into the top rank of photographers, with a success story that is as unusual as the beginning was accidental.

"TAKE A LOOK at these pictures of my kid at camp.” Those are fighting words for most photographers. Say “yes” and you’re in for a session with dozens of pictures of the same child standing self-consciously in front of what his parent says is “the most beautiful place you ever saw.”

LAST year when Tony Venti got married, his lovely young bride, Betsy, didn’t know which end of the camera you look through. At the wedding, the guests talked photography when they weren’t making pictures. If it’s that much fun, Betsy decided, she had better stop kibitzing and take a hand in the game herself.

Dr. WALTER CLARK
PHOTOGRAPHY is fairly easy for most of us. We expose with confidence that the camera and film will work, and take it for granted that developing and printing will be satisfactory. We are fortunate, for we do most of our photography in the temperate environment in which it was invented and grew up.

Remember an item we ran here a while back, concerning efforts of the Albany (N. Y.) Camera Club to raise funds and gather equipment for Sgt. Bill Schwartz? The sergeant, you may recall, had lost both legs in France, had become interested in photography while recuperating in an Army hospital, and had decided on photography as a vocation.

A slight alteration in the box in which your darkroom scale was packed will provide an ever-ready storage box for the scale. Slit the two front corners of the bottom half of the box from top to bottom (as shown in the illustration). This will allow you to use the scale in its original container, will keep it clean, and makes it available without having to lift the scales by a part of its delicate mechanism.

IF a photographer were engaged in taking a picture of another photographer in action, I am sure he would devote some attention to getting everything correct as to technical details. There has been ample evidence that when he photographs other activities calling for equal attention to detail, the results are not always correct to the eyes of someone who knows those activities.

This pictorial year book of hot music contains a wealth of fine photographs. (Some of them are reproduced in a story on the book which appears on pages 54 and 55 of this issue of POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY.) Jazz—from a small New Orleans country dance to Carnegie Hall—is presented in interesting text and excellent pictures.

What's Wrong with this Picture?

[no value]
CHARLES YERKOW
A "floater” insurance policy on your camera and equipment is a wonderful thing, and the photographer shown here would do well to have such insurance. Can you locate the small item that’s likely to cost him money? Well, it's all in the closeness of those tripod legs, since they are supposed to be spread well apart and thus insure firmness and safety.
